My 2nd laptop, a Lenovo Thinkpad or a Toshiba Tecra?

The SSD comes in a refurb computer. You don't know how much life is left into it. How many times its memory cells have been written. Granted, the chances that the drive is far in its lifespan are slim. I know I wouldn't risk it.

My 2nd laptop, a Lenovo Thinkpad or a Toshiba Tecra?

There was a significant performance gap between the Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs and the previous generaion. With that in mind, I'd pass. Even considering the SSD and 8GB RAM.

New inexpensive build - how did I do?

I'd take the quad-core. First, it's easier to change a graphic card afterward than swapping a CPU (thermal paste, heatsink installation, often cramped location to connect the CPU fan cable). Secondly, an i5 3570+HD7750 needs less electrical juice than an i3-3220+HD7850. Not much less, but a...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I don't remember having read or heard about how well the M4 did in RAID arrays, but at those capacities, the M500 is starting to look like an interesting alternative in a NAS/SAN. Sure, its write endurance isn't very high, but if you don't write large amount of data, it could be interesting.

Eh...According to Reseller Ratings, it scores 9.6/10. How is that bad? And yes, we do have approved vendors, but they don't always have the parts I'm looking. As I wrote earlier, Superbiiz's prices on certain items are very low compared to what I can find elsewhere, hence my interest.

Speaking of IOps, it would probably be best if I'd use an Enterprise-class drive, like a Seagate Constellation ES.3 for instance. Those are typically capable of double the IOps that consumer drives can achieve. The link between both NAS wouldn't be 10 miles long. The SFP+ DAC cables are 1...
