You should find out if it's a crime to lie to census workers. If it's not you should start telling all sorts of tall tales to them.

Having so much trouble with corporate IT lately. If I leave my machine connected I get some forced reboots due to landesk "updates" and the notification has a count down timer, if you don't catch it it reboots itself regardless of what you are doing. If you are working in something on our weakish laptops and an update comes through tough, you can't schedule it for later and whatever you are doing comes to a halt. Now this comes through.

Now that Outlook no longer needs the VPN connection to operate normally, many of you rarely connect to the VPN.* New issues have become apparent that are causing an increase in calls to the support centers.
*
Failing to connect to the VPN can result in the following:
*
1.****** You will have no advance warning that your network (and Outlook) password is expiring.
2.****** You will miss critical system security patches and updates via LANDesk
3.****** You will miss critical updates to your Symantec Endpoint Security Suite
4.****** Your VPN certificate will expire preventing access to the VPN
a.****** This will require a trip to the local office or sending in your computer.
b.***** We are about to hit a threshold where hundreds of VPN certificates will be expiring if a VPN connection is not made in time.* This will create a multitude of problems that can be avoided very simply.
*
Our recommendation is to connect to the VPN at least once per week and leave it connected overnight.* This will allow plenty of time for mandatory updates to be pushed down, and for security patches to be installed.
*
Failure to do this will result in additional down time for you that could have been prevented.
*
If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk.

Yes, because I love it when my 50Mbit home internet connectivity has to be piped through to an office that only has a 5Mbit connection and 49 other people using it.

That too AND they reserve bandwidth on the VPN for VOIP traffic. They have no idea what QOS is or how to implement it.

Another ebay thing to * you off today. They charge you a final value fee on the shipping amount quoted on the site. This is assuming you didn't pay for shipping through ebay, just using them to price it. Additionally their pricing on shipping in my experience has always been way off, usually low by half.

They might not be able to properly implement it. QoS doesn't do shit if you can only use it for originating packets. The upstream router needs to understand and respect your QoS needs as well, which often means dealing with an ISP or a corporate WAN guy who doesn't give a crap what you want.

That's the brick wall I ran into when I discussed this with them. Far as I can tell the ISP might want a business account before they turn it on. A business account goes way above my $50 expense reimbursement limit. So I get a throttled pipe to the office and I don't know what their connection is to the outside world.

Is it possible to route only some traffic through a VPN? Say have remote desktop and IE go over the VPN but chrome go through local wireless?

Not that I am allowed to do, I'm sure they would see this as a violation of security too.

The whole system is geared for people that aren't really computer literate.

Actually, it's not that difficult to do with Vista and 7: Just untick the box for "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network." The problem comes from workplace policies that say someone has to send all their traffic through the VPN to the corporate proxy server or something regardless.

My workplace is also guilty of routing traffic through their VPN when I work from home. I've since setup a VM dedicated to my work environment so the VPN traffic is contained at that level rather than my personal desktop.

I understand the usefulness of Twitter for serious journalism or as kind of a replacement for RSS feeds in breaking news of interest to some group of people.
I still don't have any fucking clue what a regular person needs twitter for.

I've occasionally used twitter to follow the geeky sci fi people and music artists I'm a fan of. Doing so has lead to interesting links, stories, and info. I don't find it interesting enough to read every day, but after a few weeks I check in on it.

Where is everyone? Buchner, Buchner...
Cancer reared its ugly head in my life again this past week and I once again lost one of my little treasures -- had her put down yesterday late afternoon/early evening (and I'm very greatful to my vets for that - they met me well after Sat hours, and on a holiday long w/e). An affectionate, smart, and beautiful calico. She had a good long life -- she was one of mother's (before she past), and had out lived her litter siblings, whom I had also assumed care of, so there is some legacy aspect to it as well. Hated making the decision and hated doing it (its a horrible experience, and it certainly doesn't seem to get any easier no matter how many times you've done it) but it was the right thing to do. My last night and up through most of the morning with her were amazing -- the connection we shared in those hours was beyond anything that I know how to describe. If you let yourself get swept away by the emotion and awe that these videos inspire then you may have a sense of what I mean:

Sorry to hear that. In my first 40 years, we had six dogs that died at the vet or had to be put down. It is just awful. I've not had any pets since the 90s due to my personal situation.

Sorry to hear that, cityk. The loss of a companion is hard, whether human, canine, feline, or whatever.

My sister was so attached to her yellow lab (he was like her third son), and when they had to put him down, she didn't want to get another one; the giref was too much for her.

CityK, thanks for sharing that. About two years ago, our best ever 'people' cat suffered renal failure, consequent retina detachment and blindness. When younger she was exceptionally agile, and even in her dotage loved to ride around on our necks/shoulders/backs and just generally hang out with humans: she was a 'talker'. She was very smart and something of an escapologist, able to open sliding aluminium windows by pulling back on the release catch and then tugging the window open. Loved being brushed and had the most magnificent tail that would fluff up like a feather duster.

Waiting with her at the vet's while she staggered around was really tough. Holding her and trying to make her last moments as calm as possible was tougher. But she left us all with special memories of her great personality.

Very sorry to hear that CityK. That has to be one of the more difficult decisions to make in life. I'm happy for her and you that she's no longer suffering. I dread the day I may have to do the same for mine.

I found a tool that lets me download tumblr sites in their entirety about a week ago. Since then I've downloaded about five and a half million pictures.
