Health Care in the USA:

I had a "medical issue" over the weekend.
Normally, when I have medical issues, I let my ex-, who is a physician, take care of it.

But I couldn't do that in this case, because of the body parts involved and her pre-stated preference for not dealing with those parts.

So I had to go to an urgent care clinic, since the issue didn't rise to the level of requiring an emergency room visit and since no general practitioners are going to be open on Sunday, let alone seeing new patients.

So I went to the clinic, the only one in a 25-mile radius of my apartment with Sunday hours.

And there I waited for SEVEN HOURS to see a doctor.
The doctor examined me for about two and a half minutes.

Wrote a scrip for amoxacillin. Told me I could get a minor surgery, but I'd need a referral from a GP (that would be TWO doctor visits, one to a GP and another to the guy who'd do the surgery). The surgery would be painful and massively unappealing, and I'd probably require anesthesia ($$$). He also said that aspirin or tylenol would be the best thing for the pain I have. Gee, thanks, doc.

My bill for about three minutes of face time with a doctor was $180. I had to pay all of it; my medical insurance is catastrophic-only coverage. I pay $100 a month for insurance that doesn't even kick in until something happens that costs more than $10,000.

On the way home, I found out that I had the choice of either waiting 'til morning to get my scrip filled, or paying the robbing bastards at the only local 24-hour Pharmacy $75 for 28 pills. I had to wait another hour to have my 28 pills counted by a pharmacist and put into a bottle.

So... I wasted eight hours and around $250 for a VERY SIMPLE scrip for a common antibiotic and three minutes of time from a doctor.
I can't help but think that I just got scammed in every possible way from that whole experience. I wasted a whole day, an amount of money that's equal to about half my monthly rent and didn't get any actual relief for my problem.

I cannot imagine a worse system for dealing with health care. :puke-r:

Yay! My move to the new, new place is taking place. Second move in as many weeks. I plan on being here for a while; it's nice to be back on the peninsula again. 20 minutes from San Francisco, 5 from Stanford, and waking distance to nice restaurants.

It's 2AM and I've been sleeping in my car the last 2 nights...looking forward to sleeping on the floor in my new place!

Yikes! Why are you always moving in such dire straits? Settle down, young man. ;)

Merc, I can identify with your health care system woes... although the wait isn't as long, nor the services as costly in Canada.

Health care is so damn inefficient. There's the wasted dollars, and needless waiting, but the biggest thing that irritates me is the endless string of appointments. You need an appointment with a GP just to get a script, referral, or a test. Then you need an appointment to perform some test, the results of which will prompt your doctor to send you for another test, for which you have to make another appointment. Since the results now indicate that the problem will require the services of a specialist, you need an appointment with the physician you should have seen in the first place (but can't because you need to go through Level 1 support -- the GP's). And it is likely that the specialist you are seeing now will need to requisition some tests and book a follow-up appointment with you to discuss your test result and offer a treatment. Then you will need to book another appointment to see how well your treatment is going.

So that's what, 7 appointments to address one single health issue (assuming it's not a simple as going to a GP and getting a script for something). For me, that's 7 half-days off work just for office visits and tests, never-mind if you have to take several days off work if you have a procedure that requires recovery time. Should you have another health issue during the year, you're looking at over a dozen appointments and almost half your vacation days. Add to that visits to the dentist, physio/chiro, etc., and you can be left with a couple long weekends and that's it.

Things are settling for now. Just got my new place, going to be buying furniture as income allows, establishing my new "work from home"/"brutal commute" schedule. This place is really affordable ($700/mo in Palo Alto is amazing) so that should help me from worrying about my tenuous employment situation.

RE: Health care. I almost like the fact that I don't have insurance; it means I don't even think about going in for anything non-fatal. And I do consider myself quite fortunate to have not had any major maladies in the last decade (since my last doctor's visit). I've broken a few teeth, but they aren't exceptionally painful, and I can still eat, so I'll just ride it out ;)

Hmm, the following springs to mind:

If she's on a conditional 2 year greencard, and hasn't made the two year anniversary date from initial approval and applied for removal of conditions, she could be in some bother, i.e. sent home eventually. You usually can't remove conditions by yourself unless you can prove domestic violence, or that you entered the marriage in good faith and the other party farked you over big time. If she hasn't left him yet, have her wait out the removal of conditions, then she can be free to divorce him (and marry you?)

Thanks for the info Pradeep. I'm pretty sure she doesn't know the conditions, but I suspect they are there. Her husband is here on an EB-2 if that makes a difference.

(and marry you?)

If that were a certainty, this wouldn't be a concern. But it's not, and I don't want anyone dependent on me for any reason, so we need to sort this out.

Thought she was married to a US Citizen. Being married to another permanent resident can cause some issues. But it's better than for her to be here because she married a citizen.

You can probably tell if she is conditional based on what it says on her greencard. What does it say under "Category"? The conditional 2 year period only applies to those marrying US Citizens, who haven't been married for 2 years or more when they have their greeencard interview (Adjustment of Status). If she has a card valid for 10 years from when it was issued, she doesn't have conditions.

Definitely get a good immigration attorney.

There could be a definite reason you are paying $700/month instead of $1100/month: If you are anywhere near Highway 101, then, welcome to gang-land. :drinka:

Well, the East side of 101, anyway. East Palo Alto had the highest murder rate per-capita of the entire United States in 1992.

They bussed EPA kids into my Belmont high school back in the 80's when I attended. There were race riots. (The EPA kids had burned their high school to the ground years before, thus no local high school for them.)

I guess it has changed quite a bit since I moved from the region.

Nope, I'm on El Camino Real a few blocks from Stanford; practically between Stanford University and downtown Palo Alto. Very nice neighborhood. I actually saw a Mercedes SL55 AMG loose a drag race last week (to a Ferrari 550 Maranello) about a block from here.

Yep, hers is good for 10 years...yay. I didn't think it would be that big an issue, considering her divorce would likely take a year or so, and by then we would have a good idea whether it was going to work or not.

I had an abscess develop out of a dead root, required somewhat painful root canal, and then visit to specialist oral surgeon to suck out all the puss above the dead tooth. If I had waited longer (avoided seeing the dentist until there was an ever increasing sore spot above the dead tooth) the infection (on X-ray you could see the small hole developing in my skull from bone deterioration) supposedly could have gone up into the eye-socket area, and from there a quick shot into the brain for a fatality! You're better off spending a few thousand to get those broken teeth fixed whenever you can, IMHO. Buy a $100/prepaid discount dental card plan, you get lower quality dentists (CostCo offers one of these, with eye-care discount plan) but at least you get the problem fixed, at a reduced rate.

Health care is a big problem worldwide (except maybe India, but then the quality is not very high, you don't read about all the malpractice cases, legitimate ones I mean; not like the bogus, Edwards for vice pres, cerebral palsy cases that make smart, scumbag attorney's filthy rich). Get cancer, you're either going to die unnecessarily at an early/premature age, or you'll be bankrupt for a good portion of your life. HMO/PPO's plans in Calif can be had for about $100/mo in ddrueding's case, IIRC. It's not the best kind of health care, but better than nothing. The state requires auto insurance to have a valid driver's license, and that usually costs at least $100/mo, but there is not requirement for health insurance.

I never even think of touching a married woman with a 10-ft pole, just too much stress and complications aren't work it. Unless the divorce papers are in hand, being final; it's stay-away from trouble, in my mind. But we know the young vagabond ddrueding likes to live dangerously, take lots of risks ;), falls in 'love' (or lust is what some of us like to call it, the chemical high goes away after a few years) quickly. Damn $700/mo right next to Stanford, is it a run down student's appt complex? Still hard to believe it's that low being so close to such a pricey private Univ.

Hmm, I'd just dump the foreigner, and hit upon the Stanford seniors with rich daddies. Or find a loose AMG, with an equally loose hottie female driver. I'd like to see both of those drivers involved in the drag race, permanently lose their driver's licenses. Those kind of things are usually done by teenagers, and I see it all the time on the TV news, innocent bystander drivers die from head-on collisions these fools cause when they do these drag races on public roadways. Find a deserted country road, kill yourself, I'm fine with that; just don't put other people like myself at risk of death... f***kers!

I think health care in the UK is pretty good... Public pays for the GP and my employer pays for private if I need a specialist... The last time I went to the doctor was a couple of years ago... I had wax in my ears... Dentists here, are apparently crap unfortunately...

The 101 corridor from East Palo Alto right on over into Mountain View (on both sides of 101 in Mountain View) is a gang-land. Of course, east bay has their gang-lands. DD is well "uphill" from the mayhem.

Well, I have known of Swiss and Britons who come here to the Philippines to have their teeth fixed, saying it is much cheaper to purchase plane tickets and shell out for living quarters and board and pay for Dental Care here than to have their teeth fixed in theri countries.

I was just talking to the girl about health coverage; as one of the things she will lose along with her husband is insurance. The quote she received to continue her current coverage is $500/mo. It seems that you either have useless insurance for piece of mind (like Merc) that doesn't kick in until you wish you were dead, or you pay through the nose for something that you still aren't really happy with and hopefully won't use.

This is actually a really sweet deal. It's a house behind a dive motel; you actually have to drive through their parking lot to get to the house. The upsides are:

1. Very quiet yet close to the main street
2. Very cheap rent for a big house
3. Cheap rooms available for friends who come to visit
Hmm, I'd just dump the foreigner, and hit upon the Stanford seniors with rich daddies.
I don't do college chicks anymore. I'm more of a fan of professors; smart works for me.

Or find a loose AMG, with an equally loose hottie female driver. I'd like to see both of those drivers involved in the drag race, permanently lose their driver's licenses. Dragging on El Camino is quite safe all things considered. It has a large planted median (so no head-ons), it has a large number of traffic lights (so the distances/speeds are small), and it is 3-4 lanes wide (so there is plenty of space).

Whay does she do for a job? Divorce is a qualifying event, she should be able to pick it up thru her work for way less than $500 per month (which I'm assuming is the COBRA rate).

Unless you are going to be the #1 sugardaddy :D

She was an OB/GYN in Moscow. Until she passes the tests here she is a medical assistant (part time) for a small boutique practice that doesn't offer coverage.

What's wrong with American women?

A lot; I'll leave this to others until I'm rested. But on top of all that; there is a lot wrong with Russian men. German men, too, as a matter of fact. It's much easier to be what they want, as their expectations are that much lower. For example; I've found a woman who I have encouraged to feel empowered. So much so that she tells me openly how she feels about sensitive issues (e.g. a now found fondness for porn :eek:wneddnce: ) Yet she still feels that cooking and cleaning is a way to show that she cares about me and our household. The combination of confidence and assertiveness without the trappings of feminism really seems like the way to go. ;)

Yay porn! ;)

Sounds interesting, I would like to hear a few.

My brother participates in a forum called American Women Suck. Now, personally, I disagree with most of the points they raise, but even I would admit there's some truth to some of them. Not the angry, hateful prattle on their main page, but issues like paternal rights and divorce settlements.

On the other hand, my brother has become almost fluent in Russian because he's planning to buy a wife/servant/sex slave.

I arrived in bright and shiny california (LA) this morning. It's a nice 96 degrees F!!! I left the 40 degree weather in MA! I'm sitting in the hotel lobby using my laptop because the wireless connection sucks here. They have a million AP's and it's driving my wireless card bonkers. I'm getting about 5K download speeds. It could be all the geeks here for vmworld saturating it... :)

I just viewed the site on my wife's new Blackberry. I even signed in. Clumsy but I guess it would work in a pinch. We'll have to take it on our next cruise instead of a Laptop.

Oh....'da weather' :) (my favorite thread on SR, except Eugene's turned into even more a censorship freak as of yesterday, than more conservative attitude of this forum)...anyone else think SR is going down the tubes without any new reviews, while wasting time 'monitoring' insignificant B&G threads/posters.

Well it's typical of Santa Ana weather patterns this time of year, where So. Cal. has the hottest temps in the nation (Phoenix for example was 10 degrees cooler than LA...and it was that hot all the way out to the coastal areas). But it won't last, today will be another hot one, but by Wed/Thurs, temps will be slightly below average...thank God, I hate hot weather...umm, except for Ms. Aqua GUI & her cotton ribbed T-tops ;). Jtr & I would both rather have the 40F weather. And if you're really home sick for cooler weather, it's just a hours drive, when the freeway traffic isn't bumper to bumper, to the mountains where the nighttime temps are well below 40F now.

ddrueding cracks me up, his life with women is a soap opera for sure, fun to look at, but I wouldn't for the life of me want to trade places. Not a fan of foreign women as far as the EU, I look across the Pacific to Asian women (I know there's this thing were they claim Asian women, from repressed societies are Friggin wild & sexual, but this the exception, not the norm).

I asked one of the women in my dance class what type of guy she was after (She's Chinese). Her answer?

"Tall white doctor". I think you can tell a lot about what a person is looking for in a relationship by what types of traits they prioritize.
