Old i7 vs. New i5 (or Xeon E3)

MY two i7 2600 are, according to FAH stats, roughly 40% faster than my i7 960. The i7 960, however, outproduces a SandyBrisge i5 by ~30%, also for Folding@home. I realise that most people don't use their computers for distributed computing, but that's the only test I've run systematically on...

According to the reviews posted on that page, it is quite promising for a relatively compact tower heatsink. None of the reviews are from my favorite sites, but I don't think they can all be very far from the truth.

You can use the Linux version on BSD and it's supposed to work according to what I read in Stanford's forums. Also, at least in PC-BSD, you can directly install the FAH client (albeit an aging one) directly from the packet installer/updater tool (which I forgot the name of). It's possible to...

I have no problem using zones instead of Xen Server if the performance is similar or better and if I can shuffle my VMs like cards in a deck of cards. I just have to learn how to do it and I'll be in business. I'll re-check the pdf you linked above about it. And the UDF was because I only...

I don't think there's a performance difference between both. Linux client, hand down. Ddrueding uses the v.7 beta client on his mentally-ill-oriented server box and the results are good. If you don't want to f**k around too much, the old stable release for Linux is ok too. On a *ubuntu...

Not elegant and doesn't make Solaris any less retarded on that aspect. I don't want to have to perform a rain dance just to get basic functionality. Besides, I'm trying to redesign the configuration of their main program, which actually runs on several Solaris 10 boxes and I just don't see...

    Crucial M4 firmware bug

There's a new firmware update for the m4 series. It's not related to the bug originally mentioned in this thread, but it's supposed to improve compatibility and performance under heavy loads. There's a Windows updater and it's supposed to be non-destructive.

I used to have a laptop (IBM Thinkpad R50p) with a 15" screen and a 1600x1200 definition and I liked it a lot. I found it easy to read, but perhaps someone with a challenged near-sight might think otherwise. So I don't think 1080p on a 15.6" screen is a good idea for someone who has reading...

    Finally got the toaster working...

The only one I've seen with both eSATA and USB 3.0 was a 130$ toaster from Mediasonic. At that price, it makes no sense. You're better of with two 30$ cheapo docking stations. There's also the upcoming Vantec NST-D300SU3-BK, but it doesn't seem to be available yet.

For the record, without searching too much, the cheapest I can get is the EagleTech ET-CSKSU3-BK and it's 30$. It's USB 3.0 only, which should be enough as it's almost as fast as eSATA.

IMO, they are all crap. Buy the cheapest that fits your needs and free your mind of all hopes that it'll last. I wouldn't buy a brand name because they usually charge more for it, but don't last any longer.

    Mini-ITX motherboard of my dreams.

There's an 8-phase voltage regulation design on the add-on module, so overclocking stability should be facilitated by this. All the small chassis I've found wouldn't be able to house a cooler as big as the Thermaltight Archon. It should be possible though, to use the Noctua NH-C14 with only...

3 years is just too long for WD

Well, of course they don't need to put as much butter to grease the bearing since the actuator is smaller in a 2.5" drive. I'd never have guessed that's what they meant by organic bearing oil.

3 years is just too long for WD

I've just realized that WD's Scorpio Black 500GB (WD5000BPKT) is only ~10$ more than the desktop Caviar Blue of a similar capacity, but it carries a 5-years warranty instead of only two. IMO, it's worth the additional 10$. The performances of both drives should be comparable.
