Not sure what effect it would have on download speed, but responsiveness could be impacted by the DNS server that you are using. Try using OpenDNS for your DNS server and see if there is any change...

Not necessarily true. These spiral CFLs are totally enclosed to create flood lamps and I have not had one fail on me yet. I have about 15 of them in my basement and they get used a lot and for long periods of time. They're in recessed light fixtures, too...

If you are using Windows, Windows Home Server seems like it might be worth looking into for you. Works great with my desktop and laptop and it's efficient with storage space since only one copy of a file is saved on the server even if there are backups of every machine on your network on it...

Not sure. The Z06 'Vette gets 15mpg City and 24mpg Hwy. With that much power, I'd guess about 20mpg Hwy. With that kind of car, who cares about that. If you have to worry about the mpg, you can't afford it and should not be driving it. :-)

I always planned on keeping the DV tapes. I ended up compressing the uncompressed DV data using TMPGEnc to MPEG-2 at high bit rate for an extra backup burned to DVD as well as kept on the PC. Now that I'm finished doing my friend's videos, I can start on mine. Thanks for your feedback!

I think that's what you get (huge files) with totally uncompressed video even if it is just low res 480P? I will look into other formats. What does Auto Gordian Knot do better than just WMV or some MPG format?

It's is just a standard mini-DV tape camcorder. 480P I guess. I'm not sure of the resolution it records at but I'm 100% sure it isn't HD.
