    Intel Skylake reviews (i7-6700K)

Thinking of it as a percentage is probably best. 5-10% of income for all toys/hobbies is a pretty comfortable place to be, but I recognize that this is easier at higher income levels. My first few computers were acquired by dumpster-diving outside UC Berkeley.

We have been upgraded by comcast to Blast 150mbps I think...

Pretty much. I was thinking of running it like a local dropbox, or just using it as a backup target. Maybe running a Mumble server?

I want to buy a new car

Front-end damage can look much worse than it is (or the other way). I don't think it would be that tricky to find someone who can give you a list of the parts that need replacing and compare that cost to a replacement vehicle. It is unlikely that you'll find a similar car with the rest of it so...

No idea. Just staying off everyone's radar. 5Gig/day?

    Something Random

I've been evaluating solar for the house, and one of the thoughts I had was to pull some of the DC off to drive DC things before converting the rest. From the technologies that are most cost effective at the moment, micro-inverters seem to be a leader. This of course eliminates any DC bus from...

We have been upgraded by comcast to Blast 150mbps I think...

I have the opportunity to hang a small machine directly off a 10Gb link at a carrier hotel. Can't be big, can't be loud, and can't be power hungry. Also can't abuse it too much. No idea what I would use it for.

    Overclocking Fun

I'll take a little pride that all the machines that scored higher than mine had 3x Titan X and got just a few more points. That makes mine clearly the best bang/buck! ;)

    Overclocking Fun

Looking at the new Intel CPUs and not getting one motivated me to see how far I could overclock "Home1" CPU @ 127x36 = 4.572Ghz GPUs @ 1380 / 3960 RAM @ 2666Mhz

For the record, I had a Win10 upgrade fail earlier that was resolved by uninstalling Daemon Tools. Not surprising, just a heads-up.

    Intel Skylake reviews (i7-6700K)

Because they are low or high? I'm used to top-end components breaking down as follows: $1k CPU $500 RAM $500 MB $500 HDD (SSD) $1k GPU (x2?) Not that anyone needs that system, but a top-end CPU for $350 is pretty darn reasonable.

I want to buy a new car

That sucks Merc. Have you considered buying the car back from insurance and having the repairs done? With the rest of the car in such good shape, the value might be there.

    Intel Skylake reviews (i7-6700K)

i7-6700K supplies seem to be very tight; the only seller listed on Amazon wants $550 at the moment. I can wait.

I have some here. It is vile, but it isn't the lack of taste, it is the texture. No idea how you would hide that grainyness. Also, it needs to sit in the fridge for hours, but can't stay for weeks. Too much effort.

    Intel Skylake reviews (i7-6700K)

Sounds about right. Considering how many of my common loads are effectively bottle-necked on a single core, I would totally give up parallelism for a pair of faster cores (4.5Ghz? 4.8? $500?)

    Intel Skylake reviews (i7-6700K)

So their $350 chip natively goes to 4.2Ghz, when do we expect the faster iterations to arrive?

Did the in-place upgrade using the media creation toolkit on my main rig (Home1). After the download, it took about 45 minutes to complete. Classic Shell complained a bit on restart, I should have uninstalled it before the upgrade (I did right after). Needed to download and install the new...

There is no point to that machine. I suppose if you wanted to drive 5 4k monitors in games you might need it. And I consider all chassis to be ugly; either exposed circuitry or hide it in another room.

I want to buy a new car

For the most part I buy cars like computer parts. I wait until I need one, then I buy the best out at that moment. The improvements are (typically) incremental enough that it isn't worth worrying about.

I want to buy a new car

I think it's one of those things where if you were really particular you'd already know which one you want. Since that isn't the case, just start with the size of car and amount of money before looking at wirecutter and picking the one that suits you.

I want to buy a new car

The pedestrian safety standards are forcing the bumper and front of the hood up on most cars. The higher beltline (side windows that don't start until your shoulders) certainly feels restrictive, but I don't think it actually effects visibility that much. I know I don't have eyes in my shoulders.

    1. Only if you have contacts that you don't actually trust. 2. Only if you have passwords saved on your computer. I don't see Lunar being effected by either of these.

I want to buy a new car

Better and worse I think. The cars are better by most standards; more reliable, more efficient, more powerful. But not making gains as quickly as the technology we are used to. Still gains.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

For me it was the repetitive nature of gameplay. Limited number of maps means that you aren't exploring after a couple days, this is exacerbated by how fast the rounds are. World of Warships has the same issues. I'm sure that being part of a group with voice comms would make it much more fun. I...
