Building a home NAS - feedback on build

Handy, I'm too lazy to read if you already posted, but what drives are you using? Backplane firmware and HDD firmware can be/become incompatible.

    Secondary monitor

However, as I have mentioned in the past, I still prefer 4:3 ratio monitors under 23" for business-type work. Typical documentation (e.g. report, spreadsheet, letter) is still more portrait in size (not that some spreadsheets aren't stupidly wide, but they seem to not be the norm). Even...

    Secondary monitor

Typically, I distance myself from all things Asus. However, their current line of VW/VH monitors are worth the cost, in my opinion. I have been using their VW 19" and VH 23" monitors with success for budget and mid-range systems. Even at the high-end, the 23" is nice, except when a more accurate...

I also use two monitors: 23" @ 1920x1280 19" @ 1280x1024 I like the setup with my 23" being the main monitor or the one where I work on projects. The secondary monitor is for internet browsing, email, and miscellaneous items. I like that my secondary monitor is not widescreen.

    Samsung Test

I'm not sure about the tool you are mentioning, but the DOS tool I've used from Samsung is much better than any other HDD manufacturer's tools I've used. It takes longer, but does a much more thorough test.

Yeah, this would be going into either a CoolerMaster Centurion 541 or Antec Solo. Obviously, it would have better cooling in the Solo. But more than likely it would be used in the Centurion.

    Affordable graphics cards

That is a neat little card. Performance-wise it is at the very low end, with only the GT 210 scoring worse. At that price point, I would rather use an IGP and keep the computer price where it is. At the next level (this is of course how I tier my computers, I'm not speaking for anyone else) is...

    Affordable graphics cards

Most customers are cheap, but love to complain. What they want and what they want to pay is woefully disparate. So, the goal to have a budget system with a decent price and a snappy response. An IGP doesn’t give the quickness you’d expect at 1920 x 1080 with several productivity applications...

    Affordable graphics cards

Trying to get a sub-$100 card that doesn't feel like an IGP (and I'm saying modern IGPs are in good form) AND that can be cooled passively seems non-existent. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. I learned that from Tony: Just complain, even be dogmatic about it, in spite of not doing any...

    Affordable graphics cards

For office budget systems, an IGP is great (AMD or Intel). For an upgraded office system I use a 4670 1GB. The 5670 costs me about $15.00 more. For something better than an office system, I start with the 5770 1GB. That's just the way system builds seem to work for me. I miss the silent 8600GT days.

    Anyone Building AMD Systems?

I totally agree . . . you know it's a better system, for less money and with better support. My budget Intel system starts with an i3 530, and I can beat Dell with that too. There is also my high-end dual Xeon system with 24GB of RAM, and it's a good deal too. :)

Yes, screen size is tied to productivity. However, as LM stated, "Too large is just as bad as too small IME." That has been my experience too. It works out that for large companies, the price / size of 19" is a sweet-spot for most users. The 23" is great for some of the power users or...

Yeah, the extra gadgets would be nice, but that motherboard is more than double the cost of what I'm using. I do agree with a bigger monitor. The user experience is always enhanced with more screen real-estate. That's why I bumped it from 19" to 23". At least with a 23" you can view two Word...

You're absolutely right. At that price range, even a low-end DCC workstation user wants bragging rights. So, that is an important part of the purchase. There's also a field of users that are picky about the aesthetics of their computer case, and Li-Lian makes some very nice options.
