SSDs - State of the Product?

Indeed. I suspect it has to do with the size of the part compared to power consumption and how isolated it is from the rest of the motherboard. When those same chips are mounted to a 2.5" drive it isn't as big a deal.

Yup. I've had exactly one HOA, and they had my car towed from in front of my house twice, cited me for installing a hot tub in my backyard, and prevented me from installing double-pane windows to replace the ancient aluminum ones.

I suspect he is simply omitting a step titled "go to court, win right to modify contract" in between "remove protections" and "further modify contract". I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing ends up in court several times. Contracts that prevent use of the legal system are very often...

SSDs - State of the Product?

FLIR One, not that expensive. ($250) Easy work justification. AC in server room wasn't keeping up, and the thermostat was giving poor readings. Turned out to be an air circulation issue. Also good for identifying hot spots in computers for instability or failing components. For example, the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Just a warning for anyone looking to run M.2 SSDs, they get hot and will thermally throttle if you don't cool them. I even went so far as to use thermal epoxy to attach large heatsinks to mine, and the base of the drives is still the second hottest thing in the computer.

    Why are chargers so lame?

I don't know of any way to measure capacity or (by extension) power draw or charge rate. I'm sure there are industrial-level tools for that, but I know of nothing in the consumer space.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

If disk backups are failing, you need to pull them. I might try to pull these, erase them every way you can think of, and then restore back. Or just replace them and hold onto these for a less critical project in the future.

RED is too much for me, even just a week rental would be thousands. 5DsR and a 35/1.4II? Not sure the 17-40/4 will be sharp enough, but the 24/1.4 should be, no? And the 100-400II should be fine as well?

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

Speed might be ok but the bandwidth would be too expensive for the security camera streams. Razzolink is a local wireless ISP that I have a really good relationship with. They have 500Mbps+ of internet at the top of a local hill and would let me buy some. I've attached images of both runs for...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

Yup, using Ubiquiti gear. The relay down into the quarry will be a sector antenna, probably one of these, to feed the different facilities (gatehouse, scales, processing, haul trucks, etc). I'm currently evaluating different options to get data in there. Ideally it would be a direct feed from...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

This one isn't for the back yard. I need to relay a wireless signal into a canyon we're going to start mining. Most open mines are built into the back side of hills so you can't see them from the main valley, this makes line of sight from our other facilities difficult. I've had a plastic garden...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

I'm going with a deep-cycle lead for my current project. The draw and charge are going to be slow enough compared to the capacity of the pack, and the weight and size of the box will be mostly irrelevant. Well, it will matter to a few people on the day they deploy it, but I'm going to be...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

Each of the cells is individually fused, so that helps. Metal box is a good idea. Clear of the house is a better idea. I'm currently putting together a garden shed with solar panels, battery array, and inverter for off-grid use. We'll see how it does.

    Booting from GPT disk

Installing OSes on drives with data scares me quite a bit. In fact, installing OSes on drives with an existing partition structure isn't something I've done in years. If there is space on the SSD that already has 7, I'd disconnect your data drives and install 10 alongside 7 if it lets you...

Type-C is the new regular socket. You will live long enough to have to make at least one more switch. This is also the first new connector of all the ones you listed that has an actual advantage; it is fully reversible. It can also handle more power and faster data while in theory being more...

Backing up and restoring is better in all ways except that you need to have 200%+ your array capacity online at the same time. Also, when 1GbE was the thing an array backup and restore would have taken longer.
