Why the sea salt, and what oils?
I can try a cheap mix of olive oil and regular salt today.;-)

Coug, buddy, if you're reading this, you might want to avert your eyes and go find things to punch, because this is some nancy-boy crap right here.

<Coug Eye Aversion Space>

I bought a tub of Lush Ocean Salt primarily because I got dragged to a Lush outlet and was there for an hour and a half while my friend tried samples. It's an exfoliating scrub. The saleschick (with a master's in Philosophy! From DePaul! $180k well spent!) told me that one of the things she does with it is shave her bits after applying it to reduce the relative level of skin irritation from bits-shaving. I bought it because the skin on my forehead and cheeks usually dries out in the wintertime and I want to scrape it off on a regular basis. Lush Ocean Salt is basically a mix of coarse and fine salt along with vegetable oil and a bunch of fragrances. It's edible and in point of fact it actually tastes pretty good.

I had been using Shaving Oil for a while, but a particular sort that has the same general scent as all the other stuff I use. It does help my skin for sure, and I think it's good for the razor blade as well (you don't care about that as much since your blades aren't $2 apiece). The shaving oil I was using is basically a blend of six or seven different vegetable oils plus Sandalwood for fragrance.

It was silly to have both products, so I made my own. I spent maybe $10 on some little bottles of essential oils, which can be found next to the Potpourri in a Walmart. I poured a bunch of salt in a little disposable bowl with a lid, then added some olive oil until the consistency is the same as the Lush product (It's kind of a slurry rather than feeling granular). Then I put in a few drops of fragrance. I also added a little bit of Whiskey since the Lush version has some Vodka in it for some reason. And I have a bottle of Whiskey that I pretty much don't use for anything ever.

The salt dissolves in whatever you're using to apply it to your skin (a rag or scrubby thing or whatever) after a little bit of scrubbing, so you're left with an application of oil for shaving purposes unless you rinse it off. At that point, break out the shaving cream and go nuts.

I shave in the shower under very hot water. After I get done shaving, I rinse my face in the coldest water that comes out of the tap and if I remember I also apply a moisturizer as well.

My complexion is better now than it's been since I was a pre-teen. It really does help. And ladies say I smell nice and look a lot younger than my age.

Thanks for the warning. I don't follow that thread much, but since the forums have been quiet lately, I've decided to drop a eye on it this evening. I don't think I'll visit it again as there is nothing for me in here.

Again, thank you for preventing me to read disturbing stuff.

Sweet.

If it makes anyone feel any better, I put some nice girl-girl porn on my TV to enjoy while I typed that.

Thanks. Good idea. I was looking for something abrasive to cut through some oils and gels that I use on my hands. Regular handsoap hasn't been cutting it.

I wonder if mixing salt and hand soap together might work?

I like the idea of being able to use heated soap on my face, vs the now 40 degree stuff that comes out of the Edge Gel stuff.
Years ago, there was an article that said boffins had figured out how to make your drink (beer, soda) go ice cold when opened. Unfortunately the idea never took off; probably too expensive to implement.

In similar vein, I have wondered why nobody has invented a gizmo that dispenses warm shaving gel or body lotion. I do remember seeing an ad for a body gel warmer / dispenser, but it was more expensive that 18 yo single malt, so it wasn't worth it.

... a combination of various essential oils (mostly sandalwood, which is also what my soap and cologne smell like) ...
Sandalwood oil is e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e! I like that fragrance, and was using a soap made with sandalwood oil. However, the price has risen steadily, and I've switched to a common, everyman soap now.

I thought the Hawkeye name was trademarked by Pradeep and our friend from Chicago who hasn't posted in years (I forget his handle & name, but he was using monitors with super ultra high resolutions like Pradeep).

Merc, can you be a little more specific with the recipe? Type pf oil, quantities used, etc. ? I think a lot of us suffer from the shaving routine, and I'd like to make my own magic concoction as well.

When I was in Osaka, they took us to a bath house. You got rubbed down with sea salt, but it was supposed to be very good for your skin, in particular your back.

Someone did come out with a plug-in setup that you connected to a shaving cream container, and it heated the soap. It didn't get very hot, but it was better then nothing.

I wonder what one of those barber setups cost, that heat shaving cream?

My latest toy is a Chef's Choice knife sharpener. Wonder how it would work on a razor blade in a straight edge Hess EZ?

Just ran out of bath soap. I think I'll mix a bit of salt into the hand soap, and see if that works better to clean off oils, vaseline, etc.

I really can't, but it's really more like making a stew than baking a souffle. You can just kind of improvise with the basic ingredients and get something that will work.

Also: Fushigi, mubs.

Fushigi! (John). Thanks Merc, had a mental block there.

Thanks Bozo. Maybe someday I'll try the cheapest one and see how it performs.

You may also find tea tree oil beneficial.

People who are into herbal stuff bring up tea tree oil way, WAY too often for me to believe anything that's said about it. Vegetable oil as a moisturizer? Sure. As a fragrance? OK. Rub it on your skin to cure skin cancer? Treat diabetic neuropathy? Eliminate Psoriasis? Maybe not so much.

One thing I have noticed is using an extra sharp blade, like a feather, makes your skin thinner. You are scraping off the top layer, every day, and this makes it much easier to cut yourself. It also helps reduce wrinkles;0

That strikes me as a less than reasonable reaction. Although the word vegetable has been arbitrarily applied it usually refers to plants that you eat. DO NOT EAT TEA TREE OIL. Penicilin, otherwise known as a product of fungal metabolism, does significant good even if it can't cure cancer. Dont throw the baby out with the bath water.

Hey man...we're talking about Mercutio here. If he doesn't like or believe in something he will throw the entire house out with the bath water. :)

Mixed salt into liquid hand soap. So far so good. It seems to pump it's way through so far. It also seems to clean a bit better.

Herbal remedies can claim any number of useful functions that are seldom borne out by clinical study. The herbalists counter-claim is invariably that clinical research involved some kind of improper application, but those are the same sort of mobile goal posts used in cryptozoology and "creation science."

I hold this opinion as well, but my thoughts on it are that if they say it cures cancer, it might be good for indigestion. Even ionized water has a decent scientific argument, but not for making you live to 120.

Some studies have been done and there are still many left to do. In the mean time there is anecdotal evidence. And a great thing about inexpensive ingredients and a scientific mind is that you can try it for yourself.

Some customers tell us that they actually prefer the efficacy of our grapefruit oil product over ptt. ymmv

Don't talk to me about razor blades. Hopeless damn things. Doesn't matter what brand I use, they go blunt before I'm anywhere near finished a single shave. Also, even with my arms, it's very hard to reach the tricky spot between your shoulder blades.

First off, It looks GOOD on you;-)

Plus, if I was a 10th as strong and agile, I'd not need to worry about shaving.

Ever considered strength exhibitions?

You and a friendly gorilla would make us humans look like the truly underdeveloped wimps we are.

Have you ever thought of surfing? with your feet, arm length and weight ratio, you'd make Kelly Slater look like well, a human in comparison.

Only thing I would say is steer well clear of Tava. Shes the ride in my avatar. Something about 11,000 pounds, and skin an inch or more thick that makes her a handful.

We went to Marineworld this summer.

Orcas are also no joke. 9 tons, airborne, and a will of their own, and smarter then we are.

Along with that, we saw Tava's baby sister. She's only 9000 pounds.

Mama asian elephant did her thing, and is over 11,000. Tug of war, against 70 people, took about 3 steps, and 2 seconds.

Most exciting moment came with the new tigers. a Beauty, siberian, after swimming, decided that she was NOT going back into the cages.
Her keeper got the idea. After the show, she sat down, in pounce position, put her ears back, and snarled. The trainer, without a .458 winmag, just froze four about 3 minutes.
Funny, somehow a 600 pound Siberian tiger, with giant claws and paws can do that to you. She got over it, had a bite to eat, and then went back stage.

It's the animals running the show, period.

I'm feeling for the elephants. 30 degree and lower temps are NOT good for African elephants. Supposed to be bad for them. Hope your dad has a heating pad for you, or vice versa.
Happy New Year.

I stumbled across Dorco this morning. I'm intrigued, but I just bought a bunch of cartridges for my razor so it will be a while before I'll feel the need to try anything different. I just paid $32 for a 16-pack of 4-blade razors and Dorco wants $25 for 24 6-blade razors, so I can see real value there.

Manny, many years ago, a traveling circus had a contest. $100.00 cash prize if you could stay in a boxing ring for 1 minute with an Orangutan. After consuming a 6 pack of courage (or stupidity) I climbed into the ring
and lasted less than 10 seconds. The great ape picked me up and threw me across the ring, over the ropes and on to some padding that was around the ring. Damm, that ape was strong.

Someone wanted to find out how strong, and smart a gorilla is. So, they took super thick packing cardboard, wrapped and tapped a HUSKED coconut inside, and threw it in to the gorilla.

The gorilla rattled the box to his ear( yes, it was about a 600 pound silverback). He then put his thumbs through cardboard wrapping that would require a human to use a super sharp knife(read gorilla nails)
and peeled it off. He rattled the nut, hearing the juice. He stuck both thumbs in the top of the husk, and peeled it off the coconut like it was a grape.

Down to the coconut, it took three hits, and he broke the shell, drinking the liquid. He then pulled it apart, and started peeling the meat out like it was yogurt.

Combine 600 pounds of muscle, leveraged muscle connection points we can only dream of, and you end up with something that can lock hands on a tree branch, and go swinging around, at 600 pounds, if so inclined.

I don't know many animals that have "toys" that are monster truck tires. AT the SF zoo, one of the big boys twists a truck tire into a figure 8 for fun.;-0

Pound for pound? Leopard, gorilla, elephant, killer whale???
