    Something Random

Once upon a time a client decided to thank (a quite young) me by having a subscription to Playboy sent to my 1099 address. What they didn't know is that I was couch surfing in San Francisco and had put my parents address down. Never heard a thing. You're welcome, dad. ;)

    Some work on my A3

To elaborate, the new wheels were nearly half the weight of the stock S-line 18" my car came with. This and the better brakes dropped rotational mass probably 30% and unsprung mass around 15%.

    Some work on my A3

My wheel is still in production, albeit a newer revision. It seems they use the number to keep track of all the variables offered (diameter, width, offset, dish, bolt-pattern, finish, color). There are apparently three finishes for my color (gunmetal) and three stages of dish for my ET48 offset...

Youtube performance issue in SLI system

KSP is capable of bringing this entire rig to a crawl in many ways (single-core, multi-core, GPU) depending on how I am abusing it. Increasing the resolution of the physics model (single core), docking craft or running kOS (programmable autopilot) for multi-core, and the occasional failure...

Youtube performance issue in SLI system

I pretty much always have a game in the background. Usually Kerbal Space Program. Disabling SLI requires killing 8-10 processes (Adobe, Firefox, games). That would be sub-optimal.

Youtube performance issue in SLI system

In one of those colossally first world problems, my dual Titan X rig sucks at Youtube playback. Audio (toslink) is flawless and it loads quickly enough, but there is significant screen tearing and frame dropping going on. Playback at 4k is fine, but anything less is awful. Does anyone know if...

Just checked and none of my recent machines have PS/2 ports, but I use them a lot in POS (cash register) systems as many credit card readers still use them.

Oh, and the crack formed from the inside lip of the rim itself. It is quite large at the edge, but only a tiny bit of the crack is actually inside the pressurized portion. I suspect that the crack has slowly grown since the last significant impact nearly 2 years ago.

They are happy to replace the wheel at my cost. ;) Once I place the order the build time is 6-8 weeks. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time correctly identifying the wheel. The company I originally purchased from never actually included the Forgestar unique ID for the wheels, nor is their...

    Some work on my A3

Cracked one of the Forgestar F14 wheels bad enough to cause a slow leak. Honestly don't remember doing anything too crazy in the last week, nothing really wheel-threatening in the last 18 months. Just sent them an e-mail asking how quickly I can get a replacement.

From what I understand, the nature of how AMD divides the load means there is less data between the cards. Therefore no bottleneck. Of course, performance can't be directly compared as no single type of card can use both technologies.

Nope. Normally ship with the board, but I don't keep all that stuff most of the time. Next time I go by my office I'll go through the parts boxes and find one.

The Titan Xs arrived, but no SLI bridge to be found. One point for ATI for not requiring a bridge of any kind.

    Windows 8.1

At least for Windows 8 there is a non-obvious way to run it with a local account (the same as previous versions). Once it is set during the install it behaves exactly as you would expect. By default, they make you set up a "Live" account tied to your e-mail. I find this offensive, it makes me...

If you want a flat tax with a progressive effect that is easy to calculate, make it a wealth tax. Bottom 20% won't pay anything (due to negative net worth), top 20% responsible for 50%+. Want to lower your tax burden? Put that money back into the economy.

It is safe to assume that full functionality on Google services will always be available on a PC. PCs aren't that much more than an STB. The pain of dealing with an STB is not worth it.

Last year just for grins I tried doing my own taxes before sending the paperwork to my accountant. He saved me at least double his fees compared to my math. For those with larger amounts of money on the line, you might consider a particularly good accountant a reasonable investment.

    Cheap Power Supply

I would love to have an answer to this as well. In situations where reliability is critical and some component has a wall wart, I've been known to put in mid-range scientific power supplies.

I believed you, one of the reasons I bought it. ;) Now I can sell my 100/2 and the Sigma 150-500. I'm building out a carry-on sized pelican case for smaller projects and a checked-luggage one for larger projects (bigger tripod, lighting, video/audio stuff, etc). Based on my current inventory...

100-400II is amazing (particularly on a crop body) even with the 2x extender on it. Moderate indoor lighting is still enough to hand hold 400x2 f11 @ 16000 ISO and get a usable image. Amazing image stabilization.

In either case the cable is not the majority of the cost. Patch panels and keystones can cost that much, and the labor (if contracted out) will likely be more than that by a good margin.

Not multiple humans, just viewed from further away. The 32" is close enough that the only room on the desk in front of it is the keyboard. If I had something in the 40"@5k range I could move it to the back of the desk and have more work space.

A look at proper ceiling insulation for central CA. 1/2" sheetrock, 3" of spray foam adhered directly to the rock/joists/cans/ducts, topped by 9" of fiberglass. The foam added to the rigidity enough to provide significant soundproofing as well.
