    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Nice. :) You might also try and inflate the tires with nitrogen, it should give you better mileage or speed... (at least in theory.)

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

It doesn't really matter if you improve five or 1000 roads in a large city, the traffic will increase until the main roads are congested again. It's exactly the same with buses and trains. If you build it, people will eventually travel with it even if there was no initial demand.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Well, it might not happen the same week as the road opens, but it'll change quite fast. There are plenty of studies made about the subject, as jtr1962 mentioned.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Oh I'm sorry, I just took for granted that USA had a growing population and that some people are drawn to large cities... Maybe that's not the case.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The traffic and need for transportation will increase regardless... If you make it easier to take the car -> more people will take their car until the new and improved roads are congested. But if you have an attractive and efficient public transport system as an alternative, people will...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Easy, it's been tried and it always generates more traffic. It would be better to build more efficient public transport systems.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

You didn't actually say it, but it sounds like it would be a big sacrifice to consume less oil. :) But it won't affect the quality of life in a negative way at all if we make a slow transition. It will probably be more negative if we wait until we run out of easily accessible oil.
  9. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

You make it sound like a big sacrifice to reduce oil consumption, but it's not like we need to go back to living in caves and poking ants out of the ground with sticks you know.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Maybe you are confusing nannying with evolution? ;) There are already powerful and quite efficient cars that are fun to drive, like the BMW 535d and Saab 9-5 2.3 BioPower, but they aren't sold in the US (yet).
  11. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Interesting points... But we really don't need 8 cylinder cars even when driving at the autobahn at 250km/h... So I really don't understand why American moms should need one when they're driving to the mall alone? It seems like the author of the article think it's bad to make cars more...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Sorry, but I have to quote this again. It's easy, get the customers interested in the cars. In Sweden we have had different kind of economic rewards if you buy an "environmentally friendly" car. You can get tax-rebates if you have a company car, if you are a private person you get 10000SEK...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I think most manufacturers spend their time to make engines more efficient, bu to get more power out of them. It's sexier to say that new model has 20 hp more than the previous generation, than it is to say that it uses 0.4 litres less fuel per 100km or whatever.
  20. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Carrots are good for consumers, it works great. But the car makers won't be spending millions of dollars on developing these efficient cars unless there are laws that tells them to. It's the same everywhere.

Ok... 2006 Saab 9-5 2.0t BioPower, 150hp with gas, 185hp with ethanol. And did I mention that I drive it 24/7 and use maximum acceleration all the time, just because it's so cheap with ethanol? Just like that wise man Csaba Csere predicted. ;)
  24. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Not if they make good fuel efficient cars... ;) It almost seems like you don't trust the ability of the American car makes.

Best compression program (7-zip, WinZip, etc)

Smith Micro claims that their StuffIt v9.5 can compress JPGs with up to 30%, but I don't know how true it is. By the way, I bought StuffIt v7.5 a few years ago (I really don't remember why.) But it's easy to use and the compression rate is also fine. I don't know if later versions has gotten...

    Something Random

The Subarus are OK in snow. A friend of mine has an old Subaru Pick Up with 13" tyres which he drove around in a field with quite deep snow together with the Swedish military classic Volvo Valp. The military truck got stuck after a while but the Subaru continued to drive around it... :)

What do you think of this roof?

I am sure they are different products in regards to engine and chassis characteristics and so on. But I still wish that GM would make their brands stand out a bit more from each other.
  38. F

What do you think of this roof?

The Saturn Aura is the same car as the Cadillac BLS/Saab 9-3/Opel Vectra and so on... It's not necessarily a bad thing though as I really like the Saab 9-3 (haven't tried the rest.) But it's a little boring that they haven't even bothered to change steering wheels in the new models.

Will Ford make it past this year?

 the Ford Interceptor looks like a crossing between an old Skoda (the front) and some old american car. The biggest problem with american cars are that they stopped the development around 1970, since then they have only been swapping body work to get new models. :mrgrn:
  40. F

Will Ford make it past this year?

I think the reason to why most repair shops are busy is that a car mechanic is rather expensive, so they only hire as many as they need. It would be interesting though to see statistics on how many cars there are per mechanic, and the relation between service/repairs on European/American brands...
  41. F

    BMW 335i

OK, I see. But it shouldn't be a problem finding a shop that can change the final gear ratio, or would you rather only put in a longer 5:gear? I don't know if it would really make a difference in any way though... Your car isn't going to be very quiet in these speeds and I don't think you will...
  42. F

    BMW 335i

A diesel would be perfect for you, but I understand that they aren't very popular in the USA... Anyway, the BMW 530d for example can travel down the Autobahn at 250km/h without breaking a sweat. And under normal circumstances it uses less fuel then their smallest gasoline engine.

    More Vista nonsense

It sounds reasonable that you should be able to install a MSDN version in VMWare, but you never know... Anyway, I found the stuff about the iso here. But I agree, it sounds strange and it's an old page so even if it was a problem it should be fixed by now, unless it's a feature of course.
  45. F

    Well that didn't take long

Or maybe Sechs really meant computer ready Vista? :D I'll wait at least until SP1 before I'll install it (if it'll ever happen.)
  46. F

    More Vista nonsense

Strange, did you try and install from the .iso or did you burn it to a DVD first? I read somewhere that you can only install it from a physical DVD. I haven't tried it myself though so I'm not sure that's the problem.

    Office Chair

Kinnarps might be worth a look if they sell them somewhere in your area. But they're most likely outside of $300. But I've had my (I think it's a 6000-series) for at least 7-8 years now and it's almost like new and I've never sat in a more comfortable office chair.
