Magnets are like lasers....fun until someone loses something ;)
That's why we didn't get anything with a several hundred pound force rating.

Although those would probably be the most entertaining. Not withstanding the extreme cost, dropping one of these on the roof of someone's car (who you don't care for) would be good for a lot of laughs.

That is awesome. I wonder if they need to take any special precautions to ship these things? Put them in a cardboard construction large enough that the field strength outside the box is reasonable? Special labeling?

Edit: Though if you are going to ruin something that expensive, you may as well go all out (1700 lbs of force) ;)

Put it on the hood and see what happens to the motor.

I suspect they ship them in a box with a lot of padding around them so they're not close enough to the edge of the box to say attach to the floor of the UPS truck and stay there permanently.

I know it has more force, but it's also thicker. 800+ lbs of force should do the job, plus it's thinner so there's less to grab a hold of to aid in removal. That's why I'd use that over something like a 3" disc that's 3" thick.

I'm not sure if a magnet like that on the hood would really affect the motor. Magnetism falls off pretty quickly with distance.

FWIW, the strongest magnet we all had to order was this 1" cube. :bomb:

When I was a little kid, I found something the size and rough shape of a shotgun shell in my dad's office. It was some kind of rare Earth magnet. I found that out because, as I was rolling it over his wooden desk, I got a wee bit too close to a steel file cabinet and the magnet made the rest of the trip by itself, pinching the crap out of my fingers in the process. I spent a whole afternoon trying to get it unstuck.

When I was a kid, these things fascinated me, but I wouldn't know what to do with one today. Especially these ultra-powerful ones. How will you play with them, SD?

That is the backbone of one of my ISPs. I had my laptop jacked in for a while and had some fun. The link is actually good for 500/300, but apparently speedtest.net becomes unreliable at these speeds.

I'm going to tell him that it takes a couple days for tracking numbers to show up in the shipping system because well, they do.

And yes I'm sure this guys a total scam, the emails from PayPal don't look anything like a legitimate PayPal and PayPal spoof replied that they are not legitimate.

Hmm, he wants a scan of the shipment receipt, and obviously I don't have one ideas? Remember the more time of his I waste the less people he's attacking.

Wow, I'm impressed. Go to their scam tracker and select auction/classifieds scam and Lagos is the only one on the map right now.
I'll have to join that forum.

I finally caught up, having listened to every episode from #1 up to the most current one, as of a few weeks ago. I was listening to them on my walks. Now I'm using a podcast downloader to grab stuff like the Savage Lovecast and APM's Marketplace and I listen to that stuff instead.

You know that new job I started back in April? Well, the president announced us today that he has decided to retire and he'll sell the company in parts starting now. I haven't finished the project I 've been hired for so I very much doubt I'll be considered an added value to the company. I've lost most of the customer base of my own company so I don't think I'll be able to make a living by restarting to be self-employed. Basicly, I have until the compny shuts down to find a new job or I'm done. It is the fourth time this happened to me during the past eleven years.

What a nice fucking day it's been!

Shit. That's horrible, Coug. I hope things work out for you.

One of the reasons I stay in the crappy job I have is that in spite of everything else, it has been stable. When I was a full time contractor I would occasionally go weeks or even months without real work. I'd get on a contract and the pay would more than offset the financial concerns, but I could not handle the stress of not knowing where my next paycheck was coming from. You guys who haven't ever been there don't know how lucky you really are.

That does suck for you, Coug. When I took my current full-time job it paid 50% of my average while consulting, but as Merc has mentioned, that piece of mind means a lot. Now I am tempted with other positions that pay better, but with my current position I know it is mine until I die or the company goes bankrupt (not likely). With a mortgage and a family on the way that means a lot, too.

Coug, sorry to hear that. Almost ALL my jobs were like that; company doing well when I joined, then in a year or two, they go bankrupt because the top management does something stupid. One job lasted all of 3 months before the company closed down. Hang in there, you'll find something. I survived. So will you.

Thanks. It's comforting to know that my employment history is comparable to someone living in India :p I'm SO eager to go to work this morning!

Aren't you jumping to conclusions here? Have you discussed this with your supervisor? Why would they automatically get rid of you when they sell the company? Especially when the task you're working on isn't finished...

Really sorry to hear, considered the new skills you've gained over the past months. Don't worry, I went through the same thing in 3 jobs in a row...

1. 3mths - left as I hadn't been paid in a month, despite promises of the owner. (Word has it the owner was investigated by the ATO (Australian Tax Office) for Tax fraud a few months later).
2. 2 yrs - company went broke due to gross mismanagement. Then found out all retirement benefits hadn't been paid in 18 mths, and ASIC (Australian Security and Investment Commission) and ATO were investigating for possible fraud due to bankruptcy claims. - I got 1 week notice!
2. 2 yrs - company disintegrated due to divorce between the owners...
3. 5 yrs - company while still doing ok, but was on thin ice due to market pressures due to competitors in the vertical market. (Left to go to Uni).
