The Samsung drives and Hitachi drives match my experiences pretty well. The 2514N is a gem of a drive. Lately I've been buying kind of pokey Seagate 250GB units, but mostly because my local distributor is within $1 of Newegg's prices and the fact that Seagate is offering free copies of TrueImage with their drives.

SAMSUNG HD161HJ
I got one of these for a client. Couldn't find it on the web. There's a HD160HJ but I suppose that is a different model.
Testing this machine right now, it seems better in multitasking than my personal 250Gb Seagate 7200.10 SATA.

It's a shame that the Samsung drives reviewed are "old generation" models. Well, in the end the reviewer promises to "examine modern products from the surviving manufacturers"...

After the P120 series came T133, then T166, S166, and the current new-generation drives are either S250 or F334 series. I think there is a T133 series 250 GB drive, though that wasn't sold very widely thanks to the P120 model, which had the same capacity. Most vendors here sold just the 300 & 400 GB versions of the T133-series.

I hope that the upcoming review would include a single platter HD250HJ (S250, 8 MiB) or HD251HJ/HD252HJ (F334, 8/16 MiB). Our distributors have at least the S250 250 GB models in stock, the only F-series (or some call them F1-series) drives seen are the 750 GB and the 1 TB drives (though the 1 TB model is still listed as "coming"). Most likely the smaller F-series models (<500 GB) will not be sold very widely because the existing T133/T166 lineup covers those capacities.

Cheers,

Jan

PS. Paugie, the drive you have belongs to the S166 series.

250GB units are presently the mainstream desktop drive of choice. Sure, we were tired of them in 2003, but they're only just replacing the 160GB models we were tired of in 2001. ;)

Hey, a satellite location recently installed the "new" Dell Vostoc workstation computers with 160Gb drives. :) That is huge compared to the OS and applications. By law all the data must be saved on the network.

Right about the small savings between 80Gb and 160Gb.
Here, one can buy a 80Gb Seagate for 2,450 pesos and a 160Gb for 2,750 pesos. At P46/USD, that's less than $10 difference.
Yet, when I build a system for first-time owners, it's a waste to get them a 160Gb drive. I've known people who can't even fill up a 40gb drive and they've had the PC for close to 3 years.
