Ivy Bridge-EP (Xeon E5) specifications leaked

I hope we'll buy the new equipment in October this Fall. I'm doing everything I can not to give any reason to anyone in the decision making process to delay the server upgrade. I've made the studies, spec'ed the systems, contacted suppliers and written the plans and reports before anyone even...

Ivy Bridge-EP (Xeon E5) specifications leaked

Those of you curious about the details of the upcoming Ivy Bridge-EP chips that are supposed to be launched this September can view most of their specification on this page on ASRock's website. Only thing missing is the core count, but you can figure it out by the amount of cache (20MB=8 cores...

    XenServer is Free

Would Xen Server 6.2 be a good option to run a bunch of Microsoft Server 2012 std servers in VMs? I was going to recommend to go with Server 2012 Datacenter, even though it is ~3700$ a pop. I would have run the Server 2012 VM under Hyper-V. VMWare VSphere is too expensive, even if it's...

Can I use the power control unit alone or do I have to use it in combo with the Lantronix Spider Duo? I have servers that already have KVM over IP, but which probably cannot be started by the dedicated IPMI port. I'm looking for a solution.

Using an HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 instead of a Thecus N12000Pro for NAS

Some of the folks in that thread had some interesting things to write about a similar project, but the original poster wanted to use ESXi instead of Hyper-V.

Using an HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 instead of a Thecus N12000Pro for NAS

I want to store Hyper-V's virtual machines on a NAS. I originally planned to use a Thecus N12000PRO, but it only has 12x 3.5" bays to store the drives. Since I want to use 2.5" SSD, this is a waste of space. Something like and HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 would be better since I can use more...

Nope. All the computers I use to run the FAH Client are mine and are at my old location. If something happens during the week with my computers, it won't be fixed before...

Yes, except that I'm moving to a new company and they plan to virtualize all their Windows-only server and it's much simpler to port physical Windows installations to Server 2012 Datacenter than it is to Xen Server/KVM/Openstack/Cloudstack. They are eyeing VMWare, but it's an expensive solution...

I installed the 180-days trial of Server 2012 R2 on my latest system and I was equally baffled by the start button. I still haven't installed Classic Shell on it, but it shouldn't be long. Curently, that machine is only used for the FAH client, but I'll make an effort and try to force myself...

    GPU folding is here!

Ok, so with a Project 7625 unit, my GTX 580 achieve 31.7K ppd and with a project 8900 unit, they reach 35K ppd. Still not 39K, but it's closer. They do 27K ppd with a project 8074 unit. And the post #105 of this thread should have been made in the generic Folding@Home thread. Sorry for that.

I did not enabled beta units on my GTX 580 because I had an issue with one several months ago. I've just re-enabled them. I've also set the control panel to max 3D performances for the FAHCore, so that it doesn't throtle while the FAH client is working. Regarding my HD 7970, which runs at...

    GPU folding is here!

Just so that people know, a Radeon HD 7970 produces more like 76K ppd rather than 100K ppd. A Radeon HD 7870XT yields ~50K ppd. Both are a lot more rewarding than my older GTX 580 (~27K ppd).

I hope you rent more than a 1U space at the datacenter. You need to put a firewall between ESXi and the web. Then, you connect your ESXi server to the firewall and only receive traffic through it. It could be a secured openVPN server too. Anyway, you know more than I do how to configure a...

You are aware that Dave's computer doesn't look like shit partly because he paid close to 5 grand for it, do you? Of course, you can have something neat for a fifth of that amount, but normally, you won't end up with a tidy interior with a 40$ enclosure and a generic power supply.
