This makes me glad that I'm not an AT&T customer

Comcast in my neighborhood runs on poles behind the property. The coax comes directly from the pole to the attic in the back of the house. The speed a cable modem can achieve is limited by the signal to noise ratio on the line, normal installations that include hundreds of feet of cable...

This makes me glad that I'm not an AT&T customer

First thing I did when I got my Comcast service was swap in my own internet-only modem, connected directly to the wire flying in from the pole to optimize SNR.

    Something Random

My current plans for our next house (when the kid moves out) is just under 1,000 square feet without any compromises to quality of life. Of course, that doesn't include the 1,500 sq.ft. for garage/shop/off-grid utilities, but that is low-cost space.

This makes me glad that I'm not an AT&T customer

This made me pause for a moment. They do rent modems with integrated router/wifi, so technically they are on your LAN. Has anyone checked if their TOS lets them sniff around there?

Not sure what you mean by "repeatable"? The camera seems fine after a day of playing with it, but my standards are clearly lower. Perhaps the 7DII shipping today already have the fix you alluded to? As for why I got another Canon, I don't intend to run two systems or sell/purchase all my...

This makes me glad that I'm not an AT&T customer

Shame I didn't read that an hour ago, I had a salesman from AT&T come to the door mentioning they just put fiber into the neighborhood. Would love to know what the corporate line about that is. Of course, my ISP (Comcast) has their own issues.

Nvidia's Titan X is coming soon.

Titan X arriving April 10. Not sure whether I'll keep it or sell it in a gaming rig, but availability is likely still going to be tricky. Might be some margin there.

    dSLR thread

24/1.4 has been my favorite lens for nearly a year. Easy to compose and easy to make pretty pictures. One of the big reasons for going from the 7D to the 7DII was the faster and more accurate autofocus. The hit rate @ f1.4 has at least doubled.

Yup, sometimes Amazon is just better. Ordered my 7DII Wednesday afternoon. On the table charging now. The 100-400 II won't arrive til the middle of next week, though.

    Cruise ship with kid?

Carnival doesn't have the best reputation, but they are also a victim of statistics. They are so much larger than everyone else, and run more ships and more passengers, that statistically it is significantly more likely that something bad happen on one of their ships. That being said, I wouldn't...

From all the research, Royal Caribbean seemed the no-brainer best. With the best ships out there (Quantum Class). Unfortunately, their presence on the west coast isn't as strong.

    Cruise ship with kid?

First company I looked at was Disney. Unfortunately, they don't have a cruise we are interested in at the time window we have. And as a plus to us, Carnival offers free unlimited daycare to kids over 2 whether they are potty-trained or not. With Disney, that only applies to 3+ and potty-trained...

    Cruise ship with kid?

The reason I haven't taken a vacation in so many years is that there isn't an acceptable contingency plan for me not being at work. I currently have someone part-time, but they aren't up to speed on all the services (and likely won't be by August). I'll need to have my phone with me and be able...

    Cruise ship with kid?

I've basically spent the day doing research. Several cruise lines offer services that will make this much more practical. The Carnival Cruise ship Carnival Miracle does a 7-night trip out of LA with a couple stops in Mexico. Direct flights to LAX leave MRY (12 minutes from our house) every...

    Cruise ship with kid?

My wife wants to take a vacation. I've held off this long, but it has been 7 years, so she isn't exactly being unreasonable. Traveling with a little kid (soon to be 2) has its own layers of difficulty and logistics, so I thought a cruise from a nearby port would be ideal. 1. No need to fly...

Nvidia's Titan X is coming soon.

Nope. Frankly, I'd consider them my competition on that end of the market. I just sell Lenovos to most of my customers, but on the really high-end I still build myself. My markup is roughly in-line with them, but their fit and finish looks quite impressive (provided their customer units look...

The 4-way video is just porn with no numbers, the 3-way shows an appreciable difference between 2 and 3 cards. Having those guys build the system I want would be about $11k; only ~$1500 in markup.
