Many of the larger or tech employers around here have free charging stations in the parking lot. Some of them actually have competition for the spots, and make you go take turns during the day. I'll end up negotiating with the boss about having one installed at my spot. This will be much easier...

The Model S battery packs are water cooled, I suspect that would also work to heat if required. There are videos of the automatically extending door handles punching through thick ice when required, pretty cool.

Mid-tier UPSes these days have SNMP capabilities, that would allow you to log data from the wall at some frequency. This would allow you to aggregate large amounts of data and put together statistics which could compel action.

    Tesla doomed

What a complete pile of crap. There were enough giant assumptions and cherry-picking of facts in the first half that I didn't bother to continue. Assumption 1: As soon as the big three decide to get into the EV game, they will immediately do it better and cheaper. Assumption 2: That gas and...

The AC kicked on here this evening. A combination of 80F+ in the afternoon and me cooking (spicy orange chicken wings and lavender rice with mushrooms). 425F in the oven for 40 minutes puts a lot of heat into the building envelope.

Not that scary, and more my fault. The e-mail they sent asking for payment was a link to Paypal. I'd already paid 50% up front, and the second link stated "remaining balance of $26k+" and never showed a confirmation page. Sure enough, the charge was for the full amount, so I've now overpaid 50%...

I'd like to just state here that PayPal sucks. SolarCity routes all credit card purchases through them, and accidentally overcharged me. The refund from SolarCity was processed, but still hasn't shown on my credit card. I fear that it will eventually show as a PayPal balance instead of a card...

That depends on who is currently running your e-mail. I'm a firm believer that everyone should have their own domain, that way they can keep their e-mail address no matter what and have whomever they like run it for them (among other advantages). Cost is well under $100/year for all of it, setup...

I've already deployed a number of Netgear 10GbE equipment. Specifically the 8 and 12 port versions combined with Intel X540T2. These costs I can handle, but upgrading my perfectly good Synology units to ones with 10GbE was a bridge too far. Synology will serve as backups and can sync all night...

I'm guessing a power issue as well. All my LEDs that are _not_ dimmable have issues and fail early even if I don't have them on a dimmer. The higher-powered outdoor ones I have have actually killed a couple Insteon switches in addition to misbehaving themselves.

Just a follow-up to this. Turns out EC2 can give you pretty respectable GPU machines, and the program I'm using is OpenCL accelerated. What took 46 hours with CPUs will take 6 with GPUs. Specs for the machine: [/LIST] The big one is still less than $3/hr.

Running only 20MP from a FF sensor is one way to get good low-light performance. It also lets you get high FPS numbers. I'm most impressed by the 4k@60FPS video mode; last I checked that was a RED thing (or GoPro, but you know what I mean).
