I'm working on it. Unfortunatly, the client we are using (CyberCafe Pro) seems to be interrupting all background tasks while it is active (all the time).

I'm still looking into it as anything set to run as a service should continue to do so.

In some instances, when running the GUI version, the icon dissapears from the taskbar but the task still occupies 100% of the CPU. In others the task is still running but not "crunching" at all...

I'm working on it, but am pretty busy these days.

Well, I'm in the top half of producers...

I can't wait until our new management software is ready. Right now I'm only running 3 machines, we'll have another 19 once the software is ready.

V5 beta client available, clients will expire August 30.

Check here: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/beta/beta.html

Here's a copy/paste of the changelog:

Changes in F@H Client v. 5.00
--------------------------------------

- Collection server support. If a client finishes a work unit from
a Work server with this feature enabled, then if 2 upload
attempts to that server fail, the client will return to the
work unit to a Collection server. Pending credit will be given
for the unit, becoming final when the Work server comes back up
and verifies what the Collection server has received. All work
servers will eventually be associated with a Collection server,
and many already are.
- Configuration option to allow downloads and uploads greater
than 5 MB in size, which some new projects will require due
to the size of what they are simulating.
- G@H configuration option reworded to be "No deadline" option.
- Print executable name and launch directory to log.
- Fix for bug where queue slot could get stuck "Fetching"
- MyFolding links updated.

Linux specific:
- OpenBSD support: If give flag -openBSD, client will automatically make
elf2olf system call on downloaded Cores.

Windows specific:
- Configuration option to pause work when the computer is using
battery power (for laptops).
- Behavior in response to a shutdown or logoff of the system should be
improved (exiting nicely).
- Console: Built in service installation support through Configuration, to
have the program automatically begin at machine startup. If one wishes, the
service can be further configured and interacted with through the Services
tool (GUI) that can be accessed through the Windows Settings (under
Administrative Tools in 2000/NT). The Sc command line tool may also be used.
There are known issues with the Net tool.
- GUI: Larger window size and more informative display.
- GUI: Screensaver configuration option.
- GUI: Print a message to FAHlog.txt when ask to network

Mark, Fushigi, what systems do you use for folding at this moment?
1 Athlon XP Barton 2600, XPPro
1 Athlon XP 1700 @ 2800, 2KPro
1 Pentium 4M 1.6GHz (Dell C840 laptop), XPPro
1 Pentium M 2GHz (Dell D800 laptop), XPPro
1 Pentium III 500 (Dell C600 laptop), XPPro
10 CPUs: Various Dell PowerEdge 1650s (1GHz P3) & 2650s (2-2.8GHz Xeon depending on when it was purchased), W2KServer
1 Pentium 2 333MHz, NT4

My new laptop, the D800, essentially replaced another C600. I've still got that one but haven't set it up at home to continue in the effort as I might sell it. (Work gave it to me)

None of the machines are actually dedicated, but most are up 24x7. It's too bad there's no PowerPC Unix version (either Linux or AIX); if there was I could run it on the 400s at work. The code is basically already written for the PPC Mac; it would just need a PPC Unix port. AIX preferably as AIX binary support is built in to OS/400.

Over the coming months I hope to replace the P2 333 with 3-5 2GHz Xeons. After all, I've got to try and catch up to Mark & break into the top 500.

I have folding:

One HT 3200 P4 (two clients)
One dual Athlon MP 1900+ (two clients)
Three Athlon XP Barton's 2500+@2500 XP's
Two Athlon XP Barton 2500+@3200 XP's

None are dedicated to folding but all are normally up 24x7

why 1/2 time? if set to idle priority then they don't impact the user even at full time.

It's a thermal management issue. Those 20 machines are in a cement building with no air conditioning. The only way to keep the room cool is to mount giant fans in the windows and leave the door open to the street. We can't do that while no one is there. Any time the systems are on, they are working, we're open 12 hours a day.

The WU's are too irregular for one to make judgements based on daily production. I think weekly numbers are much more accurate and you've only been at this with the new machines for a couple of days. So, I really don't know (implied -> You shouldn't either) what your average production will be under your new configuration.

Regardless of your production -- If you can rummage around and get more then why not?

PS. The goal should not be to beat Fushigi's production but to beat mine. Mind you our production is currently very close to each others: I just had a head start, so I have a higher score. If he goes ahead with his plans to add five more machines then he should easily beat my production by a good 50%. With that in mind, you may need to do even more rummaging.

Yup, agreed on all counts. When I posted that, I only looked at the "daily production" (not even the "daily average") numbers, and you were quite a bit behind...

Considering that the majority of my machines are only working from 12PM PST until 12AM PST, I really need to look at longer-term averages anyway. We'll see.

Nope, I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel WRT more hardware, nothing else over 1Ghz...

I guess I'll just have to open a few more game centers...

If you compare Fushigi's setup and mine

Then compare Processing power looking just at High performance CPU's
Fushigi has 6 major CPU's (2800, 2800, 2800, 2600 2000M (roughly equiv to a 3200), 1600M (Equiv to 2600)) and 10 minor machines I have 8 major CPU's (3200, 3200, 3200, 2500, 2500, 2500, 1900, 1900). His 10 minors are roughly equivilent to two major CPU's. I still actually out produce him on the order of about 5%.

My conclusion is that while there will be some I would not to expect alot of production increase from your minors. When I upgraded my Network and replaced all my minor CPU's with majors, I considered running my minors as exclusive folders. I thought about it and concluded that it just wasn't worth the electricity bill to run them continiously, so I simply permanently retired them all. It really costs (electricity wise) almost as much to run a minor as a major and the production just wasn't high enough to justify it: At least in my mind.

at one time, I actually considered opening a PC gaming center in my city. Ater doing a cost/benefit analysis, I decided that it wasn't going to be a profitable enough venture and that dedicated standard video games could out-compete PC's because people are easily willing to plump down 50 cents for a couple of minutes on one of those but $5.00 per hour on a PC was a hard sell.

Was I wrong?

I guess it depends on the cost of living in your area, and the mean household income. Here kids drop $7/hr to play with their friends, even if they already have the game at home. I'm looking at opening several more, and am using household income as a primary factor for choosing locations.

We aren't getting rich by any means, but it is certainly profitable and fun.

If you are interested in a franchise, we'll be starting those in about a year.
