I'm fairly certain it is just a BIOS revision issue. Once I get the original CPU freed up (3970X) I'll see if I can get the Gigabyte board to boot.

Interesting. At the moment I just use the Strava app on my phone in my back pocket. No display in front of me at all. The one thing I would like to have is instantaneous speed; when you are in a paceline it is bad form to deviate from the agreed upon speed as you take over the front position...

Nope. Got the 4960X running in the ASUS for now. Planning on flashing the BIOS on the board I use at home (just noticed it is another ASUS P9X79) and swap it with the Gigabyte board at work. Then I will have three bootable systems for my 3 CPUs. Gah.

I started a bit of a row with some friends when I said that medicine is a subset of biology which is a subset of chemistry which is a subset of physics. I didn't think there would be a dispute on this, and no-one was able to provide a different starting place. Thoughts?

My wife recently went back to work, and I can promise you she had a much easier time at home with the kid. Is being a stay-at-home parent 100% vacation? Nope, but if it is as draining as working a full-time job you're doing it wrong. The days that I take off to spend with the kid (about once a...

We've often talked about how awesome Amazon is, and how they offer just about anything. I'm looking for a copper pipe fitting, specifically a tee where the straight-through bit is 1" and the tee bit is 3/4". This is a very common part, but I can't seem to find the bugger. Even the way more rare...

I'd forgotten how infuriating Lightroom is. There should always always always be an "open" and a "save" option in the "File" menu. Just took me 15 minutes to open a CR2 file from a CF card, make basic changes, and save it. Gah.

I completely believe what Merc has posted above, but I've run Vertex drives in RAID10 off 3Ware controllers without performance penalty; in fact it was pretty darn quick. Haven't done anything like that in a long time, the drives are big enough now that I don't bother. What sort of total...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Interesting. I'm assuming some fancy device driver or some such would be needed to present this to the OS as storage. It almost sounds fast enough to use as actual non-volatile RAM in a system for instant boot-up or the ultimate in power savings.

    Privacy browser?

I'd agree that this is where the concern is greatest. I haven't looked into VPN connections from a mobile device, but that would be the only way I can think of. i7-4960X / Socket 2011 issues

Thanks Bozo, I've seen that list. The only things on it say "F4", and it includes the 4960X and the 3820. This makes me think that the board I have is running some BIOS older than F4, and it has no listing of which CPUs were supported on F3, F2, or F1. Looks like I should take apart my home...

Swapping the PSU with a NIB Corsair HX750 didn't do it, but I did get it to boot with the 3820 in the P9X79 Pro and have confirmed.....BIOS rev 4005  Grr. So, what is the most brain-dead, oldest 2011 CPU that is guaranteed to work in that fracking Gigabyte board regardless of revision?

    A bunch. The ones I use the most are the 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 17-40/4, 180 macro, and occasionally the 100/2. I have a 10-22, Sigma 75-500, 18-55 IS, and the pancake 40/2.8. i7-4960X / Socket 2011 issues

I've tried it with both the RAM and GPU in and out. From what I've been able to tell, F4 was the earliest shipping BIOS for the Gigabyte, and the ASUS shipped last Friday so should have a fairly recent BIOS. Of course I haven't been able to confirm either.

I've clearly lost my touch with these things. Originally I ordered a Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 and an Intel i7-4960X. System would power cycle at 1 second intervals forever. Suspected that the board didn't support the new i7 out of the box, I bought an i7-3820 CPU and an ASUS P9X79 Pro motherboard...

So if it is a valve cleaning it seems that requires a shop and about $800. Coilpacks are about $90.
