So it turns out that my new favorite game, Mechwarrior Online, is massively CPU bound. The video cards I throw at it make no difference, but a little overclock is directly visible in the framerate.

Currently working on my "office" machine (990X) and now have it up to 4.6Ghz. Does anyone have tips for the 1366/X58 stuff? QPI?

You're still using that old technology? :D Maybe try a 3960X or if speed is more important that number of cores, then ivy stone bridges?

It isn't exceptionally multithreaded, so clock speed it pretty much it. Now stable @ 4.8; I don't think any of the other chips can do better on air.

I've kept an i7-2600k at 4.5GHz pretty much since I built it.
On the other hand, it only has 1x4GB RAM since that's the only way it stays stable 100% of the time at that speed. I had it up to 4.7GHz but it wasn't stable enough to leave there.

It's definitely easier to overclock on one stick of RAM, so that's something you can try.

I was thinking about that, but I really like having 24GB of RAM, and the added throughput is nice as well. 4.8Ghz might be as quick as I can go.

Just realized I forgot to disable the turbo-boost, so it is going to 5.1Ghz for single-threaded stuff. Never had a 5Ghz+ machine before...

Apparently I had the DVI cable connected to the wrong port on the back of the card and was forcing triple-SLI insead of quad. Now it draws 790W and scores an X10460.

That is some serious draw from a computer that idles at 200W.

For comparison, I did the math and I think that a full 24-bay Norco system is still drawing under 450W at 90% utilization.

Your power supply can sustain a load past its rated 750W max?

AX750 is about 88% efficient at full load (750WDC), so it'll draw around 850WAC from the wall running flat out.

Edit: Cross post with dd.
DD, are you using the reporting function of the 1200i for you consumption figures?

"Home 1" is no longer stable anywhere above 3.6Ghz.

Which 8GB DIMMs would you pair with an i7-3970X and Assassin2 motherboard for maximum overclock?

Sure. Why not? :)

One caveat to those: They're not on the HCL for Intel-branded enthusiast boards, so if you're thinking about moving to LGA2011 you need to be sure to look at that beforehand.

I was looking at the HCL for that particular board and couldn't find any of their 8GB modules in stock anywhere. Tempted to compromise to 4GB modules (16GB total).

And considering the chip has an unlocked multiplier I can just get good 1600Mhz modules and run them within spec.

Anyone have a favorite?

The new "Home1" computer got put together this evening. No overclocking until the larger watercooling system arrives later in the week. Amazing that this thing scores so low on the Win8 performance index (8.1-8.4)

Looking at the new Intel CPUs and not getting one motivated me to see how far I could overclock "Home1"

CPU @ 127x36 = 4.572Ghz
GPUs @ 1380 / 3960
RAM @ 2666Mhz

It's unbelievable that a full 1% of people taking this test have even crazier systems than you have.

I'll take a little pride that all the machines that scored higher than mine had 3x Titan X and got just a few more points. That makes mine clearly the best bang/buck! ;)
