    My new system

Looks like a fun build. That is a great motherboard. It works so well with different types of systems. You can build a low-end office system with a Sempron 3000 or a high-end system with an FX-62.

A public vote of thanks to Symantec

Customer: But it came in a pretty box, cost lots of money, and is popular! It must be good! Everybody can't be wrong? Me: It let your system get infected, right?

NEWZ: Western Digi "My Book " Pro Edition II

WD has a single drive eSATA drive. Yes, this My Book version has RAID-1 capability. I'll wait until they have this product in production for a while so they can work the bugs out.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

So, I successfully switched my video card from an ATI X1800XL to a Gigabyte nVidia 7600GS. Finally, peace and quiet. However, I can no longer play AOEIII at 1600 x 1200, I'm stuck with 1280 x 1024. :(

What's the latest and greatest in anti spyware?

For me, the combination of NOD32, Adaware, and Spybot take care of most infections. I find Adaware quite useful, as it finds a host of things that Spybot does not, and vice versa. Yet, the first key element is NOD32.

Yes, I have that option available. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-K8VT890-9 (presumably version 1.0), which uses the Realtek ALC850 Audio AC'97 Codec.

    xSATA and SATA 6G news

I was just looking and SIIG has some nice PCI-E 1x slot cards that support a variety of features and interfaces, including eSATA, SATAII, SATAII RAID, and 1394b. That certainly is a nice way to use up that lonely slot on a new motherboard.

Where are all the low power Athlon 64s?

The only readily available AMD processors for me are the Semprons and Opterons. Anything Athlon is about as scarce as Redhill selling WD.

    Act on Server 2003 x64...

No, and their website does not show that x64 is supported. That was my first worry. I checked their FAQ and system requirements -- none mention x64. I suspect that is the issue. Otherwise, SQL shouldn't be a problem. Act! installs its own instance of SQL with the appropriate licenses next to...

Since he's never in the office, just keep it there. You and Kristie will get to enjoy the monitor, the old man will pay for it while he is 1000 kilometers away on some bird expedition, and not even realize what has happened.

My interest in CPU utilization is to see what sub-system is the bottleneck. If CPU utilization is low, even on a dual core system, than some other sub-system is the culprit.

The hardware pick certainly meets your needs. For me, the only drawback would be that everything is MSI. I have come across more motherboard failures from MSI than other brands and I've had some AGP power issues with MSI/nVidia video cards causing stability issues. I certainly hope others...

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

They did this for three generations of 7,200-rpm drives and two generations of 5,400-rpm drives. This all took place in part of 1999 and the beginning of 2000. Then, in 2000, WD released its own, home-grown 7,200-rpm drive with the flagship WD205BA.

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

I use the term "allowed" loosely. WD does not have complete control over Seagate and IBM. Considering their very weak financial position at the start of this century, they had very little choice, but to follow. Nonetheless, they have always had the opportunity to pool their resources and...

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

    Samsung WDC buyout rumor

Indeed. With the Seagate/Maxtor merger, WD had plenty of market share to gain, and did. As a matter of fact they became first inline with some OEMs because Maxtor was removed. Samsung has gained as well.

GM: Best Warranty Coverage Out There

GM will have some interesting technology coming out in 2007 for the Yukon and Tahoe. As a consortium, GM, BMW, and Daimler-Chrysler have developed some nice hybrid technology. Combined with GMs Active Fuel Management system, the Tahoe should use 25% less fuel than the current model. This is...

    More Vista nonsense

That would be funny. Like most versions of Windows, the initial 'gold' release will be sold in the retail market with plenty of flaws. Several months or a year later, SP1 will be released and many of the major issues resolved. Yeah, I would avoid them too.

    For all the Spinpoint fans

If it helps, I'm a SelectWD member. :) So, with the WD1600YD you're looking for a 7200-rpm/16MB cache 1st Gen (WD advertises it as 2nd Gen) SATA drive? With WD's new 17-character model number, it would show up as a WD1600ABKD. But, they're not going to build that model since it would show up...

    For all the Spinpoint fans

400 GB and higher capacity drives are in such demand that my distributors carry very few of them. ;) They aren't even serving up the larger drives from Samsung. The few from WD, Seagate and Hitachi are plenty. The Hitachi ones they don't supply regularly either.
