14KW! That's more than my entire house supply (100amps at 120V). My commiserations.

I dunno Tony, Australia is the second largest polluter of CO2 per capita after the USA, and exports 30% of the world's coal. So if the USA is public enemy number 1, then is Aus the 2nd?

Of course, I say that whilst my home county has declared a state of emergency due to blowing/drifting snow causing whiteout conditions. So I would be risking a ticket if I left work to go home. One of the guys on the current shift couldn't make it in, so I guess a double shift is on the cards.

In the end, whilst we might survive the current problem, it's only going to be worse for our kids. To me, this is indeed a case of "think of the children".

That is pretty steep for electric. We pay about 10 cents per kW-hr, including "delivery" charges etc. The rate for just the electric is $0.079 per kW-hr. This is the variable rate, it's possible to lock in at a higher fixed rate. Last year the variable ended up being about $40 cheaper on average...

Well I think what makes the USA look particularly bad is that we are responsible for the largest amount of CO2 emissions, per capita. Way more than the "developing" China and India etc. http://maps.grida.no/go/graphic/national_carbon_dioxide_co2_emissions_per_capita

I wouldn't go just on age of the house. Mine was buiult in 1917, and is well insulated. My gas forced air unit uses a piece of plastic PVC pipe for it's exaust. Around 96% efficient. My mistake, electric is efficient, just expensive in terms of cost. Unless you happen to live somewhere where it...

An inconvienent Truth and Global warming

The problem with the CO2 levels is that even if we stop generating excess amounts now, it will take decades for temps to stabilise. And the Earth itself does go through Ice Ages from time to time. Sea level rise is my biggest worry.

How do your parents heat? If they are heating with inefficient electric heaters, then I could see the bills being that high. If you live in a cold region, you can't beat the efficiency of gas (or wood). We heat with natural gas via a high efficiency forced air unit, and even for the worst...

I believe most of the MS patches are broken in some way, at least for automatic fixing of Exchange accoutns. Basically the new DST timing screws up calendering with Exchange. And anything else that keeps track of it's own time. Backups. Oracle. A farkload of stuff needs to be patched. It's...

Will Ford make it past this year?

There's a couple of things to keep in mind when comparing the US and Aus. There is no mandated super as such in the US, the closest is the "mandatory" Medicare/Social Security contribution (I believe the employer pays 7.5% and the employee pays the other 7.5%). Now in the USA you will often have...

Suprising that they didn't announce a 1Ds-MkII successor, it's almost like Apple in the days of the G4, 18 months and no progress in speed (resolution). Except in this case it's since 2004. I wonder if the high end has been taken by the BetterLights and other high resolution scanning backs.

What do you think of this roof?

What I found interesting when I've visited Germany is that none of the BMWs or Mercs had their model number displayed on the trunk. So it's difficult to tell if it's a 7 series or 5 series etc, except by visuals. No idea what engine is in each. Keep in mind that almost all taxis are Mercs, so...

    Hard Drive failures

Going with what's at work (obviously nothing like the quantity that Google has). We have a bunch of IBM storage arrays for PACS (X-rays and ultrasound). TotalStorage DS4500: 210 146GB 10K SCSI drives in 15 EXP700 chassis for online storage (used heavily). Might get one failure every 2-3...

    Something Random

The 07 Tundra comes standard with an auto locking rear diff. The Nissan Titan has an electronic switchable locking rear diff, but they've had so many problems with undersized/turdy brakes that I would never touch one. I think you have to go to the Sierra 2500 to get an auto locking rear diff...

Basically an AWD may not be a full-time system, i.e. it only drives the front or back wheels until it detects slippage, in which case it transfers power to all four wheels. Or it's full time 4 wheel drive, but low range gearing selection is available. A 4x4 on the other hand usually has a low...

Will Ford make it past this year?

The 500 has AWD as an option (I believe it's the same system Volvo uses). Option cost is about $1700 list price, probably closer to $1000 retail. The 500 is a much bigger car than the Taurus is. At least in 2008 it will have a 260HP 3.5L V6, instead of the dog 200HP engine it currently has...

Will Ford make it past this year?

One thing when comparing retirement costs is the age of the workforce. GM/Ford/Chrysler have tens/hundreds of thousands of retirees, who are paid benefits. IIRC the first Toyota workers are just now reaching retirement age. So the number of people they pay benefits to is dramatically less, and...

The H3 is basically a GMC Canyon frame with a different shell, it is rather small and cramped compared to a full size truck. The Ford Ranger is a bit of an old dog, how about a new 07 Tundra? Oops, never mind, just saw that an F-250 in Aus goes for over AUS$60,000! One can only imagine what a...

Controling three screens with one computer.

You could always try the Matrox TripleHead to Go box (p.s. I hate it, it's a piece of poo, horrible blurry VGA with a limit of 1280*1024 when used with 3 screens, we have one at work). But it works with many vid cards.

More than 2GB RAM under XP Pro 32-bit

32bit Windows has a 2GB limit per process, which can be increased to 3GB per process using the /3GB boot switch and some compiler optimisations (setting flags correctly). Most apps/processes don't use more than 2GB, so you should be all set.

    Where to Buy?

I've found Newegg single drive packaging to be unacceptable. If you buy a case of drives then they usually leave them in that factory packaging, and the drives survive. Got some SCSI drives from ZipZoomFly, great packaging.

    Normally DeAd?

I guess you would find the average life expectancy for someone born in 1959, and go from that. To be more accurate you would need to know the male/female population of the 100, as females seem to live longer on average. There's probably some distribution curve where you increase the chances of...

Apparently the fire started in the porch. We live out in the 'burbs so it's not exactly a hotbed of criminal activity. People still leave their cars unlocked etc. Maybe a kerosene heater or something like that tipped over. Didn't hear any smoke detectors going off.

    Display callibration 101

We used one of the Spyder's at my last job. Worked out a global setting of Gamma 2.2/6500K.
