Intel X299: What is it good for?

We are approaching a physical barrier on the tricks they've been using to up IPC. Also, Intel has been sending out a series of minor increases in performance over the last decade and consumers have been buying it. This is probably part of the reason why they seem caught off guard by AMD's new...

Intel X299: What is it good for?

Do you know anybody who runs exactly one application at a time? And for anyone who might lay down for an i9 or Threadripper based system, do they not know why they're buying all of those extra cores? If you don't have a use where throwing extra cores at it helps, then there's little reason to...

Would you worry about this reallocated sector count?

That would be the only number that worries me. The drive, however, came with over 80 bad blocks. And, it should be overprovisioned by about 2.4%.

Would you worry about this reallocated sector count?

SMART data from SSDs is different than coming from spinning disks. Who is the drive's manufacturer and what does their software say about the state of the disk?

Intel X299: What is it good for?

The announced pricing on the yet-to-be-released Intel i9s looks kind of stupid now. Again, we'll have to see how AMD executes, but X299 is starting to look like a great way for people with more money than sense to show off their wealth.

BIP 91 apparently passed the 80% threshold this morning, so BTC is popping. I also saw that Ethereum is looking to push off the difficulty bomb, which will allow it to be mined with GPUs for at least another year.

    Cryptocurrency Mining and GPUs

I'm sure that there are people who are, but these are bigwigs with hundreds of GPUs running. I saw that, before a recent difficulty increase in Ethereum mining, a big miner left and cashed out. At the time, he liquidated Ethereum worth hundreds of thousands.

    Cryptocurrency Mining and GPUs

There does seem to be a lot of hand wringing over the August 1 deadline. The fear of a hard fork (Bitcoin splitting into two currencies) is high. This happened to Ethereum, and it seems to have done quite well. Like this guy? I still see people getting into cryptocurrency mining, thinking...

    Cryptocurrency Mining and GPUs

I can't speak to other cryptocurrencies, but Ethereum is ASIC resistant. That's part of the reason that the GPU situation has gotten so bad. With Bitcoin, once ASICs came in, GPU mining basically died. With Ethereum, it'll be until be either until it becomes too unprofitable, or they change...

    Cryptocurrency Mining and GPUs

Cryptocurrency miners ate the GPU market. Mid-range cards are hard to find and everything else is overpriced. I looked into mining for fun and profit, but it turns out the best bet was to sell my card, just like selling shovels to gold miners in a rush. Last week, I sold my year-old reference...

    Epyc vs Intel Scalable Xeon

One thing that I think that Epyc has going for it is a simple and relatively flat model structure. Intel spends too much effort slicing and dicing the market to squeeze a little more money, and it's going to confuse some people.

Intel X299: What is it good for?

One thing that I've found confusing is that Intel appears to have stuck with large, monolithic dies for high core count processors. This makes them expensive. With Epyc (and Threadripper, which is really just half of an Epyc processor), AMD is gluing pieces of silicon together with their...
