Not a thing. It would be fun to play with for a week or so, then I would just shut it down to avoid the colossal power bill. It would help me get on top of the F@H team pretty quick though.

How do I build one of these computers with 288GB of RAM?!!!!!

Well...

1. You purchase that motherboard.
2. You purchase 2x Intel Xeons to fit.
3. You purchase 18x DIMMs for the correct type. (That are listed in Gigabytes certified memory list).
4. Buy a EATX compatible case, and a high wattage PSU (something desgined for servers, and not some gaming PSU).
5. ????
6. Profit

It's sure to be popular with the West Coast cartel (SSDdrueding and Santilli) :

That's a VM monster machine. Only 470$, supposedly.

I raise you.

Supermicro X8OBN-F.

8x CPUs (or 80 cores if using 10core Xeon E7-8800's), up to 1TB of RAM, and a price that only the real rich can afford.

I know, I know, it's not in the same class as the Gigabyte board you listed, but still it's scary at what can be placed into a single server these days. (Not to mention blade systems).

Should I buy it part by part or wait until I have say $12,000 saved then buy all at once...
I know I need a lot of RAM because my Adobe Premier movie making software isn't cutting it at 8 GB of RAM... (I know at the current prices that the machine would cost about $22,0000... for 288 GB RAM... But now you mention 1TB of RAM and I am thinking I could use that... I need a place where the electricity is included in the rent though...

In response to my last post, Oracle recently released the X4800M2 server.

Kitted with:
8x Xeon E7-8870 CPUs (10 core @ 2.4GHz)
1TB RAM
4.8TB HDD (16 x 300GB 10K SAS)
8x GBe LAN ports.

Price: a cool $153K :bglaugh:

I certainly hope there is some form of humour in there?

Seriously, if you need that level of RAM and reliablity and if you wanted to build it yourself, I would look at Supermicro or Tyan, both of which have been in the server/workstation market for a long time. (They specialise in server/workstation kit).

Otherwise I would recommend something like a HP Z800 workstation or Lenovo D20 Thinkstation or Dell T7500 Workstation, where you get both a whole system warranty and a configuration that is known to work. (especially in large memory configurations).

I'm sure I'm going to regret asking, but how do you know RAM is holding you back in your movie making with Adobe Premiere?

What version of Adobe Premiere are you using?

Keep in mind that Windows 7 can only support 192GB of RAM. That is probably the sane maximum at this time.
I'm planning on 16 GB for my next upgrade. Even that I consider gross overkill but RAM now is stupidly cheap. I can't imagine what anyone would do with 192 GB.

Photoshop and the rest of my workflow can easily use all 24GB if I don't only keep one application open at a time. Closing them is massively time consuming.

No, I've never built a computer before but I do have some experience with electronics and I have the help of friends who can direct me if I get lost who have built their own computers... I'm working with Windows 7 but could work with anything that supports Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere... And I plan on getting one of them VR gloves to simplify all the moving of pixels I have to do... I don't know the size of the working set or what that means but I can tell you I'm animating pictures at a size of 936 KB (167 Frames in all) and when I try to give them 3D properties by selecting ctrl A the program overloads...

As for the question about RAM ...I check the task manager and the memory skyrockets and the program crashes when I try to introduce 3D imaging into Adobe Premiere... I suppose I could introduce it to several frames at a time instead of trying to make the whole movie 3D at the same time... but I prefer to have enough RAM to where I can perform that function.

Sorry, but it just looks like a very bad screensaver; Nice music track though. I prefer 997 as a screensaver, but the music isn't as good.
