I thought kerosene heaters caused asphyxiation?

Anything that has a flame can be asphyxiating.
You just need to be careful. The heater has plenty of fresh air to it and I have carbon monoxcide detectors in the house. Plus a monitored fire alarm system.

Somewhere in time.
A little more basement space taken, but no longer completely hitched to global demand/pricing of natural gas.

Someone told me recently that huge deposits of gas are being found, and installations to purify and package it are being built. He also said gas prices were recently delinked from crude prices because of the abundance of new gas finds. I have no way to corroborate what he said.

Probably no one cares, but H.264 / AVC encoding is quite a bit faster in a 64-bit OS than it is in a 32-bit OS when using x264. In my tests the identical compression job was 25% faster in Win 7 x64 than under Win XP x86. :bomb:

That is impressive, Stereodude. I'm considering running some compression on my BDs that have been ripped using MakeMKV; they are averaging 27GB a piece, and that gets big, fast.

Maybe there should be 128-bit CPUs. When will desktop CPUs and OS support that?

How do you know that the performance increase was the x64 capability as opposed to other differences between XP and Win 7?

I should probably point out that I used a full x64 chain of applications under Windows 7 x64, not just a x64 version of the encoder (which you can't really do anyhow since 32bit apps can't call a x64 app).

Under XP I used DGDecNV (2039), AVIsynth 2.58, and x264 (1947). Under Win 7 x64 I used DGDecNV x64 (2039), AVIsynth 2.58 x64, and x264 x64 (1947).

I also used x264 directly from the command line with a .bat file (no 3rd party front end).
x264.exe --bitrate 19150 --preset veryslow --tune film --weightp 1 --bframes 3 --ref 4 --bluray-compat --b-adapt 2 --vbv-maxrate 40000 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --level 4.1 --keyint 24 --open-gop --slices 4 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 --pass 1 --qpfile ____.chp -o NUL ____.AVS
x264.exe --bitrate 19150 --preset veryslow --tune film --weightp 1 --bframes 3 --ref 4 --bluray-compat --vbv-maxrate 40000 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --level 4.1 --keyint 24 --open-gop --slices 4 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 --pass 2 --qpfile ____.chp -o ____.264 ____.AVS
The two passes under XP x86 took 1107 minutes to complete. Under Windows 7 x64 the two passes took 830 minutes to complete.

No... But I thought it was generally accepted that Windows 7 is slower than XP though.

For typical desktop applications I'm sure that's true. You're doing something that's entirely CPU bound and Microsoft has been screaming and stomping its feet for years that Vista and 7 are faster than XP due to kernel-level improvements that typically don't mean crap when there's tons of extra overhead for operations outside the kernel.

Well according to this review the improvement with x264 HD Benchmark 3.0 is pretty negligible (comparing XP 32-bit to Win 7 32-bit).

That doesn't mean that the 64-bit version of that program couldn't have much better optimization.
Yeah, well... You'll have to understand that I'm not planning to install XP x64 and Windows 7 x86 (32-bit), get them all set up, and spend up to 18 hours encoding just to add some additional data points to this comparison. ;-)

I have a ton of Windows 7 x32 machines here in my office but they're all old C2D machines. I have a Server 2003 x64 system but the hardware isn't close enough to anything else be meaningful for this kind of comparison.

Looking at how my classroom machines perform under XP, Vista and 7 is absolutely where I can see that XP is the performance champ for general purpose use.

Handbrake is what I use. I've been very happy with it. I do two passes at constant bitrate and most of the options bumped way, way up. File size is a judgment call. 6GB for short, animated features and 10GB for long visual spectacles like Return of the King.

I like handbrake a lot, fairly easy with the built in presets and it looks ok on ipad when done.

I just got hit by a nice nigerian scam. I have my phone up on craigslist. Some guy asked about it and I replied with my paypal address and what shipping cost (inside the US). He replied that he has paid me. I also get a email that not even at a glance looks like real paypal mentioning "The transaction will appear in your account immediately we hear from you with the shipping receipt of the item." My fishing filter makes it super obvious. Stay classy Nigeria.

Sorry, my post was late. I was referring to all the programs you are using for your compression in the first place.
Well, I started out with an integrated front end that automated the whole process and didn't like that I couldn't change some of the option, so now I do it all manually. The process is actually more involved. First there's decrypting, then demuxing, then the encoding process I listed, next you remux, then author.

If you're going to leave a 30GB file alone, why not just leave the data as a .MT2S? They're playable in VLC if you have AnyDVD installed.

The MKV files play nicely in MPC-HC, which is the same app I use for everything else. MakeMKV, in my experience, is the fastest, easiest, and most successful method of getting DVDs and BRs into single files. No AnyDVD, no special anything.

Some store online. I don't want their crap every day. At least the Church is only a couple times per week.

I forgot how to do all that stuff. I probably need to log in online.
