    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Looking more closely at VSA, I can see I'm going to have a couple issues. 1. Due to the internal mirroring feature, I'll need twice (thrice for three hosts?) the drive capacity. I'm not sure whether the "backup" drives can be normal HDDs without impacting performance, whether it expects all the...

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Right in one. I verified the vmdk files and they are not the correct size. Rather than re-download, I built a Server2008 machine that now holds vCenter, Veeam backup, and the vSphere web client.

Samsung SUR40, now available for pre-order

I need a 50" version to display full-size 24"x36" plans. If we can display them truly 1:1, we can use the screen as a very expensive tracing board and do take-offs. I know this is the "wrong way" to solve this problem, but it is the method that most closely represents the current process in the...

vCenter is really slick. I've even had a license for it, just haven't used it before.

    Video Re-encoding Software

Intereresting. The only movie MakeMKV has let me down on was "Days of Thunder" (no big loss); all it could do was rip the french audio.

    Video Re-encoding Software

Have you tried MakeMKV on these troublesome disks? That is my one-stop solution at the moment.

Not on the list for vCenter Server.

I'm the only person with a login, so I won't be bothering with the domain. The system was stable with 2x8GB, but not 4x8GB.

Win7 x64 is not supported for vCenter...worth a try. I guess I could build a Server 2008 machine just to hold vCenter and my Veeam backup program...

I'll try that at home, the connection at work is just too slow. Thanks for having a look.

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

I haven't set up the VSA yet; I just installed ESXi 5.0 on a machine, connected using the vSphere client downloaded from that machine, and imported the .ovf. It automatically pulled the .vmdk files from the same location and didn't ask me any other questions.

Has anyone here successfully installed the vCenter VM? It imports from the .ovf correctly, boots, and then fails with some filesystem errors.

I deal with windchill by staying indoors. I thought Merc would do the same. The walk to/from the car can be managed in just about anything.

I don't use the PCIe SSD cards in ESXi boxes; getting the drivers sorted was a PITA. Perhaps the new version 5 has them built-in, but SATA is fine for this purpose.

    Android phones: Tips, tricks?

I need two Android apps, and I would love any recommendations. 1. RDP client for connecting to Windows 7 desktops using the built-in Remote Desktop, no 3rd party software on the desktop. 2. Program that allows printing to networked printers from a web browser. No idea if this is even possible...

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Downloading the trial of the Essentials Plus Kit including the vSphere Storage Appliance. Hopefully I'll be able to build some test machines tomorrow and get some testing done. It will also be a good time to see if an i7-2600 with 32GB of RAM (4x8GB) is enough to do the deed; that is much...
  23. ddrueding

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Quite. The Oracle 10g and MS SQL databases and their associated application servers would be the most important, and they all require 2-4 vCPUs.

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

I don't think storage vMotion would be a big deal if I was using the Storage Appliance; if the VMs are redundant on the other machines anyway, just shut down the clients, pull the machine, and power them up elsewhere.

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

Thanks Handruin for the warnings regarding FT....it looks like High Availability will be the best that my most critical VMs would be eligible for, and I don't want to splash out on HCL'd hardware. That means that if I was willing to give up storage vMotion I could get away with the Essentials...

    Small but Full-fat VMWare install.

That is my biggest concern, really. At the moment I have fantastic performance with direct-attached SSDs on each ESXi server. I know I won't get that level of performance with even the same disks attached across a network, but I don't know how big a hit it will be. I also don't know the...

My wife uses the same type of blades I do (Mach 3) without complaint. In fact, she commented that they were better than the more expensive female version.

It looks like I may have won funding to go all the way to "Fault Tolerance" in my VMWare configuration at work. Due to recent streamlining in our servers and applications, all the current servers can run on a single hex-core i7 with some SSDs if necessary. I think this means I should be able to...

    Supermicro deal on Ebay

I'm thinking of playing with FreeNAS as well, but have much less Linux experience than you do. Is it straightforward enough? I'd love to use it as the storage foundation for a VMWare HA cluster, and it looks like people have made it work for this purpose; Handruin?

Great find. Those are all the experiences I had (or wanted to have) when I lived in NYC (briefly). Of course, those moments were massively overpowered by less positive moments, but if you want to but together a "greatest hits", that would be it.

    High quality inverters?

I'm having tons of problems with inverters, they are dying, killing equipment, killing batteries. Driving me nuts. I only need about 300W, but want the best quality available. What would be your recommendations? Thanks!

Yup. The boss liked it and I was told to "continue building inventory". So I'll be buying more lights in January. More progress, had to stop with only ~9,000 lights; it was maxing out the 4.8kW generator. I don't think it liked going from nothing to max and back several times a minute. Got some video on the 7D, now I need to figure out how to make it Youtube-able.

    Bicycle LED headlight

Thanks for the well wishes, it really wasn't a big deal. They just had to remove some stuff from my back and run some tests. I have no practical experience in 3D design, but that usually doesn't stop me. ;) If you have the dimensions for the relevant bits, I'll start putting something together.

Didn't mean to rush you, just checking in. I just got my stitches out on Wednesday, so I haven't been riding (they were right down my spine). If the enclosure is going to be a lot of work, you can skip that portion and I'll make it part of my eMachineShop project.

    Half Price REVO drive

I've never had any go bad, but others have so the potential is certainly there. I've only bought maybe a dozen, so the stats can't be settled just by me. It has its own RAID card built in, and that driver isn't built into Windows 7 or Server 2008, so you get to download the driver and add it...
