Walmart is the drain filter of humanity.* I'm not saying you are a bad-looking guy, just that using walmart for comparison is not unbiased.

*Rondom thought: If only we had a garbage disposal instead of a filter, we would be much better off.

My stuff:

Today was the first major rain of the season. My 45-minute drive home took 3 hours, with over 20 accidents still in the lanes as I drove past.

Hey, Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize!

What has President Dickweasel done lately?
Does anyone here still think W. was in any way, shape or form good for the country or the world?

My thought for the day:

I went to Walmart today, and I realized that I cannot in fact be a bad-looking guy, because I am positive I was the best looking person in the building for as long as I was there.

Was that inclusive of the cashiers and the patrons? They look OK in the TV commercials. ;)

House hunters find "buyer's paradise" in Detroit

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071007/us_nm/detroit_housing_dc_2;_ylt=AmtpuZ5H6Akb2Nykry_GP08E1vAI

So I was looking at a flyer a local real estate broker was leaving at the doorsteps in my neighborhood (on the westside but not really an upscale neighborhood, lots of old WWII tract homes, and still some single story appartment buildings not yet bulldozed for newer, much larger/longer 2-3 story appt buildings. WWII tract home, modest improvements, but not fully remodeled or such. 1014SF, 3 bed + 1 Bath sold recently for $826,000. Damn, along with the laser intrusion sniper system to kill the intruders/robbers, you could buy a friggin manson and have it fully updated with friggin high-tech everything for about the same price in Detroit.

And now for something completely different. (not & just for the record, I'm not "xUKHCx")

Hey, Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize!

What has President Dickweasel done lately?
Does anyone here still think W. was in any way, shape or form good for the country or the world?

What did President (American Indian nickname) "squirts much jizz" do for the US? What would Billary do for the US, except make it worse off than under her husband? What would Tipper do to Merc, put him in jail I think, all that pr0n you know, menace to society, violent 1st Person shooter games, GTA, etc, all banned by Tipper, lol.

I think we need to change the constitution and elect The Govenator for Pres. hehe, hehe (doing my Arnold laugh :D).

Honestly I don't know why Merc just doesn't get a Mac and be done with it, so he can rant and rave among all the other Mac geeks of the same mindset over on Macrumors.com.

Look, Apple has a tribute to Apple Board Member Al Gore on their site, and this thread about it is already at 200+ posts and growing.

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=367848

The politics sub-forum thead on Gore's Nobel is only 126 posts so far, with some nice dissenting opinions about Apple's stawarth board member, lol.

xUKHCx said:
Yeah lets not forget there use of scientifically disproven facts, or Al gore sensationalist movie. Don't get me wrong i'm all for improving the world we live in but you have to use "facts" carefully.

Only took four replies. This thread is going to progress nicely :D.

p.s. It's 'their' not 'there'.

I agree. Gore is well-known for taking credit where credit is not due.

The Nobel Committee would disagree with you there ;).

Well the wording of the prize is quite telling

"for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change"

So all Al-gore could've done to get this prize is accumlate the "facts" and then make the general public aware. Which in his position isn't very hard.

This is just so cute.

This doesn't need to go down the route of personal attacks. My head is not in my arse. The old arguement of the nay sayers being paid off by the corporations is getting a tad tiersome. And it works both ways the ammount of people who earn their living off climate change is huge why would you want to break that bubble.

To put my views into perspective I have actually done, when compared to most people, extensive research on this matter. What is was referring to was the IPCC use of what has been shown to be wrong in peer review process. So please contribute something to the discussion rather than personal attacks. By the way where did I say that global warming/climate change wasn't happening. So perhaps you actually read and understand what is being said before replying next time.

Don't patronise me.

Kottke's got an interesting take on this:

Actually it was a Keynote presentation ;)

This system is a dedicated firewall, the OS does nothing but route and filter traffic between Ethernet ports (like a Linksys router). It just happens to be on steroids: A64 3000+, 512MB of RAM, and a 32GB 10k RPM hard drive in a Tyan 1U server chassis. I'm running antivirus, content filtering, QoS, DHCP, Proxy Caching, and ~12 site to site VPN connections off it. Still overkill.

It probably generates about 150W of heat, I don't think that would be enough for the purpose. But the rack in total is 67A@120V = 8040 Watts! That is more than enough ;)

I have a cheap tablet PC in there, for surfing on the can. It can also stream music via wireless. I haven't installed speakers yet, I'll probably wait until we buy a house.

My trusty VX9800 cellphone seems to have bricked itself. I just glanced over at it, and the "Verizon Wireless" boot screen is displayed and the status LED is red. Nothing is happening. Every minute or so it goes blank and seems to reboot back to the same screen.

Removing the battery for a minute didn't help. Not really sure what to try next...

Based on many forum posts around the 'net, my phone is toast. Of course, I never did get around to backing up my contacts (100+), many of which I don't have elsewhere.

I'll start a cellphone thread and see what's what.

Why do you need audio in the restroom?

A few easy answers:
Get a boombox with detachable speakers that use real speaker wire. Run the speakers to strategic places in the ceiling.

Get a pair of 900MHz wireless speakers. Put them in the ceiling.

Get a pair of 802.11 speakers. Put them in the ceiling.

The down side to doing wireless speakers is that they can create or be subject to interference. Plus, in a bathroom or any other public place, you're better off with a mono source, rather than stereo; maybe you should just put in one speaker to see how that goes.

Also congratulations to ddrueding for his newfound hairy bits. ;)

Am I the only person to have countless problems connecting to SF the past few days? I seem to be able to access it at work now, but I am starting to think that the DNS that my ISP assigns me to at home does not have the entry for SF.

No issues here. I use the following DNS servers:

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.4

Hmmm, those #'s look funny, is that the full address you enter for domains to search for in your network setup window?

...continuing with my temporary warped sense of humor/macbre from the Erotic Ghost Story movie, the movie thread (Lost62000 will be lost to connect the dots, and Merc will have a headache and not want to have sex tonight with his perfect mate, lol).

Cause I know none of you will click on the link and actually read the whole article (tons of other "fun" stuff on this site, though not particularity interesting for accuracy or plausibility :D) ...then there are the jokes that are bound to come up "I had sex with her, I'm sure she was a robot, a total phoney" :p ):
Forecast: Sex and Marriage with Robots by 2050

Humans could marry robots within the century. And consummate those vows.
"My forecast is that around 2050, the state of Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize marriages with robots," artificial intelligence researcher David Levy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands told LiveScience. Levy recently completed his Ph.D. work on the subject of human-robot relationships, covering many of the privileges and practices that generally come with marriage as well as outside of it.
At first, sex with robots might be considered geeky, "but once you have a story like 'I had sex with a robot, and it was great!' appear someplace like Cosmo magazine, I'd expect many people to jump on the bandwagon," Levy said.
Pygmalion to Roomba
The idea of romance between humanity and our artistic and/or mechanical creations dates back to ancient times, with the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion falling in love with the ivory statue he made named Galatea, to which the goddess Venus eventually granted life.
This notion persists in modern times. Not only has science fiction explored this idea, but 40 years ago, scientists noticed that students at times became unusually attracted to ELIZA, a computer program designed to ask questions and mimic a psychotherapist.
"There's a trend of robots becoming more human-like in appearance and coming more in contact with humans," Levy said. "At first robots were used impersonally, in factories where they helped build automobiles, for instance. Then they were used in offices to deliver mail, or to show visitors around museums, or in homes as vacuum cleaners, such as with the Roomba. Now you have robot toys, like Sony's Aibo robot dog, or Tickle Me Elmos, or digital pets like Tamagotchis."
In his thesis, "Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners," Levy conjectures that robots will become so human-like in appearance, function and personality that many people will fall in love with them, have sex with them and even marry them.
"It may sound a little weird, but it isn't," Levy said. "Love and sex with robots are inevitable."
Sex in 5 years
Levy argues that psychologists have identified roughly a dozen basic reasons why people fall in love, "and almost all of them could apply to human-robot relationships. For instance, one thing that prompts people to fall in love are similarities in personality and knowledge, and all of this is programmable. Another reason people are more likely to fall in love is if they know the other person likes them, and that's programmable too."
In 2006, Henrik Christensen, founder of the European Robotics Research Network, predicted that people will be having sex with robots within five years, and Levy thinks that's quite likely. There are companies that already sell realistic sex dolls, "and it's just a matter of adding some electronics to them to add some vibration," he said, or endowing the robots with a few audio responses. "That's fairly primitive in terms of robotics, but the technology is already there."
As software becomes more advanced and the relationship between humans and robots becomes more personal, marriage could result. "One hundred years ago, interracial marriage and same-sex marriages were illegal in the United States. Interracial marriage has been legal now for 50 years, and same-sex marriage is legal in some parts of the states," Levy said. "There has been this trend in marriage where each partner gets to make their own choice of who they want to be with."
"The question is not if this will happen, but when," Levy said. "I am convinced the answer is much earlier than you think."
When and where it'll happen
Levy predicts Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize human-robot marriage. "Massachusetts is more liberal than most other jurisdictions in the United States and has been at the forefront of same-sex marriage," Levy said. "There's also a lot of high-tech research there at places like MIT."
Although roboticist Ronald Arkin at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta does not think human-robot marriages will be legal anywhere by 2050, "anything's possible. And just because it's not legal doesn't mean people won't try it," he told LiveScience.
"Humans are very unusual creatures," Arkin said. "If you ask me if every human will want to marry a robot, my answer is probably not. But will there be a subset of people? There are people ready right now to marry sex toys."
The main benefit of human-robot marriage could be to make people who otherwise could not get married happier, "people who find it hard to form relationships, because they are extremely shy, or have psychological problems, or are just plain ugly or have unpleasant personalities," Levy said. "Of course, such people who completely give up the idea of forming relationships with other people are going to be few and far between, but they will be out there."
Ethical questions
The possibility of sex with robots could prove a mixed bag for humanity. For instance, robot sex could provide an outlet for criminal sexual urges. "If you have pedophiles and you let them use a robotic child, will that reduce the incidence of them abusing real children, or will it increase it?" Arkin asked. "I don't think anyone has the answers for that yet—that's where future research needs to be done."
Keeping a robot for sex could reduce human prostitution and the problems that come with it. However, "in a marriage or other relationship, one partner could be jealous or consider it infidelity if the other used a robot," Levy said. "But who knows, maybe some other relationships could welcome a robot. Instead of a woman saying, 'Darling, not tonight, I have a headache,' you could get 'Darling, I have a headache, why not use your robot?'"
Arkin noted that "if we allow robots to become a part of everyday life and bond with them, we'll have to ask questions about what's going to happen to our social fabric. How will they change humanity and civilization? I don't have any answers, but I think it's something we need to study. There's a real potential for intimacy here, where humans become psychologically and emotionally attached to these devices in ways we wouldn't to a vibrator."
Levy is currently writing a paper on the ethical treatment of robots. When it comes to sex and love with robots, "the ethical issues on how to treat them are something we'll have to consider very seriously, and they're very complicated issues," Levy said.
Levy successfully defended his thesis Oct. 11.
Geez, Sean Young was in her early 20's when she appeared along side Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, wow what a *hot* android, I'd have sex with her :D (umm, maybe not, she was a cold emotional time bomb of an ice princess in that movie). Though in real life, SY is totally whack, almost as nutty as actress Bei Ling. Saw her on the Letterman show many years ago, said she had a body double for her sex scenes in a recent movie, that her real breasts are shapped like a banana, lol. Whatever, she's a total nutcase, would not get near her with a 10ft pole.

hmmmm. When I first watched Blade Runner (I don't remember when, just that I was still young then) I thought to myself, what a great movie (what was it about? huh?) Oh! Sean Young was sooooooo (sigh!)

You mean, that's the reason why I thought the movie was great, and also the reason why I didn't get to know what the movie was about?

Actually, I don't think it's a DNS problem now. Vista provides me with this useful bit of troubleshooting:

Why do I have to have TCP port 80 open on my firewall? I don't for any other site.

I suspect it means "out" thought port 80. That is the new thing in firewalls, blocking traffic both ways and creating rules both ways. The site should not require unsolicited traffic into your machine on any port.

Hmm... well nothing has changed in my setup in the last 3 months, and certainly no change to my Linksys router/NAT firewall. Every other internet site works except SF.

I haven't had this many problems sleeping in years. When I was in High School, I'd give up trying to sleep at around 2 AM and take huge walks around town for hours.

When I was doing the .com thing I would just go to work, it motivated the staff knowing that the boss was working 15 hour days.

Now I'm actually trying to grow up a little. I'm working with an accountant to settle the last 10 years worth of taxes, I'm planning on getting married, and by this time next year I'm aiming to have a salaried job (for the first time in my life) and own a house. Health insurance, life insurance, bank accounts, credit cards....mortgage?

All of these things are new to me, and it's keeping me up at night ;)
