In a shocking twist of events the ATI 5570 actually just worked out of the box. I installed Windows 7, loaded the drivers for the hardware, and got HDMI bitstreaming to work. No EDID issues and the video levels are right too. I've never had such a positive experience with an ATI produce before.

I also found out that my Pioneer Elite SC-05 can't apply DPIIx on top of DTS-MA HD audio. :(

Trying for 7.1 from a 5.1 source?

Better buy some Lotto tickets, your luck can't hold out much longer :)

I've got 7 speakers. I might as well use them. Oddly enough the receiver can apply PL IIx on top of Dolby TrueHD and 5.1 LPCM audio (and of course DD5.1, DTS5.1, etc). But, apparently applying PL IIx on top of DTS-HD MA is a no-no.

Maybe... Who knows... I'm pleasantly surprised. Now to see if people have figured out how to enable the Remote Desktop Server in Win 7 Home Premium.

Looks like they have. link
Well, it works. :salut:

I'm able to Remote Desktop into my HTPC running Windows 7 Home Premium now.

That's still a teensy bit lame without sound though, isn't it?

At this point I kind of wish I could have a 1080p tablet to be a remote control for my HTPC. Maybe that new AMD IGP will get us there.

That would be very cool, but what I'm thinking about is a next-gen MS Surface as a coffee table/remote control.

Have you looked at how much Microsoft charges for MS Surface? Last time I heard it was over $12,500 for the commercial model or $15,000 for the developer. A mighty expensive coffee table.

Yup. Which is why I don't have one. ;)

There are many homebrew projects out there that do the basics well, just waiting for something cheaper/easier to come along.

I agree that the 5770 is the current cost effective optimum especially at $140.

It is my understanding from the rumor mill that AMD will be releasing the next generation of cards in Oct/Nov time frame. The 6770 in Oct. and a 6870 in Nov. I saw some preliminary numbers for the 6870 claiming that its single GPU would be faster than the dual GPU's in a 5970. It the time frame is correct it won't be long before there will be lots of reviews giving real numbers.

If that turns out to be authentic then we are looking at the 6770 slotting in at a performance level close to that of the 5870 (moved to a 256bit bus from the 128bit 5770, bunch more of everything). And the 5850/5870 replacements must be really something.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I bought my brother in law his 5770 for about $160 and they are still in the $140-$150 range....

That being said, my 9600GT still runs Dirt2 just fine at 1650x1050...

The funny thing about that price is that the 5770 actually ran up to about $250 in around December. ATI couldn't make the stupid things fast enough.

If this turns out to be real like you've expressed, then I might be looking at getting something to replace my 8800GT! I would like a bit more speed for some of the newer games I've been playing and the 8800GT is showing it's age when running things at 1920x1200.

What is relatively inexpensive, but uses the least power possible for the 2D use only?

The best possible power consumption in 2D may actually be something with the smallest die size, perhaps the base model of the new ATI 6xxx series?

6850/6870 cards should be available at or shortly after launch. The higher end 6950/6970 is due in November, with the dual GPU 6990 in December.

I just picked it randomly for the single-slot width (a rarity nowadays) and lack of fan. There is a 512GB version as well.

The 5000 series support UVD 2 functionality. What is the Nikon format? If it's AVC it should be OK.

They'll be fine for what you want, and HIS is a big enough manufacturer (just don't plan to get drivers from their website, but that's hardly unusual).

The only question to ask yourself is: what ports do I want on the card?

The most common configuration in low end cards is what you just linked: 1x VGA + 1x DVI + 1x HDMI. Do you want DisplayPort capability and/or a second DVI port?

DisplayPort (necessary for a third monitor) starts to be an option on selected 5570 and 5670 cards, eg Xfx and Sapphire.

The Sapphire Ultimate passively-cooled 5670 is a standout solution.

Are there any RAW converters that offload to GPU? Haven't kept up to date on such things. If so, that could be a reason to go higher up the grunt scale.

You need to have a good airflow inside your enclosure for the passive Radeon HD 5670. Inside a case with poor ventilation, it will cram. It is not a good card for most HTPC because of this. Unless your HTPC case is something like the Silverstone GD05.

The passively-cooled Radeon HD 5450 can also fry with no airflow. But it only needs a minimal amount.

According to the reviews I checked before posting that recommendation, the cooling is exceptionally good for a passive solution. Even Furmark - IMO an unreasonable GPU test - didn't get it above 74C.

I acknowledge what you're saying, but in this case it looks like you're wrong.

In any case, Lunar doesn't care about 3D operation.

I can download the Furmark and test the 5450 card, but is there a risk of damage? Does the card have internal temperature control to reduce power if it overheats?

If you are running the Catalyst Control Center then you can monitor the GPU temp in it (ATI Overdrive). No need to change any settings.
