    UnRAID Server Build

For those concerned about the performance of their virtualized workstations. The reason I'm not putting my own workstation in the same machine is that unRAID won't support SLI, and I think I'll want that when the Oculus arrives. https://youtu.be/FvcxPufSRNo

Google Apps Unlimited supports unlimited mailbox size. And (thanks to the web interface) this won't cause performance issues.

I want to buy a new car

I'm still in the high-700s because I both don't have enough lines of credit (3) and the lines of credit are too young (avg. 3.5 years, oldest 6 years). Without any large purchases coming up soon, I'm tempted to bite the bullet now and get some additional lines of credit immediately and then let...

One computer can't ping another, but the problem is one-way

Yup. When working with most vendor application issues, the step after "reboot" is "disable firewall and see if it works".

This, but make sure you send an e-mail in advance warning of the problem and requesting the resources. When the resources are denied (notice I didn't say "if"), then you will be appreciated after fixing it while having your ass covered. Why do you think all the US intel agencies post so many...

    Proposed NAS build

I found variable fan speeds more annoying than fixed. I ended up setting the fans to the highest speed that wasn't audible and then added heatsinks and ducting to cool any hot spots.

HAMR or Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording. 100 TB HDD by 2025.

With tiny parts of the platter being randomly heated to 500C I would fear for the integrity of the platter itself. Motors, bearings, and arms are things that I feel are pretty solid tech at the moment.

    UnRAID Server Build

Currently I'm running a dedicated firewall without WiFi and running a pair of Ubiquiti AC Lite access points in the house. The firewall is fast (not willing to compromise my 150Mbps+ connection), but power hungry. Can't remember the name, but we've discussed it before and it is a 1U chassis with...

    UnRAID Server Build

    UnRAID Server Build

After watching some videos on YouTube demonstrating VMs with direct exposed hardware while wanting a NAS with 10GbE and SSD file caching, I decided to start a build similar to that in the videos (links at bottom of post). UnRAID will do a bunch of things, the things I'm interested in at the...

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

Sorry, should have been more specific. One thing Microsoft is really good at is taking your money and fixing issues with their own products. Not sure whether your company has a larger service agreement with MS, but even the pay-per-issue support is excellent. As you mentioned in the OP, this...

Yup, that is a problem. The last time I was dealing with Exchange I had a mailbox corrupt itself before reaching the official limit, ended up having MS deal with it. They saw the mailbox size (smaller than yours) and admonished me. When I mentioned that I was under the limit they said it was...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

Indeed. It seems that Lead-acid or flooded batteries are the better option. And as always, having more capacity is good for a bunch of reasons. 1. Charge/discharge rate per battery is lower for any power level 2. Charge level is easier to maintain away from extremes (batteries don't like being...

    Old Thinkpad, new activation wrinkle

What I find interesting about that is whether the codes have always been able to be used repeatedly (never tried), or that they are now handing out special codes that can be used repeatedly. If the latter, that means that they had planned for this since the beginning.

There are better keyboards out there. It also depends on whether the company that makes your product decided to replace the stock keyboard (which normally has an enter key on it) with one of their own.

    question Truecrypt

Truecrypt does support a mode where you could plausibly deny there was any hidden data at all. I'm grateful I don't need to worry about that one. Nope. 7.1a is the same as 7.1a. The assumption was that you didn't have it installed and that is why you were asking. It you already have TC 7.1a, there is no reason to believe that any other product out there is more secure.

Haven't used eBay in ages. Every once in a while I'm tempted, then someone posts something like this. Occasionally I'll take my chances with with someone who isn't at least "fulfilled by Amazon" on their platform, but that is as risky as I'll get.
