Thanks for the concern. I'm not in an affected area. I live ~78m above the water line, so even if Greenland's icecap completly melts all of a sudden, I think I'm ok.

    Server rack suggestions?

I've ordered a few cable managers from the Fiberstore. They are a fraction (about ¼) of the price of Startech and Panduit models. I should receive them late next week or the one after. I hope they won't be too cheaply made, but my expectations are low, given the price. The few transceivers...

The GeForce 1030 that should be available mid-May for less than 80U$ should do what you want. If you prefer a Quadro, then the Quadro P400, P600 or P1000 all have the features you want. The GeForce 1030 will only consumes 30W, while the P400, P600 and P1000 consume 30W, 40W and 47W.

Also, you'll probably have to wait until 2019 for the next big thing in CPU architecture. For the remaining of the year and all of 2018, there will only be refinements of what currently exits for consumer CPU models. For servers, that's a completly different story with Skylake-EP and Naples.

    question New Computer

You'll forget about OpenOffice and opt for LibreOffice. However, you'll skip version 5.3.2 as it is slow as shit. Version 5.3.1 in 64 bit currently is the version of choice.

Apparently, there's a platform level workaround that fixes the errata in the C2000 chips. Synology has implemented it in products shipping after February 2017 (read note 1). Still, I'd rather opt for a unit not using this processor.

Is it a done move? Because the RX 580 will launch in 4 days. It will be 10-15% faster than an RX 480, which is pretty much equal to the GTX 1060 with recent drivers' versions. However, if you had a deal on the GTX 1060, then it might be a whole different story, value wise.

Nope. I'm not often sent in the field. So far, I've only been in urban areas and since my presence is essential to the inner workings of the companies, I don't think I'll have to travel far in the foreseable future. The farthest I'll have to go will be Toronto, eventually.

I know it's confusing. You see, it's a revolutionnary concept. We buy stuff that we resell for a profit. Unheard of, I know. I think we should brand and patent it. We should also patent the wheel, because, you guessed it, it was us too.

AMD Ryzen pricing released, Intel cuts prices in anticipation

    1080 Ti announced, $699 on March 5th, 1080 price drop to $499

Hard to tell if AMD's Vega will be able to match this or not. My guess is that Vega will fall in between the 1080 and 1080Ti, but with an MSRP targetting the 1080 directly. That's probably why NVidia bumped the supported RAM frequency for the partners' 1080 designs.
