PC Gaming = World of Suck

Chili's at ORD would be one that I've experienced. Just madness, people who have one foot in the grave being asked for ID. I guess there's always the possibility that they have that rare disease where you age really fast. I tend to put my drivers license on the counter when I'm paying...

    Best drive imaging software?

I have to setup computers before they ship to clients. Often-times, the POS Maxtor Calypsos inside will shit the bed within a few months, and the client has to setup the PC again, using the provided Dell OS CD, and various CDs that we provide. Big headache in terms of support. Ideally, I would...

AMD ahead of Intel...in the manufacturing process?

Intel use a lot of transistors to get their 2MB L2 cache (and soon, 2MB L2 cache * 2 for the dual core chips). Personally, I prefer CPUs that don't use L2 to make up for turdy performance :)

10 GB Ethernet, or adapter teaming?

Still about 30MB/sec. But I attribute that to the speed of the single drive in the client machines. The problem I will be encountering is when I have 6-8 connections to the server, all wanting data. In which case a single 125MB/sec (theoretical) gigabit connection will be insufficient. No...

10 GB Ethernet, or adapter teaming?

Gbit over copper. Sounds like aggregation is the way to go, there's plenty of PCI Express slots free, so bandwidth in the server is not a problem.

AMD ahead of Intel...in the manufacturing process?

Not to worry Coug, even with Intel moving to 65nm, their power consumption is still piss-poor, no comparison to AMD at 90nm: http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2578&p=4

    Folding@Home

Had to remove it from quite a few machines. But I have now returned, with I think five P4 3.6GHzs, running the big mama unit. BTW there is now a beta 5.04 client, that allows you to specify -advmethods all the time under advanced options. Also an option to allow you to define how much available...

10 GB Ethernet, or adapter teaming?

So our new server at work is humming along, takes all we can throw at it. However, as we add more connections to it, I can see that we are going to max out the gigabit ethernet connection (there's 2 on board, one goes to the lab for all the work, the other to the rest of the offices). I see...

    New camera: Canon 20D?

IS can help when you are shooting with a long lens - i.e. Merc zooming in on the bOObies! It depends how wide you want to go. If you regularly shoot wide, then a full frame sensored camera would be more appropriate, as you don't have the FOV crop. If you can find a use for it, the Canon 100mm...

We have one of these at work (15 hot swap SATA bays): http://supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/933/SC933T-R760.cfm Only downsides are cost ~$800 And insane noise. Sure keeps the drives cool though.

    Car Buying Advice Needed

Translation: He wants a new, roomier, safer vehicle, yet doesn't want high payments for 5 years. I don't see leasing as a negative if you drive less than the alloted 10-12,000 miles per year. Especially if you only lease for 2-3 years. At the end, you own nothing, but you also owe nothing.

Veritas (Stomp) RecordNow DX came with my old Sony 500A DVD burner. Works great on any modern DVD burner as well (haven't tried dual layer yet). Just does the simple stuff. Audio/data CD or DVD. Scrap last post, uploading to one of the Promiseless actually gets me 9.5MB/sec. 9.5MB/sec with Promise 25MB/sec with Areca I'm not worried about management at all. Godamn Windows SCSI bug is probably not helping either.

No, server is back in RAID 5. The 25MB/sec I'm getting is when I upload from a client, to the new server. Scary thing, I just uploaded the same files to a server using the Promiseless controller, got around 45MB/sec! The network is by no means fixed, there must be an issue with how the new...

Matrox P650 vs. ATI XL 800

Looks nice, but at the price I would be getting two 2405s. Also, I already have a Gretag color puck doodad, which works fine for calibrating multiple machines to a single standard. That LED based monitor looks quite interesting tho.

New Computer Money just came in

So I did some performance benchmarking of the file server today. 10MB/sec over the network. Not good. I changed the array over to RAID 10 (from 5). Still 10MB/sec. Bugger says me (thinking of the $$$ I will need to reimburse the company). And then I notice the network cabling from the jacks...

Sweet Jebus, the Maxtor Calypso is a turd

Out of around 15 Dell Precision workstations (470 and 370), 4 of them have had a failed 250GB SATA version of the above. Within a year of purchase. Of course they are worked pretty hard, but it's difficult to go SCSI when you need large capacity. Surely Dell must be losing money next daying us...

Matrox P650 vs. ATI XL 800

Mmmm, 1:1 can't be beat. At work we don't have any CRTs on the desks (exceptions being some really nasty ones in the server room). Dell 1704FPs mostly, at 1280*1024@17". Couple of 20" UXGAs, and of course the 2405 in my office :) Even tho the vast majority of our work is digital imaging, the...

    Color calibrating the display

I think you may have blinded yourself by running with contrast at 100% for so long. I would find 9300K to be insanely blue. 6500K would indeed look very reddish if you were used to 9300K. Is it possible to adjust the RGB values on your monitor?

    Color calibrating the display

We use a Pantone Colorvision Spyder2Pro at work. Easy to use, gives excellent, repeatable results. Cost about $250 from Amazon. Gives you a custom ICC profile for each monitor. We calibrate to gamma 2.2, 6500K.
