    dSLR thread

I've been authorized to spend some money on camera gear for better baby pictures. At the moment I'm using the 17-40 @f4 most of the time, and the 50/1.4 when I can stand that far away and want a narrower DOF. I'm debating between the 35/1.4 and the 24/1.4. I used to have a 35/2, but I can't even...

Windows 8 with Start8 or the free Classic Start is my preferred OS at the moment. Faster than 7 (or maybe even XP), supporting all the latest stuff, and I can pretend Metro never existed.

The Windows8 UI was a turd. 8.1 does not change that, but adds some bling that would be neat, were it not on a turd.

If you don't mind dropping some coin and just want it to work all the time, I use gotomypc.com. No firewall configuration, no silly dyndns stuff, decently quick, no software needed on the machine you use to connect.

I've been watching the whole series for weeks now, and even got to see them practicing in person in SF. Awesome boats. The main "sail" is actually a rigid carbon-fiber wing 130'+ tall (larger than the wing on a 747). The whole boat is basically 7 tons of carbon on the verge of self-destruction...

I'm liking the Corsair AXxxxi line. The fan doesn't even turn on below about 50% of its rated load. Fully modular. Nice cable lengths. Available in 1200W. Darn expensive.

Interesting. I use Notepad more than all of Office and Google Apps combined. Great target for copy/paste procedures because it strips all formatting. Loads very fast so no waiting. Every computer has it so I can launch it very quickly.

This I agree with, the rest I find unlikely and a bit distasteful. I do believe in more of a raw capitalist system, because I believe humans need scarcity to thrive. I have no idea what this looks like. What I suspect will happen is not much. The people making decisions are content with the way...

I occasionally think about automation and the replacement of jobs with computers/robots/tech. If I look into the jobs around me, there aren't many that won't be able to be automated sooner or later. The only job I see as secure is managing the automated systems. And of course as the automation...

Yup. Those are my users. I'm fairly certain that there will be (already is?) a massive divide in the success of individuals who can "use a computer" (by his definition) vs. those who can't. I, like many here, pride myself in knowing how to do stuff. Some skills are over-valued and some not...

It doesn't specify, but my guess is that these numbers include acceleration of some kind, otherwise the mass wouldn't be a factor beyond rolling resistance (which is already separately specified). Thanks for the data though, that is interesting.

    Some work on my A3

Thanks all for the replies, I'd agree that the rim (if functionally damaged) should be replaced. I suppose I'll have a better look at it when I have the tires swapped. My regular tire shop has all the equipment to handle this, so we'll see what they have to say. Agreed that the tire is a risk...

I'm looking at doing something unconventional with a gaming machine, but it is dependent on being able to make a very flat PC with a top-end gaming card. Carbon Dioxide into rock.

I'm sure it takes energy, but at least that energy can come from anywhere at any time. This would make sense if we were capturing the CO2 from a source that is difficult to replace with a clean alternative (aircraft) and converting to solid using a power source that is easy to make green (hydro).

Indeed. But even in that segment they are rocking the competition. The Model S Performance has out-dragged a BMW M5 and has put up very respectable figures to other cars in the luxury ~$100k segment (3.9 to 60mph, 1/4 mile in 12.4) while competing comfortably with the S-Class or A7 on the comfy...
