RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

    1. I examined the good superblocks to make sure I knew how to recreate the array exactly (i.e. chunk size, etc). 2. I zeroed all the superblocks on all the disks. 3. I recreated the array with the "--assume-clean" option. 4. I marked it possibly dirty with: mdadm --assemble /dev/md0...

RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

One thing I don't understand is why mdadm doesn't just resync the superblocks when I specify "--force" with "--scan". It has the configuration information in mdadm.conf. That's why I put it there so if things went wrong I would be able to restore the array easily. So much for that >:(. Bah!

RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

Attempting to re-add the devices doesn't work: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sda1 mdadm: cannot get array info for /dev/md0 # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdb1 mdadm: cannot get array info for /dev/md0 Annoying. Sorry for the spam-style thread. It helps me think through...

RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

Oh, and I think mdadm --assemble --update=uuid Might be handy. It should update the uuid on the superblocks of the RAID disks. Also: mdadm --assemble --update=resync Is something I'm considering trying after that and before I use the array --if the first command can fix the superblocks.

RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

Another question. If I recreate the array should I use the "--assume-clean" option? That's what I'm leaning towards right now. If I don't will the data be wiped? I'm worried the sync will wipe everything. OTOH, if I do, do I risk corruption because of the crashes? The filesystem was a...

RAID Superblock disappeared from one of my disks after crash. Fix?

My fileserver crashed a couple times lately, and I just noticed that the RAID array didn't come back up the last time. I stored the configuration in /etc/mdadm.conf: # cat /etc/mdadm.conf DEVICE /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/hda1 ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=5...

Good, inexpensive place to by Network Cable & Plugs?

Actually, Handruin, I do want to at least look very seriously at Cat 6. One of the most annoying things about Home Depot for me was that I couldn't compare prices between 5e & 6. They only had 5e. Some of the runs will be pretty long too --like 20m. Robotnik, it turns out has 1000ft 5e for...

Good, inexpensive place to by Network Cable & Plugs?

I'm going to have to make a lot of ethernet cables for the house soon, and I'd prefer to buy a bunch of cable and the plugs in bulk. I checked out Home Depot. It was $75 for 500ft of Cat5e. But the plugs were nearly a dollar each. What I'd really like to do is find a good online distributor...

I have an LX1 as well Adriel, and it's been a terrific camera. The noise sensitivity of the sensor is terrible. I have to keep it <=ISO 100, but if you shoot RAW, noise isn't nearly as much of an issue as people make it out to be. There are excfellent tools for dealing with the problem. I'm...

    December 2006 desktop PC

If you want an 8GB machine Lunarmist, it will be much cheaper to go with AMD. FB-DIMMs are much more expensive than DDR2 right now. Specifically they are at least 2x the price / GB of the DDR2 DIMMs. 2.5x seems to be more common though.

    Dual-Core Opteron Revision "F" on 15 / Aug

4x4 is an attempt by AMD to deal with Intel on the highend now that Conroe is out. Since their architecture scales much more easily to multiple sockets they're saying they're going to release consumer 2-socket systems that use regular (not registered DDR2), in motherboards that aren't crazy...

    Intel strikes back

I mostly agree with you Merc. OTOH it does make a difference for some photography applications. Batch converting RAW files is still a long way from being the instantaneous process I'd like it to be and the X2's could well be noticeably better values than the Core 2 depending on the effects of...

    Intel strikes back

Intel's new chips aren't perfect. Apparently, they lose some functionality in 64-bit mode. Macro-ops fusion has to be shut off with 64-bit instructions. Also the instruction fetch from L1 cannot, in some cases, fetch 4 instructions per cycle in 64-bit mode, rendering Core 2's widened...

    More AMD price cuts

Many can be configured to boot properly. You only need to plug a keyboard & monitor in the one time, and set the old "Halt on no errors" or some such. Most boards I've encountered have it buried in the BIOS somewhere.

Forgot the linky. Lower resolution LCD is the biggest drawback I can see. I don't personally care about that too much though. The battery might be a little worse too which would be unfortunate (it could also be better). The predecessor to the F30 was legendary for its battery life.

3 of 4 new disk bad? Scsi parity errors on 3 SATA disks.

I got new cables. Everything seems to be fine now. The RAID5 array is syncing at over 65MB/s which is quite nice. Shouldn't take nearly as long at this rate. I guess it was going so slow because of the bad cables. Happy times.

I finally had some spare time to do some hardware testing. All the disks are good. So far it's either bad cables or bad motherboard headers. I hope it's the former. The latter would be irritating to say the least... I would not be enthused to be down a server for however many months it'll...

    Zoom lenses

Prime's are just fixed focal length lenses --i.e. they can't zoom. Because they don't zoom at all they're simpler to build, lighter, smaller, and often offer higher quality. Back in the day prime's were significantly superior to zooms in image quality. Advances in lense making have however...

Do nVidia cards still have crappy analog 2D quality?

Do nVidia cards still have crappy analog 2D quality?

By the way, I stuck with Matrox before (had strong deja vu typing this post). The X1800XT is highly recommended on a bunch of sites, but the prices in Canada are still in the stratosphere everywhere that I regularly buy (NCIX & Robotnik). Right up beside the 7950GTX2 low profile jet engine.

I'm looking for a new video card to drive my CRTs. I run them at 1920x1440, so the card needs to have good analog output. I've always used Matrox in the past, but with 2D in most OSes being rendered using the 3D pipelines nowadays, I've realized I'm going to need a decent 3D card one day. I'm...

3 of 4 new disk bad? Scsi parity errors on 3 SATA disks.

It's certainly a bitch. It's worth mentioning that a single-disk rebuild from a failure, is quicker than syncing the whole array which you only have to when you create it. In the future, I'm not even going to bother with anything involving striping. I'm just going to add disks as I need them...
