And the extra 1 GB of RAM, USB On-The-Go, etc. My point was that most of the world can't use the Evo 4G LTE because it's a CDMA-only phone and most of the world no longer uses CDMA. Also, apart from the screen, it's not really the same as a One X, losing 2 CPU cores and the Nvidia GPU. But at...

Best TV for a 44" wide space

Good summaries, Chewy. Be warned that some AWD LCD panels, presumably due to their requirements for very fast response times, have more limited viewing angles than you might expect. This doesn't affect LG because they use a passive AWD system instead. Oops, I mean 3D.

Best TV for a 44" wide space

Firstly, 50" is an obsolete size. :p You're looking at pseudo-metric sizes now, eg 55" ~ 140cm, 47" ~120cm. Five to consider would be Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic and Vizio. I have no idea how good Vizio units are, but it was enough to persuade Snowhiker, and Santilli until his acted up. If...

Why are you worried about the animation? It's hardly Windows-style annoying and it doesn't cause any lags that I can see. I don't know why Mercutio gets his knickers in a knot about Touch Wiz. To me it's just a launcher, and if I get tired of it I'll replace it with something else - this is...

You're not making sense. I'm saying: it costs HTC and Samsung considerably more than Apple to make a phone (generally because they use more expensive hardware) and their profit margins are consequentially a small fraction of Apple's. On top of this, Apple makes huge margins on accessories. If...

If you think they can make a profit out of shipping a $10 part, you're living in cloud cuckoo land. Apple gave out cases to fend off potentially massive lawsuits regarding their product's fitness for purpose. Where's the commonality? One option would have been to ship either the tip or the...

    USB On-The-Go

Meh. AFAIK, the demo I linked to only required root access for one minor aspect (a controller mapping I think). The rest of it is now off the shelf. Interestingly, I see that the manufacturer with by far the most models supporting USB OTG is Nokia, followed by Samsung and Sony. Just a glimpse...

    USB On-The-Go

I found this fantastic demo of what you can actually do with the 'USB' port on the Galaxy S3, including USB On-The-Go and MHL (with Bluetooth thrown in for good measure). A PC keyboard(!), external speakers, 3 different game controllers, flash drives, a 2.5" external HDD, a USB hub, an HD TV...

MHL on the S3 uses 11 pins instead of 5. There's speculation is that changes might have been to achieve compatibility with Sony's Mirrorlink, or even the new MHL 2.0. Although it's mainly Samsung's and Sony's platform, MHL is not a proprietary interface. In any case, Samsung is offering a $10...

question How to effectively delete data from magnetic media? I mean professional way.

A drill would probably distort the platters as well as contaminating the interior with magnetic debris. I very much doubt that anyone has equipment that can scan a platter lying still on a table - the tracks are only 75 nanometers wide (including any guard space) and I'd guess there are between...

    Firefox 11.0 is out.

Unit tests are mostly useless, and especially so when you're looking at interaction with 3rd party products. And it's doubtful that whatever use cases they have include a legally-suspect plugin. Once Adobe became involved, they would have felt pressured to can the plugin anyway.

question How to effectively delete data from magnetic media? I mean professional way.

You can get bulk erasers for tapes, but hard drives need a professional degausser. Note that modern media will be unusable after magnetic erasure because of the loss of servo tracks. So you might as well physically destroy the media, which is considerably cheaper. I disagree slightly with...

    Apache OpenOffice vs LibreOffice

Mercutio's analogy is accurate, he's talking about the Protestant Reformation. You seized on the words "schism" and "Orthodox" and ran down the wrong alley and up the garden path. He's also correct in that it never ends: Australian Methodists and Presbyterians combined in 1977 to form the...

I certainly looked at a One X and, when I realized the price advantage, considered it very seriously. Samsung Galaxy Note and pondering future device trends

PenTile attracted some adverse attention on the original Galaxy S, which dropped the pixel density to 233 ppi from the Nexus One's 252. The S2 was only 217 ppi so Samsung elected to add extra subpixels with Super AMOLED Plus. It's worth pointing out that Samsung has improved their PenTile...
