I think that it's removable. Might make more sense in a dense rack mount case.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Isn't that up to the motherboard? My understanding is that the only chip on the board is a PCIe switch to split the lanes from x16 slot into four x4 M.2 connectors.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Maybe you also missed the increase in RAM prices. I'd say that AMD finally pushing out processors using DDR4 was the reason, but a few months ago I sold some used DDR3 sticks for more than I paid for them.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm afraid that SSDs will run into the semiconductor fab crunch. They just don't have the capacity to put out all of this flash, RAM, and processors.

Code42 has made me an offer to buy out the rest of my current subscription, but I'll lose all of my previously backed-up data. One thing that I'm liking about using ACD is that it feels like my data belongs to me, and I can access it however I want. CrashPlan just puts things in my way.

This is beyond my pay grade, but Debian's work around for the licensing issue is to not include ZFS on precompiled kernels and to only distribute ZoL as contributed source code. http://blog.halon.org.uk/2016/01/on-zfs-in-debian/ If this approach is legitimate, I'm surprised that none of the...

I'm not a lawyer, and I don't play one on TV... But, as I understand it, anyone can compile whatever they want into their own Linux kernel, but you can't modify the code (without contributing it back under the GPL) and you can't distribute it.

After furthur research, it appears that Cannonical is simply violating the license for Linux. It seems like the GPL folks are up in arms about it because this could make it possible to to combine GPL and non-GPL code, i.e. proprietary code that's not open. It totally defeats the point of the...

I don't question the stability of ZFS. Everybody but Oracle is working from the same code. On the other hand, ZFS does not run natively on Linux because you can't include it in the kernel. As I understand it, Ubuntu implements ZFS using FUSE. So, it runs in user space, which is generally...

I guess that you've sat on the same ISP for a *very* long time. I quit using ISP e-mail over ten years ago. Too much hassle when switching. Have you considered rolling your own server? You'll never be dependent on someone else to provide you with the service, ever.

As I understand it, BTRFS is the red-headed step-child at Oracle. It was what they were working on to compete with ZFS until they bought Sun. The only reason that BTRFS is moving forward is because Oracle won't release ZFS with a license compatible with the Linux GPL. There's probably a...
