I don't think that this means much for the desktop. Performance wise, how far up in the server load scale would you have to go for this to be really meaningful?
You would only get a speed improvement if your drive is more than 80% full of its total space. This probably has more benefit to the manufacturers as they would not have to over spec the drive space as much to combat write amplification.
