Last week I had to photoshop-edit 40+ pages of PDFs. Font-matching, updating tables, graphs. What a pain in the ass. The user typed it up, printed it, didn't save it, then scanned it to PDF using the copier. As a lesson, I made them stand there and watch as I made the changes and berated them...

And my take on things that make me most safe while riding are as follows: 1. Be visible: Lights, bright colors, whatever. Riding in a group helps considerably. 2. Be predictable: I do use hand gestures, but not the official ones. I make eye contact with the car I'm concerned about and point...

Must say I've never noticed an impairment from the helmet. In fact, I forgot my helmet once and went 5 miles before meeting up with a friend and he mentioned it. Of course, I'm running a pretty good helmet (Kask somethingorother, $500+, the part with the sticker is still on the side of the...

It has just been too hot in my office lately. When I'm there I need to stop it because it is too hot. And when I'm not there it crashes after about 6 hours because of the heat. As we pass into Summer and the AC units go online it won't be an issue, but at the moment the only time air circulates...

Managed to get cleaned up from the bike crash in time to make it to a "casino night" fundraiser for a local school. Managed to convert 1,000 into 75,000 in 4 hours of Blackjack. Not my favorite game, but there wasn't a hold-em table set up.

Before the crash ~10% of my teeth were not fully functional, now it's more like 13%. Not a big deal. And this is my first crash in nearly 2000 miles of riding, which I suppose I should be happy with. No medical bills other than a couple hundred dollars in bandages, tape, gauze, antibiotic...

Had a bit of a crash this morning. Paceline at 29.8MPH, I was second wheel. Guy in front did a minor brake check and I crossed up with him. Shattered the back of my helmet, bashed my hip pretty good, chipped a few teeth, and lost a lot of skin (shredded the shirt). Glad my car key and S3 are...

Law office. Complex conference room setup. The assistants who do the argument prep are on the conference table and often need to scan in/read stuff from disks. Cheapest way to combine 18 Linux servers into one (or two)

IIRC, the limitations on the free version of ESXi were on CPU sockets. I think two is allowed, and as many VMs as you want to put on there is fine. With this approach, you can just do a Physical->Virtual conversion and move all 18 as-is onto a single machine.

    Wireless USB 3.0?

I have a need for high/ultramega-speed USB3.0 to a place without conduit. Installing a conduit would cost thousands, but I have the OK as a worst-case. Anyone have a better solution? There will be a switch with several devices hanging off it (optical drive, scanner, key, mouse). The budget is...

Yup. But there is a transparency issue here. You should be able to charge whatever you want, but you shouldn't be able to charge more after-the-fact. The only way they get away with it is calling it a fee.

BSOD - Directory Services could not start

Unless your enterprise is massive, you don't need to worry about an IO bottleneck. I've run 500 person AD servers with every FSMO role from a 7200RPM SATA drive.

Both of these. If you can't just do a re-install and re-enter the data easily, call MS. And watch the guy who remotes into your system do all kinds of command line magic. I've been on AD-related calls that took 16 hours+, but in the end all was well and it was still just the fixed fee ($300...

That sounds completely plausible. I'm sure that a MS guru could get it working without a reinstall, but I'm not one. I'd be doing a re-install. Was there a reason the OS wasn't on the array as well?

Server farm aberrations : is it normal?

I had vSphere. Still have the licenses, though I let the support lapse. The main reason is damage control. When something goes really wrong in vSphere, I'm in a command line world I have very little experience in. With Workstation I know my way around and can deal with OS issues without stress...

Server farm aberrations : is it normal?

The main advantage I find to running a light system is that I can upgrade/swap out very frequently and still be well within any reasonable budget. Mubs is right. What you are facing is a political problem. That it can persist despite all the money it is costing is a sign that the forces involved are too strong to fight. Here would be my recommendation: Identify clusters of servers that will be EOL'd at about the same time. Proactively...
