Ivy Bridge-EX specifications, prices, launch date, etc

CPU World has posted bits of informations regarding the next generation highest-end x86 server processor from Intel : the Ivy Bridge-EX. However, the only place I can find information regarding the frequency and cache amount is, strangely, on wikipedia. Of course, being on wikipedia, we can trust these to be absolutely accurate :roll:.

What I find interesting, if true, is the fact that Intel can cramp 15 cores at 2.8GHz into the same thermal envelop as the 12 cores operating at 2.7GHz inside the Xeon E5-2697 v2. Same socket too (LGA 2011, which isn't a socket, but you know what I mean).

I've not found any precise information regarding the launch date except that they'll go out during the first quarter of 2014. Nothing on the price either, but if the Ivy Bridge-EP serves as a reference, expect a 25%-30% boost on the price of the highest-end model compared to what the current top dog cost.

According to a merchant spreedsheet I've found on the Net, the upcoming E7-4890v2 will cost approximately 7400$. That's quite a jump from the 4400$ Intel asks for the current top dog of the E7 family : the Xeon E7-4870. Since it will operate at a 400MHz higher frequency and have 15 cores instead of 10, I guess it was to be expected.

Oh my that is a lot of scratch for a CPU. Intel has always pushed the cost envelope on the extreme top-end CPU's especially with Xeons.

I revisited the numbers and I think I was a bit off. When I compare the prices on the list I've found with Intel's MSRP, the MSRP are 89.17% of the list'S prices. So that 7423$ should be closer to 6620$. That's still a lot of doh, but if I had to purchase a few, I'd be happy to pay 780$ less per CPU.

...which still puts a quad E7-4890v2 system at around 40000$, when you include the server price and the RAM (and only a few disks).

Just to check how far I am from the real MSRP when the chips will launch, I'll post what I think will be the selling prices in 1000 quantity of the upcoming E7 v2 :

IBM launched their new System X6 servers, which use Xeon E7. So I expect the new Xeon E7-v2 to be officially released in the upcoming week or so. Otherwise, why would IBM introduce a new generation of servers? It's true, however, that IBM's marketing department often does weird things...

So, the very first place on the entire Internet to accurately list the official MSRP from Intel for their new E7 was on StorageForum.net. 2½ months before the official launch.

I saw it. Mightily impressive. An HP DL580 G8 with 4 E7-4890v2 and 1TB of RAM should cost around 50K$ to 55K$, without the disks. A Fujitsu PrimeQuest 2800E with 8 E7-8890v2 should be approximately 100K$ (again, without the storage). That's much cheaper than a high-end RISC server.
