    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

How about something that involves random reads and writes.

    Something Random

My first recommendation would be not to drive. Take the South Shore downtown and get on the Red Line at State and Lake. Get off at Addison. If you insist on driving, there are very few places to park for free, you will end up paying $20 minimum. There are many pay lots in the area, it shouldn't...

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

I ordered the Patriot Xporter XT Boost 16GB. If I actually send in the MIR, it will be pretty cheap.

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

Let me rephrase: What USB flash drive would you buy that combines decent speed and a decent price?

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

Fast reads are more important than fast writes, but both are nice. I'm planning on using it for booting a Linux live cd. I would guess random reads are of utmost importance here. I will also use it for transferring large files between computers, speed is less important here, I just don't want...

    Fast 16GB USB Flash Drive

I'm looking for a cheap and fast 16GB USB flash drive. Does anyone have experience with these? I would rather not mess around with MIRs if possible.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The 80GB G2 appears to be available right now, the price went up another $20 to $299.99. I attached an image because this will probably change in the next 15 minutes.

    Netbook for the wife

I got the Acer netbook today. It seems pretty solid. It's not really mine, it's the girlfriend's, but she's not here so I get to mess with it. Speed is pretty decent. Windows Vista is pretty annoying, but I was able to order a free Windows 7 upgrade from Acer. The screen resolution is good as...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Well, I won't be buying one anymore. That's a $50 price increase in one day. I guess I'll just wait for the supply and price to stabilize.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm starting to get pissed off. I got another alert email from Newegg saying that the new 80GB Intel SSD is available again. I click to purchase and again it's sold out. The price has gone up again to $249.99. Now it should be available 9/2. Are they getting these in batches of 5?

SSDs - State of the Product?

I just got an email from Newegg saying that the new Intel 80GB SSD is in stock. I go to the page and try to order it and it says that it's now out of stock. I go back to the item listing page and it's now out of stock until tomorrow and the price went up $10. Son of a bitch.

Had some real fun tonight when I rebooted my system and found that it would no longer load X. Turns out I had installed a kernel update awhile back and hadn't rebooted since then. This new kernel wasn't compatible with the version of the kmod-nvidia driver I had installed. This should be...

    Linux Server

CentOS is the same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and costs nothing. We use it here for our linux servers. I don't trust Oracle. They are also a pain in the ass to work with and their support is useless.

How to tell 7K1000's from 7K1000.B's

Write cache stores data that will eventually be written to persistent storage in volatile memory which will lose the data if power is lost.

    Netbook for the wife

I was joking. I'm hoping the one I ordered will be decent. If it breaks, it's not a huge loss as it's only a $400 machine. If there were another manufacturer that made a netbook with similar specs I would definitely consider it, but at this time Acer is the only option.

Yeah, I did some searching and found everyone basically saying the same thing. Firefox on Linux is just not as well supported as on Windows. I just installed Opera and it is vastly faster. My new quad core Phenom II 3GHz cost me 92$

That's probably true, but what happens is that when yields get good, they no longer have a crappy part bin and just use the same chip everywhere with something turned off. Think of the Celeron 300a, I don't think I ever heard of someone not being able to achieve a 450Mhz overclock with that chip.

If I have video that is encoded in 1080p that I want to play on a screen that's smaller than that I'll still need additional processing power. Correct me if I'm wrong. I would rather not have to re-encode 1080p video to 720p to be able to play it on the netbook.
