    Flaky network

Nope, no documentation here. That was the first of my projects to be cut. When the job grew to the point that projects weren't making deadlines, I began to maintain a list of outstanding issues and projects with an importance scale of 0-9 that the boss maintains. When I feel it is worth the...

In theory you are 100% correct. But one night of troubleshooting every 7 years is worth not having to deal with that crap the rest of the time, IMO.

    Flaky network

Yup. Having two incompatible networks in close proximity is a risk, but I had made troubleshooting easy by using only blue patch cables for data and white for voice, with red for uplinks to other switches. Of course, when I got in when he was done they were all over the place and included...

    55" TVs

I'm pretty much buying Samsung TVs exclusively at this point. Not the best picture quality, and not the best price, but out of two dozen so far not one has gone wrong. I can't say the same for LG or Panasonic.

    Flaky network

Finally got through the wireshark traces, and I'm pretty sure I've found the problem. Looks like the phone vendor put in several bridges between his network (VoIP, restricted to specific ports in this building, managed by him) and my network. He has a Linksys router handling DHCP for all the...

    Flaky network

Mixed switches, and a completely open topology. Traffic can freely broadcast across the whole system including wireless WAN links, fiber connections, etc. Going against some best practices, sure, but it worked flawlessly until this morning when all hell broke loose. This started at the same...

    Flaky network

This one is killing me. My network has ~600 devices across 5 sites. Everything works some of the time but nothing works all of the time. Sometimes the speed is fine and sometimes it takes minutes. Any network communication is effected; to your network printer, network shares, RDP sessions, even...

    Something Random

I don't think the size of the company matters, just where you are in it. I've been in various companies at various levels, and once you are high enough up the ladder to have regular dialogs with the boss and be part of the decision making process things seem to make a lot more sense. Or they...

That would depend on how desperate the situation is. If things are truly going down the toilet than anything "now" might be the best bet. Then again, while $30k isn't chump change for a company of that size, it isn't that big a deal, either. Also keep in mind that companies these days are...

    Cycling

I went for a practice ride/race on Tuesday night with the team. On the downhill the bike was feeling a bit wobbly so I took it in for service. The frame is broken in three places; both the chain- and seatstays on the drive side and the chainstay on the left are cracked. I'm awaiting word...

New inexpensive build - how did I do?

That looks pretty good to me. But I don't know the current state of AMD stuff. Using a larger case if it still fits the location is always preferable. It can be quieter and run cooler than smaller cases. If this machine has a lower power draw, you may be able to dial down the fans a bit. Not...

Thanks for checking my math, I think I multiplied it twice. If it is 240 pixels per 5m, than a full 1080 pixel high screen would be 22.5m (73.8ft) high and about 40m (131.2ft) wide. And waterproof. And (relatively) low-power. And flexible. That would be pretty awesome. Some more questionable...

Pretty cool. So to get a wall 5mx5m would cost $26,680 and have a resolution of 3600x3600@60hz Don't have time to do the math on size and cost of a full 1080P (1920x1080) screen of them, but that would be pretty awesome.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I'm playing it as a sandbox game. I have no interest in playing with people I don't know. The city size restriction can be annoying, but the regional nature allows you to work around many of the limitations (you can run 14 cities in a region and exchange power, police, resources, etc between...

Honestly? It is a pretty fun game, and a bigger timesink than Civ5. Haven't had any errors in the last two days. Of course, you shouldn't buy it. No one should be rewarded for such craptacular DRM-sodden errors. But I've been playing the crap out of it.

Server farm aberrations : is it normal?

If you want to keep the WAN connections on two dedicated hardware machines, look for a system that will get two low-end servers in a 1U chassis. Anything will do. But I would be comfortable using the vLAN technique you mentioned, just be sure that vLAN tags are stripped both ways somewhere...

I can relate. I take my car out to our quarry probably once a month for some fun. Really hard-packed earth with 1/2" of dust on top; super-slick when the water trucks aren't running. I've been able to balance it with full opposite lock on throttle, but the exit is still darn scary.

I agree with all above that it would likely turn out to be a tiny amount of money, and would likely not even be worth collecting. But to be fair we are using the infrastructure, and should be billed out portion. $2 a tire or thereabouts would be my guess.

Finding some way to get bicycles to contribute to the infrastructure they use makes sense, all other things being equal. But they aren't. Actually, they use a metal pole connected by wire to the helicopter. As they approach, the connect the helicopter to the pole electrically. That way they have the same potential and you can move freely between them. Since the heli isn't grounded, the electricity doesn't go anywhere. It does make...

Acronis TrueImage 2013 to backup VMWare Workstation live?

I am pulling a copy of the SQL database while dismounted from time to time. That seems to be the only way to get a copy that our vendor's app doesn't complain about. I can snapshot them, but I was hoping not to have to. The computer is powerful enough that there shouldn't be any appreciable queue lengths, but I see your point. Can you think of an easy way to test for minor data corruption/loss issues? The biggest concern would be the SQL 2008 server.

    Wireless USB 3.0?

I've used USB3.0 active extensions before to 30'+, so any conduit would do. If there was some hardcore fiber adapter that would be perfect. Right now there is no conduit to the table at all; just cables along the floor. This isn't OK at a law office apparently.
