    Looming Silicon Wafer Shortage

Does it really matter? If manufacturer X wants to make a product, but has to pay more for the wafers, the product is going to cost more.

    Looming Silicon Wafer Shortage

Looks like we're going to have to bend over a little more.... Nvidia GPU, Intel CPU, and AMD tech prices will skyrocket as silicon costs continue to soar

And, FYI, it turns out that AMD is not getting access to any IP. They're just supplying a custom GPU chip that Intel will integrate. So, unless AMD is hiring Intel, this isn't going to fix their interposer problems with Vega.

Xeon Phi is a day late and a dollar short. While it must be good for something, nVidia is eating their lunch. My feeling is that they switched it from being an add-in board to a central processor in order to get some kind of leg-up on Volta, but I can't figure out what it is. Intel has taken...

    Amtel is Real

Intel has tried and failed at GPUs. Their iGPUs are terrible and Larrabee never even made it to the discrete market. If the enemy in this space is nVidia, AMD really is their only hope. One thing that I have seen in talk about this project is that Intel doesn't seem to be using its multi-chip...

    Amtel is Real

I think that this is just a continuation of the tango that Intel and AMD have been in for decades. As long as CPUs and GPUs are there to prop each other up, AMD will always have a place because neither Intel nor nVidia can buy them for the part that they don't have. Intel also realised that...

Intel Coffee Lake Another Rush Job

I don't think that the future is near enough. Peripherals at the faster standards will be hard to find until it's pushed out to motherboards. Since Intel has rehashed Kaby Lake for Coffee Lake, that means at least one more chip generation. And then, for backwards compatibility, the...

Intel Coffee Lake Another Rush Job

Do you have any info on this? I know that people are having trouble, but it doesn't seem to be a design issue. (Unless you count being a little more complicated than seems necessary a design issue.) TR4 is practically identical to SP3, so I can't imagine that this was a rush job.

There should be more chips as the quarter wears on, but don't expect volume until next year, when lower-end motherboards come out. Someone was complaining (Linus?) that they didn't even make the socket different. You can literally place a chip into the wrong kind of motherboard. If...

All WPA2 WiFi security is broken?

None of my network infrastructure devices needed an update (they're apparently not susceptible to the hack). Since only one side needs to be safe, I only have to worry when attached to other networks. Also, since the hack works on HTTP injection, using encrypted connections totally defeats it.

Intel Coffee Lake Another Rush Job

You need to get your head out of your Intel. AMD has had relatively inexpensive six-cores for years. I'm pretty sure that AMD has released the first dual, triple, quad, hex, and octo core x86 chips for the desktop. While they continue to have the edge in IPC, Intel is playing catch-up in the...
