Heh!!!

The lights came with the fan controller, and, I did NOT know they were there.

That said, what I like about that case, is the front bling bling, in the lights, and, the near full case size, giving extra drive bays, and, it's quiet, and it's quiet, and, it's quiet.

David's Novell expert is a VERY nice dog.

I was going to use this at work, but, after much badgering, they gave me a computer that actually works, other then no front usb ports working, and no CD working...plus, they gave me admin status, which means I'll be able to REALLY screw up their network. :mrgrn:

The drive with all the stuff on it is going back to seagate, with a busted power pin, or, in the used bin, or, in a server box we need to talk about.

So, the magic question is, should I use the dual Xeon 2.8 or the 3200+ AMD for a gaming machine? Right now, both machines will have X 800 XL
video cards, the AMD with 128 mb of vram, and the Xeon with 256 mb of vram. Can't switch them, either. AGP vs. Express etc.

Currently have Alcohol 120 on the Xeon machine, and raid 0, so I hope the Xeon is the way to go, but, in the future, the Athlon looks like it will be
far faster...

What's the fastest Xeon you can use in an X5DA8, currently?

Yeah, it was! I hope the audio wasn't dubbed in after the scanner was made to make matching movements.

Back in the early '80s when I got started in the IT industry, one story older co-workers told me was this: the data center housed IBM 1401 mainframes that used core memory. In those days, I guess RF wasn't an issue at all. The operators had noticed that a transistor radio parked on top of the mainframe (about 6' high) right above where the memory was, couldn't receive any station at all, and instead produced random noise. When the programmers heard this, they understood what was causing the problem. Soon they had figured out which instructions caused which notes, and eventually wrote a program that, when executed, played the national anthem. I never heard it myself (would have been fired for wasting super-expensive computer time), but it was a story that I never forgot.

A while back, there was a sound track of a F1 race car doing "We are the Champions.

Absolutely gorgeous! I can imagine the rolling hills around Buck's place; it must be even more beautiful.

Same here, too bad it's in the low-50s (F). Mid-60s would be much better. Snowed on Saturday night in the hills and in Santa Cruz (!).

The sky is pretty cloudy here today but that's one up from yesterday when there was enough smoke floating arround to make my eyes sting pretty constantly.
There was a fairly large bush fire about 20 minutes drive out of town on Sunday afternoon through most of Monday so I actually had ash and embers kind of snowing on my house most of Sunday night. It was pretty bizarre...

My parents lived in Eugene, OR when I was born. Earlier that year Mt. St. Helens had exploded, the car, the house, everything was covered in several feet of ash.

I just put together an Excel pivot table that made my computer spit up all over itself. It's only 6.6MB with 14 columns and 1300 rows, on the first sheet...then it has a sheet for every row on the first. That entire first sheet is one giant pivot table collating all the following sheets. A 3800+ with 4GB of ram and 10GB of page file came up and said "not enough resources"...then it crashed in a big way (stopped responding, then hard-lock after "end task").

This thing is making my head hurt.

It would be interesting to try the same action with the same hardware, but running something like SuSE 10, and if at all possible, OpenOffice.

the news is not good. tornadoes in missouri? anyone affected?

Nobody here from Missouri. Blakerwry is from Kansas, which has had horrible weather as well. honold at Storagereview.com lives in St. Louis, if I recall correctly.

Tornadoes are also no big deal, on the weather related disaster scale. Stuff gets knocked over and needs to be re-built, but they only happen in fairly good weather and there's no ice or snow or water or mud or lava to deal with.
The little town where I grew up was largely destroyed by a tornado not too long ago. I drove through it a few months later, and other than some new houses and a few fewer trees, it was the same as it ever was.

Uh ok. Was thinking that what is terrifying must be a big deal. But reflecting on what you said, Tornadoes come and are gone in minutes. No lingering damage such as floods, mud, and whatever else is associated with storms. And damage is quite localized.

So 1300 sheets???

Yep. It includes all the union-related wage contributions for every employee of a large construction company. Each employee has their own sheet, then the first sheet includes a series of summaries about them. An absolute mess.

Thanks DD. I asked because I thought there was a limit on the # worksheets. Checking Excel 2003, I see that "Sheest in a workbook: Limited by available memory". I'm amazed.

This morning was really nice. Before the sun came up over the horizon, the full moon was setting over the ocean. My camera wasn't set up for taking any long exposure pictures, so I didn't capture the moment. :( But the site was still beautiful.

This past Wednesday I achieved a personal goal. For the first time in my life I was able to run a full mile non-stop. I made the full mile in 12:18. Shortly after I had to stop running because I was tired, but I made the mile!

On another random note, I got a flat tire today...that was mildly annoying and costly. :-? Someone left a tool on the ground and when I ran over it, it gashed into my sidewall, killing the tire. It was even making the squealing noise as it deflated...I watched in agony as it died a mild death. So I put the spare on (one of the tiny ones) and drove 45 miles home using it. The tire wasn't scary to ride on, but what was scary was trying to actually drive the speed limit... People flew by like I was standing still.

Great job, Doug! I wonder at what distance I'll pass out. I'm just an extension of my chair.

Sorry about your tyre. Flats are so rare these days, there has to be a man-made cause for them. If the tyres on the car are replacements, didn't you get the hazard warranty when you bought them?

In my situation procrastination actually paid off for once. My tires are the stock OEM's which came with the car (so no road hazard repair). They have over 50K miles on them and back in December I was about to replace them. I even went as far as getting a quote on a set of yokohama's V4S's (which came highly recommended for my car's tire size). I procrastinated because I didn't want to spend the money (along with a bunch of other crap going on in my life), so I did nothing. Well, I'm happy I did nothing because I would have killed a new tire. So I ended spending more than I wanted tonight because I'm in a bind without a normal tire (the spare is limited use only) so I bought 5 new tires today, 4 of which won't be in for a week because the Yokohama's need to be ordered. Now I have 3 Michelin’s and a MasterCraft on my car until the new set come in. I happen to have an odd sized tire, so it cost more even for cheapo’s (215 50 R17 [V rated] for anyone who cares about that stuff).

I found out today that my ex-, who is 29 years old, very probably has breast cancer.

:(

She had two aunts who died of breast cancer, one at 34 and the other at 37.

:( :( :(

And I'm going to say something here:
I'm an atheist. I don't believe in any kind of higher power. It is really awful that the strongest sentiment that I can factually express is "I hope that you will be well soon." That just sounds weak. I felt foolish saying that, but the strongest expressions of sympathy and well-wishing I can think of all seem to be spiritual in origin.

My wife's 2 sisters have had mastectomies within a year of each other. They also underwent chemotherapy treatments right after their surgeries. The tendencies toward getting some cancers seem to be inherited. Hoping my wife won't be affected.

Still, the possibility of surviving cancer lies in early detection. I do hope that your former girlfriend being only 29 means they saw the disease quite early.

It's hard, but try not to worry too much about it. There's little you can do and you won't help her by developping a cancer of your own.

That sucks.
If it is posible, be with her during treatments and doctor visits. Sometimes just holding her hand or a hug makes all the difference. You don't have to say anything.

So sorry to hear that Merc, that's awfully young to be having a problem like that. Early detection and aggressive treatment are key. I wish her speedy and complete healing.

Wow, I haven't been here for a few days and now this terrible news. :( Be strong for her sake. More than that, see what's available with alternative treatments if this does indeed turn out to be cancer. For what it's worth, my mom has several friends who have had breast cancer and gotten past it. Treatments are getting better all the time. Other than that I'm really at a loss for words. Getting anything that serious at 29 is horrible.
