Please explain to me the advantage of carbon fiber for an SSD enclosure. Does it dissipate heat better than aluminium? Is someone weak enough to notice the slight weight difference? Will the flash memory chips perform better, being all happy to be surrounded in a rich carbon fiber housing?

Or do you just plan to play baseball with the drive and hope it'll last longer with a carbon fiber casing?

Somewhere in time.
How are the hard drives distributed? Are they shipped directly from the Asian manufacturer to the Neweggs? It is interesting that Newegg is shipping drives that are less than a week old.
Some distributors will do the logistics work for high-volume retailers. That's how Buy.com got started; never held any stock. The items ordered on buy.com were shipped directly from Merisel or another distributor direct to the buyer. This eliminates one layer/transaction.

It was shipped with the eggs. Newegg must be their own distributor.

My favorite dream car when growing up was the Celica GT-Four:
I curse myself that I was too young to drive at that time, and therefore could not own such a car.

Could you have afforded to buy one?

No benefit whatsoever. The ideal casing would be a "thin in the middle" heatsink-style aluminum enclosure with flanges on the sides for the mounting points, where all the chips made contact with the aluminum for heat dissipation.

Less than 24 hours before we are scheduled to close (and the close of escrow deadline), my mortgage broker came back saying that they need an additional 10% down or it was off. Crap.

Time to walk away (at least from your mortgage broker/lender). All that shit should have been run through underwriting already. Had this problem ourselves. Underwriting at the prospective mortgage company kept asking for absurd crap, also kept pushing the closing date further and further back (countless days scheduled off for no signing arghhh!). In the end we said fuck it, had the mortgage company send us all the crap that we had already paid for (credit checks, valuation etc), which we then gave to our new lender. And that process was indeed much smoother.

Can you imagine if you were buying a car and the dealer says, "oh yeah, about that 10% down we shook on, if you want to drive this car away today you better make that 20%." And I'm assuming the house is a mite more expensive than an average car.

My best advice is, when they mention closing dates, until they can give you a specific date and time, don't plan on it happening when they say it will. By preparing for disappointment eventual success will be all the sweeter.

Wombat mauls bushfire survivor

r234995_944443.jpg

"A man is recovering in hospital after he was mauled by a wombat at Flowerdale, north-east of Melbourne.

Paramedic Robert Gill said Bruce Kringle, 60, was a survivor of the Black Saturday bushfires and was living in a caravan while he built a new home.

Mr Gill said when the man went to leave the caravan this morning, he found the wombat on his door mat.

"Unfortunately the gentleman stood on the wombat and the wombat proceeded to get rather nasty and attacked him and inflicted some wounds to his lower legs and also to his arms as well," Mr Gill said.

"It took about 20 minutes. He did try to exit the area and get away from the wombat but my belief is that it kept coming at him."

A local resident said the man managed to kill the wombat with an axe.

Mr Gill said other residents had had a run-in with the wombat earlier.

"They were able to exercise caution with him and get rid of him further down the road, but unfortunately the next stop was this gentleman's door mat," he said.

Mr Gill said the man was bitten on the arms and legs and taken to the Northern Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Kringle's friend, Kelly Smith, said the wombat pulled him to the ground in the attack.

"Apparently it attacked his leg and got him to the ground and started attacking his chest, then Brucey killed the wombat and got taken to hospital in an ambulance," she said."

"Singapore police are questioning a man who threatened to bring down a Qantas flight from Sydney to Singapore.

The man was restrained by flight stewards after he made threats to disrupt QF31 using mind power.

According to ABC reporter Nick Luchinelli, who was onboard the flight, it seemed the middle-aged man was either under the influence of drugs or alcohol or both.

He was suffering some sort of delusion and people sitting close to him said he was threatening to use the power of his mind to bring the flight down.

The stewards had to take the threat seriously so he had his arms and legs cuffed and remained that way for the rest of the flight."

Indeed. If one can indeed bend a spoon with the mind what could he do with a pair of airplane wings! And how is restraining his hands and legs going to help? We need a tinfoil hat for these eventualities.

Stick a fork in his rectum and spin him.

How much have you put down already? Less than 20%?
I think what he is doing is possibly illegal too.
There are laws that say the Good faith estimate has to be given to you so far in advance and can only be off by so much.
I guess you'll have to seek other funding and move back the date.

We really need more details. How much are you putting down as a percentage of the house's cost? What was the explanation for why you need an extra 10%? Why wasn't it a problem before / why is it appearing so late?

How did you find your mortgage broker? Have you talked to another one for a 2nd opinion?

Done a bunch of the advice listed above. The plan was for 10% down. We have the other 10%, but need that for house repairs (new roof, insulation, etc). Currently pushing for a 30-day extension of escrow and re-filing for an FHA loan with 3.5% down. So long as the house passes the more stringent inspection, and the seller's bank (short sale) allows the escrow extension, we'll be in better shape then we were going to be (rates have gone down).

Otherwise, there are other houses in the area we are already beginning to look at.

That part is complicated. I have no reservations about the individual that I am working with; I know him and his family personally, we do a lot of business, I know he is competent, etc. However, he works for BofA, and they (as an entity) I have very little faith in. The individual has faith that we can get this through the entity with some modifications. We'll see how it goes.

FWIW, I worked with a friend who I knew for years to refinance, and it didn't end well. I ended up being out the cost of the appraisal, and being unable to refinance because the backers he worked with could not be satisfied. Just because you know the guy talking to you doesn't mean it's all gonna work out.

Have you gotten a 2nd opinion from another lender?

Of course. I got three GFEs even before choosing a friend, just to make sure I was getting a good deal. All the quotes were roughly the same and all the sell lines were roughly the same. I don't believe that this lender is particularly unique in having problems; all the people I know who are in the middle of buying a house have had issues, regardless of their situation.

I certainly understand that possibility, but he isn't just a friend. I know of at least a dozen deals that he has done that have gone well. Of course, every deal is different, and in today's market nothing is certain.

Short sale will always complicate things. IME FHA loans require at least three years left on the roof, though the inspector can usually be flexible.
