    Faster Merdia - When, Where?

The Memorex 4x rated stuff works at 8x for me in the NEC 3500. At least the spindles of the white printable ones.

    Faster Merdia - When, Where?

Apparently most of the 8x rated stuff burns at 12x. I'll have to get some to see for myself. With the NEC 3500 @ around $80 I don't see the price premium as extravagant.

A push or self propelled is what I'm after Buck. We're only talking about 1/4th of an acre. Thanks for the info on the blowers, my only requirement apart from it being two-stage is that it has remote shute control, I hate having to wind a freaking lever to change throw direction :) Ideally the...

TiVo + Netfilx = Streaming Movies

It'll be interesting to see what kind of pricing/viewage plan they introduce. Could you for example have 3 dl'd movies availble at any one time on the basic plan? I'm guessing it would dl a new movie overnight (how long does it take to dl 7-8GB on broadband?)

    Where's the fire?

I went from Geneva to Paris, return. From Geneva it goes pretty slowly, until it hits the TGV lines, I guess in France. Couldn't feel the acceleration from normal speeds to TGV speeds at all, I only realised we were moving fast when I looked out of the window. I guess even in France they have to...

    Where's the fire?

Having been on the TGV I can say that you really don't feel the speed. Sure the caternaries (sp?) zip by fast but it's all so quiet and smooth. Given that a motorbike is exposed to the wind, and very close to the ground, I can only imagine that it feels very fast indeed. Sort of like a go-kart.

Lunar, you better just declare bankruptcy now :) The mighty 1Ds-MkII has been unveiled, 16.7Mp of full frame glory. http://www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos1dsmkii/ Now if the transfer speeds over FW are as good as the 1D-MkII then I'm sure we'll be buying a bunch.

    Where's the fire?

I guess he could argue that he was going so fast that it was impossible for the pilot's reflexes to accurately time when he passed the second line. But the judge prob wouldn't be too impressed :)

    I need a new TV

I can sometimes get Buffalo HD which is over 50 miles away. It all depends on what kind of hills/mountains are in the way I guess, and your antenna. Rosewood side panels? Sounds like an Elite model. Have you got many LDs?

What about the Dell Insipron 700m? Around 4.1 pounds, with cd/dvd burner integrated, and 12" WXGA screen. Can be specced with the 755 (2GHz Dothan I believe). Integrated video, but you aren't going to get fast discrete in a 4 pound machine...

Windows Media Player: which version is best?

If you by chance rip CDs, then MP9/10 support variable bitrate WMP, and lossless WMP. As for DRM, things such as "obtain unique ID" and "automatically obtain licenses for downloaded music" can be easily turned off in options. Personally I find the newer versions make it harder to actually...

Suggestions for Carbus FireWire (or FW/USB combo)

I used a CardBus FW card for a while with my old Athlon4 1GHz lappie. I can't remember the name, it may have been an OrangeMicro one. Only a few of them have an external power input/wall wart. I don't know of any that can provide a 6 pin powered port without the external supply.

We had this same madness in Australia for many years. When you wanted to a buy a gun you had to get a "Permit to Acquire", which would be sent to you 30 days after your application was paid for. You could then take your permit to a gun dealer to pick up a gun of the type listed on the permit...

OK, you need a drivers license if you are going to be driving on a public road. It's public infrastructure. If all you want to do is drive on private property, you don't need a driver's license. Therefore, when hunting/target shooting etc on private property, the same should apply. No license...

No matter what format the DRM will be on-disc, i.e. no phoning home to a server like the HD version of T2 (WM9) required. It will be robust. 36 million Americans now living in poverty
