Thanks for the input guys. I went around today and had a look at the 3 main contenders... In short: 1. It would appear that the Kindle still has sucky PDF support when it comes to graphically intensive PDFs. Simple mainly text based PDFs are fine though. 2. The Kindle works great with Amazon...

They used to, they closed that service a short time ago. However you can still order the individual parts online, it's just not as streamlined as it used to be.

Buying Loongson CPUs from China or some ARM based system or some SPARC based system, running my prefered version of Linux... And all of a sudden Microsoft marketshare has dropped significantly since they don't support anything other than x86/x64 or some variations of ARM.

I haven't watched the clip yet, just read a few summaries and quickly scanned the transcript. The overall premise is correct... corporations don't want to support general purposes computing, they want to sell you an appliance that does 1 thing only (and poorly so you have to upgrade each year)...

Certainly wasn't insisting he was the originator of the concept, but at least in the book he gives good reasons why it should be case and the consequencies of alternate systems, rather than simply stating it as a fact in 1 or 2 lines.

That was the one thing that I really liked about the book, that Heinlein made you think about the value of society and the current freedoms that all enjoy, that maybe those freedoms should be earned individually rather than given. IMHO the book is more a political commentary on western society...
