    Best Acrobat Reader

On an Acrobat related note, at work I sometimes have to deal with hundreds of PDFs. Is there a tool of somesort that allows me to point it into a directory full of pdfs, and it would give me back the number of pages in each pdf, and/or the total number of pages? It's a pain having to open each...

Uninsured drivers (are a pain in the wallet.....) :(

In Australia your annual registration fee includes a mandatory third-party personal cover. So if you do happen to injure someone in a crash, you don't have to pay anything (at least for medical, third-party property is still your responsibility). Of course that doesn't help if someone is driving...

    Best Acrobat Reader

Acrobat 6 is my preference, there was a link on the Inq or something where you could remove a bunch of plug-ins and crap to speed up the load time.

    RAID 0 again

1GB of RAM is plenty for IE, email etc. In fact 512MB would be enough in that instance. I guess nowadays with much higher system RAM limits then before, it doesn't make sense to hook up slower types of RAM and hitch it onto the PCI bus. Better to spend that money on more system RAM, where the...

    United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement

Honestly I would have to say that the Australian Liberal party is more analogous to the US Democrats with Socialist tendencies. With the Aussie Labor Party more towards the US Republicans. But they are both to the left of center compared to the US middle line. Re: Australia being a part of...

[NEWS] - Sony Blue Laser Drive

Well I guess they will all be watching Paramount movies on Blu-ray :) In any case the PS3 will have a read-only drive, personally I want something that can record HD to disc.

Memorex Announces 16X / Dual Layer DVD Drives

Looks like 4x DVD+R DL drives have arrived, giving a reasonable 27 mins for a dual layer burn. Of course 8x would be better, but a nice improvement from the current 2.4x. And it appears they use the current 2.4x DL discs and write them at 4x. http://www.cdrinfo.com/Forum/tm.asp?m=73028

[NEWS] - Sony Blue Laser Drive

According to cdrinfo, the PS3 will also use a 23GB blue-ray drive, should be ready for 2005. And it's going to be a lot less than $3K.

    United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement

It could be a good election issue, I imagine most people care more about not paying 10 to 20 times more for meds (comparing prices in Aus to USA) rather than some FTA with dubious benefits. With little Johnnie, he'll fold when the cost of lost votes outweighs the financial goodies he's getting...

    United States-Australia Free Trade Agreement

It still leaves lots of US protections in place for agriculture, so the sugar farmers etc get farked over. Much better for the US side than the Aussie side.

OK, nevermind, it's 1-888-518-2076 and of course they turn off the technical support option over the weekend. Farked is a close relation of knackered, buggered, and bloody load of plastic bollocks.

    Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS?

There isn't much diff between most DD and DTS soundtracks. It depends on how much effort was put into each. Tho IMHO the DTS-ES tracks from the extended editions of LOTR are superior to their DD counterparts. However back in the day of Laserdisc, the DTS discs were full bitrate DTS (around...

    Promise SX6000 Raid Issues

We have a few SX6000's at work. Running 6 * 250GB Maxtors in RAID 5. We had major problems trying to run two of the cards on one mobo, with one array on each card, accessing one array singly was fine. However as soon as you tried to access both, the server went tits-up. But no problems with the...

    I need a new TV

The HDTivos have two ATSC (OTA) tuners and two sat tuners. You can record two shows at once, in any combination, whilst watching a third already recorded show. Or watch one show live whilst recording another. For the dual tuner models I believe they run two lines of co-ax from the dish to the...

    Photography Advice

Well I used mine last week to take pics of the new house. But apart from that nothing exciting. At work we've switched completely to the 1D MkII, so much faster than the 1Ds it's not funny. We experimented with the possibility of using the D70 as a lower cost option, but with it's lack of a...

    I need a new TV

One thing I have noticed is that whilst my 47" appeared to be way too big at delivery, over the weeks it has shrunk down in perceptible size. I would say that even the massive 65"ers would be Ok after a while. However SD is going to look like diarrhea on something that large. DLP sets are nice...

    SCSI questions

You only need a driver if the enclosure supports hot-swap (SAF-TE or whatever it is). Otherwise the circuit board just provides power and termination. If you were daisy chaining, you would enable termination on the last enclosure on the chain.

The "line-interactive" AFAIK means it can buck and boost the output voltage without resorting to the battery too much. The off-line's just switch right to the battery. 16:9 vs. 4:3 Format for New HDTV

Australia does have HD tv but looking at this site: http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=15 The government is accepting 576P as a HD signal. And most of the 1080i broadcasts are merely upsampled versions of the SD feed. Oh well, perhaps the people will be satisfied with 16:9 in low rez...

The cheapest off-peak Travelcard costs 4.30 pounds. Which is close to 10 bucks or beyond. That's just for Zone 1 and 2, and after 9.30am. Which means it's pretty much useless to get to work. But you do get to ride buses/trains within the zones as well. You can get it cheaper by getting...

You mention having people living closer to work. In a city of 8 million like NYC this then causes havoc with housing prices as you have noted. Perhaps one day we can all work from home, in our 1000 apartment condos. Long live the concrete jungle. Me, I like the greenery and air of the...

Housing price growth is finally slowing down

I should have been clearer. A car is a fixed rate in NY, around $70-80 something for two years IIRC.
