And Logan. Not in the same league as Land of Mine, but by far the best (or second best if you count Deadpool) X-Men movie. A whole lot more depth than any of the previous X-Men movies.

    Home NAS

Just an observation. I was using an Athlon X2 260 on an Asrock MATX 780 something board and this setup would lose a disk connected to a highpoint controller weekly. Occasional errors fixed by a resilver as well. I changed the board over to a P67 + i5 2400 and there has only been one dropout...

    HFS+ data recovery

I ended up buying Easeus Data Recovery Wizard for AUS$130. The free version only allows 2GB to be recovered. I tried TestDisk, but it couldn't read the disk. I also tried a GParted plugin (I forgot the name) but whilst it could read the disk, it didn't find any files. So I ponied up.

    HFS+ data recovery

Hi all, I'm trying to recover a Mac external drive HFS+ that was plugged into a Windows 7 computer, and now just shows up on a Mac as a New Volume. What tools should I look at that might be able to recover the data? Mac based, Linux based or Windows. Free is best, but paid if necessary? On a...

    Home NAS

I was researching the idea of buying all the same drive recently (zfs) and the consensus was that this a bad idea as: * Recent failure analysis seems to point to localised failures in HDD - i.e. some drives in a particular batch may be more error prone that the failure rates in a drive family...

    question Current Best Value

And now we are getting into the whole upgrade conundrum. My main rig is an i7 2600K with a mild (4.0 GHz) overclock. I have no reason to upgrade it. An 1150 pin system might use a little less power, but not a whole lot. And it won't be a whole lot faster. Getting on towards three years old.

    question Current Best Value

Just dropped an FX-8320 into a system containing an Athlon X4 635 (150 GB Velociraptor as the boot drive, 8 GB DDR-3 1600 and Vista SP2). The FX-8320 was a noticeable improvement. Not like Whooh!, but noticeable. If you have an AM3+ motherboard then not a bad boost.

    question Current Best Value

I've been playing with some old systems - Athlon X2 and X4's, Core 2 Duo's and Quads on XP, Vista SP2, 7 and 8/10 lately and my entirely subjective opinion is that the days of dual cores being adequate are approaching the end. I'd guess for the sheer number of processes being spawned in later...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Shouldn't a decent GPU even take that bottleneck away? In my HTPC I've got a Radeon 5670 and C2D e8400 and it rarely gets over 10% cpu. Mostly 720p though.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Apologies if this has been posted. I was wondering about the sense in putting an SSD in my sons Q9550/Asus P5Q Turbo - seeing as it's only SATA II equipped. It does make a noticeable improvement. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-upgrade-sata-3gbps,3469.html

People downsizing, want small form factor printer/scanner

Thanks for the tips guys. I will have to see if they want to split the functions. It may be an option if the space matters. We have already had the "yes it can be done, but there are going to be different compromises" talk.

    SSHD - hybrid drives

Startup or hibernate is one of the use cases I'm trying to speed up. The PC's in question have an abundance of printer/camera/OCR/image apps that are in the startup folder, which means reboots are a chore. I tend to create a D:\Users directory and do the same with an SSD+HDD combo, but looking...

    SSHD - hybrid drives

Has anybody used, or any experience with SSHD? I need to update a couple of computers and moving to a SSD + hard drive might be a little bit of a chore. But I also need capacity, so a single hybrid drive might be easier. This will be paired with an update to Windows 8.1.

Windows 8 on early Pentium 4?

I went through all of this when Windows 8 Consumer Preview (I think) came out-could have been the developer preview. You can actually get the Consumer Preview to run on a chip without NX bit support, but the .NET framework falls over, and you'd be surprised how much .NET code there is in a...

    low-end laser printers these days?

Anything happened in the last year in this space? I'm looking for a colour MFC for home use. Maybe 1 500 pages per year. The things that concern me most are consumable costs (laser) and graphics/picture quality. Budget AU$500 to $600. What I want are automatic duplex printing, and duplex...

    question Good SATA card?

My reading says that the RoT is 1GB RAM per 1TB of storage for a moderately used pool. If there are few users, then you can get by with half the RoT RAM. If it's a write heavy environment with lots of users, you will need more RAM per TB of storage.

    question Good SATA card?

Thanks Coug. Handy, I didn't mean to disparage your post. The fault would be mine for not making myself clear. And just a thought, would zfs be an alternative to RAID? Especially if I'm only going to create some pools on a FreeNAS box and serve them up to a couple of VM's?

    question Good SATA card?

Not so fast... :) Can anyone recommend a 4 or 8 port (it seems there is not much difference in price) SATA or SAS card that can do hardware RAID 10 (not soft RAID or Hardware assisted)? PCI-e x1 or x4 preferred, but will settle for x8. Compatible with ESXi 5/5.1 as well.

Removed one of the PCI-e NICs, and the machine boots fine with an old promise IDE card. Only two NICs, but I can live with that. Thanks Chewie for the refresher that enabled this to be tracked down. The only bad thing is, now I don't have an excuse to buy more hardware...

    question Good SATA card?

I second what Merc said Chewy. It might be the two extra NICs, plus the addon IDE card in the machine that's causing me the grief. I'll play around a little more.

    question Good SATA card?

Further research leads me to believe that: Software RAID (as on most motherboards) is done in a device driver loaded immediately post boot. Almost by definition, in the PC world, that would have to be in the first 640K of memory. The same goes for bootable add-in cards that load their own...
  45. LiamC

    question Good SATA card?

I need RAID 10. Whether the add-in card needs to support it or not I'm not too sure. The issue with using the the current IDE and SATA card is that when the on-board RAID is used, XP complains about not enough memory, or just stays at a black screen with blinking cursor. As soon as you remove...
