    1KW Power Supply

Around $500. For a little more, I can get a Supermicro case with 15 hot swap bays, and triple redundant 760W PSU. Which does fine with dual Opterons, and 12 drives. I guess this is one for the "mines bigger than yours" people."

    Motherboard selection dificulties. PCIEx16 and a PCIEx8?

Hey Max, I wouldn't worry about 16x lanes for a simple SCSI card, even the fastest PCI-E RAID controllers max out at 8x, and work happily in a 4x (electrical) slot.

Labeling CD's/DVD's with a printer, rather then a sharpie...

Several inkjets can print directly onto a printable CD/DVD. However, if you aren't doing many, you may want to look at just printing labels with a printer (lasers included), then applying them with a centering device. The kits are cheap, and then you can use the media of your choice.

    Motherboard selection dificulties. PCIEx16 and a PCIEx8?

There will be some chipsets that can do a full 2 * 16x slots, coming out next year. In addition to a couple of x1s and maybe an x4 (I think they have a max of 40 lanes total).

LSI MegaRAID SATA 300-8X Controller Review

Tough to buy one, when the Arecas run at 500MHz, for a few bucks more. And none of that "no BBU, no write back cache enabling" nonsense.

    Motherboard selection dificulties. PCIEx16 and a PCIEx8?

You can switch an SLI board to SLI (giving you two 8x slots), and just use one for video. The other can be used for SCSI etc. Keep in mind that most PCI-E SCSI cards are RAID controllers, I haven't seen any normal HBA in PCI-E form yet.

Hi Tim, Is that electricity pricing including supply charges etc? A high efficiency gas furnace can get you close to 95% efficiency. It wouldn't surprise me if electric was cheaper this year, after the insane increase in natural gas.

It's only a matter of time. The Dell 24" undercuts the Apple 24" quite substantially, they are probably eyeing the profits to be made on the 30" size. The only bad news is 30" won't fit under my hutch, the 24" has 1/2" clearance.

    Satellite TV Providers

Both Dish and DirecTV are in the process of switching to MPEG 4 compression. This will render any MPEG 2 HD DVRs such as the DirecTV box and the Dish 942 useless. That's why you see the DirecTV box at such low prices currently. The good news for you is that if you aren't going to be using an...

    Help w/ high-end PSU

There's a UL/CB safety reg that you cannot draw more than 240VA from any single rail of a user-accessible power supply. So to get more than 20A, you need multiple 12V rails.

    Folding@Home

It's not the 15MB of memory I'm worried about. It seems to me that FAH is a memory intensive program (i.e. lots of memroy bandwidth is used). That doesn't play well with our image processing software (which is also memory bandwidth intensive). I've seen the slowdown of batch jobs myself.

    New camera: Canon 20D?

Does the 20D have a noise reduction mode? If so, try a shot with that on, it may subtract the hot pixels. Sometimes there will be specks of crap on an image, that you can't see with your Mk1 eyeball on the sensor. I would give the sensor a clean in any case, they don't always come out very...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

At least in my experience the shutters seem to last around double what Canon spec, at least with the 1D/1Ds MKIIs. If you do happen to wear it out, and if the warranty has expired, a shutter replacement is around $300-$400 (hopefully a lot less for the 20D).

Dell canada's computer prices have skyrocketed.

Dell were definitely desperate last quarter. Normally we spec P4 3.6 workstations, we placed an order last week and they upgraded us to P4 3.8GHz, several hundred dollars off per system, and gave us free overnight shipping.
