I have no problems with increasing penalties for illegal gun posession. However it seems that even now, criminal possesion of a firearm is dealt with by a slap on the wrists by the Courts/Prosecutors. Let's enforce already existing laws, instead of just putting more on the books to make the...

    WinXP 64-bit SP2 Released (+64bit Win2K3 Srvr)

Installed a Sun v490 into a rack today. Four Sparc processors, 32 * 1GB DIMMS. Quite a staggering dollar value, but I guess they want high density. Solaris being the OS of choice in this instance.

A semi-auto fires one round for each press of the trigger. A double-action revolver has the same effect. There are tens if not hundreds of millions of such semi-auto guns in the USA. If someone breaks into my house whilst I or my family are inside, they can expect a swift response from a 12...

True, the Zipcar only makes sense if you are ducking out for a couple of hours, for an extended trip then a normal rental place is better.

You may want to look at Zipcar if there's one parked around where you live. Seems very affordable, given you only pay when you use it, insurance and gas included.

Yup, that's why it pays to put in as much money as you can into your mortgage payments as paydown on the principal. Just a couple of hundred more each payment drops the duration of the loan subtantially. Here's a calculator to show the effect for your particular circumstances...

    Linux Certifications?

I need to learn UNIX/Linux for a new position I'm starting in a couple of weeks (same company). The enterprise backup system (NetBackup) runs on Solaris. I don't want to divert the flow of this thread, but why particularly do you want to ban semi-autos? They are used in international shooting competitions. As for concealed carry, it isn't an available option in Illinois. However, almost all other States do allow concealed carry by appropriately...

    Mortgages

I'm a somewhat fan of escrow, if only because taxes are so out of control in NY that I could never save the money seperately. The town/school tax bills are sent to Wells Fargo, they pay the bill, and we get the paid receipt. Also, you do get to keep the interest earned on an escrow account.

What are the taxes like on housing there? It must be a reasonable amount on an annual basis, which will have to be added on to the monthly payment as escrow. Of course to me, paying 4.5 Million on a house with a single car garage and neighbours so close next door is unacceptable, I would rather...

    30% Off PowerEdge Servers

IME if you are buying a reasonable quantity of servers, it pays to get a Dell phone rep involved in the order. They have given me (the company) 30% off list in the past. If you keep going back to him, he will take care of you.

24TB in a single box is now possible.

With a SAN, you can generally get as big a box as you are willing to pay for, if you include expansion cabinets etc. With mid-level enterprise FC, the storage controllers seem to max out at around 20 enclosures, at which point you need more controllers.

    Expected USB 2 Transfer Rates?

IME the 360 is way too frigging loud to use as a media anything. Yes the 5160 is very highly priced by IBM (especially the second CPU). We'll probably start speccing out the quad cores once they've been out a little while longer. I agree, the 64 bit version is just snappy. From my limited understanding, whilst NIC teaming will give you a fatter pipe so to speak, it won't give you more performance for a single application (i.e. you want to copy a single large folder of images from one server to another, this will only use one gigabit connection, even if say four...

Yeah the patches didn't really work for the Calendering. Our advise was to print out your calender for the affected periods, manually change the times of any meetings you are having, and change the title of the meeting to include the time. Then double check each one after the clock moves forward.

Yeah, we have cogen at work.
