They ran my cables to a shallow utility closet. The closet is exactly as deep as a as a 24 port patch panel is wide. Wanna know how I know that? Because the panel is installed on the side wall of the closet. That must be covered in one of those "special" EIA specs for structured cabling.

One of my co-workers had a stamping-her-feet-on-the-floor-jumping-up-and-down-red-in-the-face temper tantrum yesterday because I said I didn't have time to move our servers and infrastructure hardware over to our new office today. I don't have room for a rack. My installation is going to be ugly...

NVIDIA Launches Fermi Based GeForce GT 610, GT 620, GT 630 Into Retail

On the day when I decide who lives and who dies, the rivers will be awash in the blood of the unrighteous and the earth thereupon shall be sown with salt, that nothing might arise from the the fetid carcass of depravity. Note to zealous followers: Purchase salt. Also, plows.

While I am not fully certain that this represents any real contrition on Chewy's part, I am willing to provisionally withdraw my call for punitive moderation. Of course, I cannot be held responsible if any of my more zealous followers undertake violent actions against Chewy, his family or...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I've had to RMA one graphics card with an AMD GPU in the last 12 years (not counting the misbegotten Jetway card I got with none of the surface mount ICs soldered on). I can't even count the number of nvidia cards I've tossed.

The Avengers XXX is not as good as the regular version in most respects but then on the other hand at least the Black Widow does the thing you really want her to do in the porn version.

Yes, because the only thing I like better than using a graphics card is waiting two or three weeks for some fuckstick to process my RMA and send me a new one.

I've been told it's basically down to "check a box" in CCC these days. I figure it's not worth it if there's any more work than powering the card and maybe a one-time config. Last time I screwed around with SLI, I was having to configure individual game profiles where sometimes both cards...

Has anyone messed around with Crossfire setups recently? I'm trying to decide if it's worth tracking down another Radeon 5870 vs. getting a newer card. I don't know if I need my game system to draw an extra 200W just to play City of Heroes, but I can buy a lot of electricity for the $250 price...

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

The thing is, it's ridiculously easy to make a decent file server. I understand that WHS doesn't really cost more than Win7 Pro, but the only compelling argument for it is the automated backup. It's a little like a solution in search of a problem to solve.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

There are no other games like City of Heroes. Champions Online uses an open power selection process that effectively results in absolutely everyone making the same character (why make anything else when you can make a tank-mage?) and DCUO is first of all flawed for using DC intellectual property...

I had the opportunity to test WHS 2011. A few things to say: 1. It seems to disable HDMI audio on every reboot. Which is hilarious for something that could potentially be used for a media center. Whoops. 1a. It's happening on both Intel and ATI hardware, so I don't think it's a "ha-ha bad ATI...

I don't like Steam. I don't like rights management software the restricts my ability to operate my computer or to play games I have purchased. I picked up some products from "The Art of Shaving" a couple weeks ago. I'm trying out different shaving creams and soaps right now, just to see if I can find something that works better. Supposedly, the one $22 jar of shaving cream I bought will last 8 to 10 months, versus going though a $7...

I honestly think WM7 was completely the wrong direction. I was legitimately happy with my WM6.5 device for the span of its life. I was able to use it to do work. They do eventually lose their stickiness, but yes, you can mount things vertically, including smartphones and hard drives. I guess they have to be washed every so often to maintain their stickiness. After I slapped one on the dirty exterior of my car, I found that it didn't hold as well.

Not so much firing up as "stopped dead in their tracks." Windows on ARM doesn't seem that interesting to me.
