In case anyone wonders, the reason being my recent production drop is here : https://folding.stanford.edu/home/big-adv-program-ends-january-31/ I knew it was coming and now it's effective. I don't know what's the most effective way to contribute to the project from now on. Based on Handruin's...

Get a pair of Creative T10 instead. Or Logitech Z200 if you want something even cheaper and a bit smaller. If you really want loud, you can go with the Creative T20, but they are bigger. Yes, all of these are Creative Labs, but for 2.0 speakers, they are among the best, or at least were last...

Late Saturday night/early Sunday morning is generally the best time for servers maintenance. It is my designated time frame for performing upgrades on servers at work and it probably is Handruin's too for maintenance on StorageForum.net.

At least she spends time with your daughter. Children don't really see and care about the judgment errors adults do. But they notice the time we spend playing and taking care of them. She might not be a light bulb, but she obviously care about your daughter. I believe there's credit to be...

    Super Flower 2000w PSU.

You'll need to plug it to a 20A circuit not to blow the fuse, in North America at least. Unless your computer is a server, I don't really understand the need for a 2000W power supply. You could plug enough graphic cards on that thing to play Crisis on a quad 4K monitor setup, but who does...

6TB Seagate Hard Drives $199 Shipped Free

It doesn't seem to be thick enough to fit two LFF drives into it. The other possibility giving the enclosure's size, 4x 2TB SFF drives, would cost a lot more than what they ask for it.

    Server 2012 R2 Fileserver with Auto-Tiering

I plan on using deduplication. Also, that file server will be for an office of 30 to 50 employees, but many of them are not your typical MS Office user type. Half of them will probably try to store and run one or more VM over the network. There's also a lot of .iso transfers.

    Server 2012 R2 Fileserver with Auto-Tiering

The higher-end Synology only accept LFF SATA drives and they cost close to 6000$ CDN. I've also looked at QNAP's offerings, but the models with SFF SAS drives cost around 10000$. Both the Synology and QNAP's high-end models use a Xeon E3 for the processing, therefore they are limited to 32GB...

    Haswell Cooling

You do remove the plastic layer at the bottom of the heatsinks before installing them, don't you? A 4790K is not supposed to be very hard to cool, considering it's TDP rating is only 84W. If you don't overclock, even the retail heatsink should be enough.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If you compare both with 25% overprovisioning, the results, particularly on random writes, are comparable. So unless you plan to almost completely fill your drive, you won't see much difference between the two. I would get the slightly cheaper, slightly higher capacity drive.

Time, the x4 M.2 slot on the ASRock Extreme6 uses PCI-E lanes from the x16 PCI-E slot, dropping that one to x8 when used. I doubt Lunar is a hard core gamer, so I don't think it would affect him much. Also, the price I've seen for the Samsung SM951 is around 750U$ for the 512GB model, which...

    question Replacing Netbook

HP RAM on Supermicro server board

32GB DDR4 LRDIMM sticks are still quite rare. It's easier to find the HP part number 726722-S21 than almost any other similar module. Although it is obviously not on Supermicro's compatibility list for their X10 motherboards, since the memory controller is on the processor, I would expect an...

What I don't like with this drive is the unrecoverable error rate : 1 per 10^14. So every 12 drives fill or so, there will be an unrecoverable error. That's a so-so backuping solution.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The 850 Pro uses 3D V-NAND while the 840 EVO uses TLC NAND. Here's your evidence. The 3D V-NAND flash chips are rated for 6000 program/erase cycles while the TLC NAND chips are only good for ~1000 P/E cycles. Even if they would use the same controller, the 850 Pro would outlast the 840 EVO...

I know that a few months ago, I've searched how much it would cost to add an HP-rebranded SSD into an Elitebook laptop. ~700$ is what they asked. There are two Samsung 840 SSD in the review : one EVO and one Pro. The Pro version is still working after 2PTBW, but the EVO crapped out at ~700TBW IIRC. The Pro version doesn't use TLC chips, but the EVO does. I strongly considers the Samsung 850 Pro, but I wouldn't buy an EVO model, even...
